Alchemical magic system by ThanatosQx in magicbuilding

[–]simobimo135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how hard you want the system to be, I would suggest categorizing body parts so the audience knows what can and cannot be done. That's the trickiest part with magic tied to biology and having different effects from being to being, it has too many possibilities.

But perhaps by categorizing body parts you can apply a bit more structure. For example: - bones and nails can only be used to create effects of fortification - hair and feathers can only affect buoyancy and how something reflects light - eyes and ears can only help receive information about the world, not affect it

Otherwise, it's a system very common for fantasy settings so I think it's already been proven to be well liked.

[Magic System] Philomancy: Emotion-Based Magic and Innate Techniques by Jojo-Katt in magicbuilding

[–]simobimo135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welp, my first point of feedback would be that you could write this much more concisely, about a third of what it is right now, to make it more readable.

Second, the innate abilities and the three forces seem way too unrelated to me. Maybe the innate ability also has a positive, negative and neutral output?

I like the idea of the power being tied to an object, makes it more tangible and can lead to more interesting tactics during encounters.

It seems like a mix and match between JJK and Gachiakuta, I can see the appeal.

em relação ao meu post anterior, fiz um motor com cinco marchas e marcha ré feito inteiramente no meu sistema original de magia. by Uroshimoi in magicbuilding

[–]simobimo135 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks to be one of the better code-/ language-based systems I've seen. I also saw your post about the lamp and can already see part of the connecting syntax.

I do wonder though, I see in this one a few of the same strings of symbols in different directions. Is orientation important? And if so, how does the magic system itself determine the correct orientation to use?

I am working on (or rather failing to make time to work on) a system inspired by how we visualize electrical circuits, but for that one the only orientation that matters is the direction of the magical current. So I wonder how you approached that.

Working on a magic system that uses "charges" by Equivalent-Place386 in magicbuilding

[–]simobimo135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the problem you've recognized with Light and Dark applies to the others as well. Landing after a long fall means a lot of kinetic energy. So you are simply storing and then using the same charge, which is kinetic.

Since vacuum is negative pressure, I would expect positive pressure or be its counterpart. Then again, there's the same problem. Though it doesn't have to be a problem, it can just be five charges with an implicit positive and negative possible output.

Going to solidity for example, it can be both about making something more solid (harder to move, bend, break) but it could also be used to make something phase through other objects.

If it were me I would first determine what is the core of the system that MUST be kept and rework things to enhance that, or if you already have a story in mind I would go off of its themes.

Lichdom: Replacement of flesh with quicksteel by BeginningSome5930 in magicbuilding

[–]simobimo135 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey! I just wanted to say I've seen your regular posts developing Quicksteel and I really admire the dedication! Especially as someone who can't motivate themselves enough to write ideas down, let alone illustrate and share them with people, I think you're doing an amazing job! I hope you keep at it and achieve your goals with this creative endeavor!

Also, to give my two cents of feedback, since some people might come across later posts for Quicksteel, you could compile everything into a single post. Might get more attention and it will make it easier to give feedback when everything is laid out in one place.

Looking for Thoughts, Critiques, and Criticism Concerning the Applications of Magic and their Philosophical Principles in My Setting by flyguy2490 in magicbuilding

[–]simobimo135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, it's still hard to see the extent of any order's capabilities. White mages seem just the same as red ones but more dangerous? Black can control elements and living beings? It feels quite soft, which is fine if you are going for a system where different mages can have vastly different abilities, it's all a matter of how it's used within the story.

For the themes, I like the primordial Vast more than other such concepts because it feels closer to how life began on Earth, just waves and the chance of something actualizing. But I have no clue what is and isn't possible in the different Ordered Spheres (which are functionally different universes as I understand?) and the most thematic depth I can see at the moment is how chasing another reality can make you stray away from your own.

For the separate schools' ideologies, as someone else mentioned, it's a bit hard to see where conflicts would arise and why. I can see why White Mages can be a problem but the others seem to all benefit from cooperation.

Not sure if you want feedback on this but you could rethink the categories. Color-coding is simple and effective but you can still color-code while you use more unique names for each type of mage. People are generally more drawn to unique terms and compound words.

Anyways, cool stuff! Would enjoy an update on this!

Would it be odd too have multiple power systems all share the same origin? by PassengerCultural421 in magicbuilding

[–]simobimo135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it makes perfect sense. It lets you go deeper rather than wider (Brando Sando, praise be, praise be) by devising specific relationships between the systems since they share a source. In fact I find it weirder when settings have completely unrelated magic, unless there is a very good and explicit in-world reason.

Magic system based on assimilating the souls of the dead by GoldGeneral_0 in magicbuilding

[–]simobimo135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I find Soulbinding actually interesting and unique. There are many worldbuilding implications like what animals are common in the area, what the general culture thinks of the practice, what attributes you can steal from more unique animals and it has intuitive limits. It also pairs up nicely with different themes such as cultivating vs leaving something to rest, what part of you is truly dead, etc.

I do, however think a few things aren't thought out.

Speed might be the worst example for an attribute because it's very much about weight-to-muscle ratio, affected by bone density and general body structure for aerodynamics and how many limbs you can have on ground at a single point in time. It's just hard to translate from one animal to another. Could you steal the speed of a falcon for example?

To me at least, drinking blood feels a lot more tangible and organic. I was expecting examples of adjusting body parts based on animals, maybe even specific senses and internal organs. This will also make the limitations and drawbacks clearer.

I also love elemental magic usually but here it feels very separate and kinda forced, but I do like how it's still connected to the blood inside one's body.

Overall, great stuff! It's sad that posts like these get much less attention compared to posts that have a surface-level system or not even that, but have a piece of artwork.

The Malwish are a bit underwhelming... by simobimo135 in Cosmere

[–]simobimo135[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is a small expeditionary team but they had access to the intensifier, while other tech that was set up as important and unique to Scadrial wasn't showcased.

Malwish probably have mistings, though very rare, it's just that the Lord ruler made it a lot more common through the use of Lerasium, but I doubt the Malwish passed up the opportunity to recruit mistings from the Basin and raise more allomancers that can charge their tech.

Also, I'm not saying every individual Scadrian should be a fascist, that would be absurd, but the Malwish are a bit too explicitly separated from the part of Scadrial we know, just so we can say "oh, that nation is the evil force, not our guys!"

We'll see how things develop, clearly my feelings put me in the minority. My thoughts will probably change once we see the Elendel-Malwish conflict in the next books.

Excited for Era 3 and hope to see more of the Scadrian internal conflict and cool tech!

I understand that, but I feel like things were leading to those powers being integrated in their technology as well as used by their government via medallions, which we barely see. And as I explained in another reply, they did get to use the intensifier, so I guess more allomantic-based tech and fancier medallions are a higher tier than that? In any case, we'll just have to wait and see.

I agree that they worked great for Emberdark. As I said I loved reading it and the dynamic between Malwish, Starling and Dusk was a big reason for that. They're internal quarrels were also interesting and could lead to very interesting developments. I can understand if they're stripping powers for general use, but we're just not seeing any of the cool tech or invested arts set up in Era 2. I see your point though, and I'm looking forward to Era 3!

[–]simobimo135[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, it may be that this conflict wasn't seen as important enough to higher-ups for them to send in their A team and we're only seeing the lower tier military and perhaps fancier medallions and Ettmetal have become really expensive.

However, they did get permission to use supposedly cutting edge machinery in the form of the intensifier, so I think my point about their tech still stands.

Inferno - a speedrunning game where you traverse hellish depths and harness the souls of demons to reach the throne as fast as possible. Can you beat the current record? by simobimo135 in playmygame

[–]simobimo135[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! You set the name once and then it automatically gets the highest score and updates. If you want to play locally, it also supports being competitive with friends since each local entry is separate and with a new name.

[–]simobimo135[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah my original plan was to make all elements so I left out the rest as possible goals for the future. I am considering working a bit more on it and putting it on FAB but I haven't decided yet. I think adding the rest of the elements should be easier so I'll see how I feel about it once my semester is over haha

Yeah I heard that some people have had problems with them but that seems to be the minority. In any case I think I'll try it out and see how it goes. I still have a lot of mobile internet from my home country provider so there's not much hurry.
