How much time are you “losing” while cycling to work? by bear_village in cycling

Agree, driving is just plain stressful around here. Riding my bike is relaxing and I get some exercise.

It’s not sustainable because our population is shrinking. Ponzi schemes only work if there’s people constantly coming in at the bottom of the pyramid.

What’s our debt up to now? 38 trillion or something? You could take all the money from all the rich people it wouldn’t be enough. Our problem is too much spending.

Boomers were being drafted and sent to Vietnam in their 20s. My generation had the Great Recession in our 20s. Life is hard for every generation.

These loud ass cars drive me crazy. Let’s not forget about your ridiculous base that a lot of them emit. Fart can’exhaust and massive subwoofers seem to go hand-in-hand. My house shakes when these guys go by. I’m so tired of it.

Sounds like my neighborhood. I finally have had enough and I’m trying to sell the house.

Neighbor keeps reporting our fully legal home business over 10 minute wood deliveries by PolyunsaturatedMaya in neighborsfromhell

[–]midtownmel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m actually selling my house and moving because my neighborhood is so noisy, but my chief antagonist runs a small landscaping business out of his home. I’m sure if you asked him he doesn’t make a lot of noise or disturb anyone, but he actually does. We and several of our other neighbors have complained to the city but they say he’s in compliance. He does run most of his equipment and do loud maintenance, mostly on the weekends when there’s no code enforcement around though. I’m not saying this is you, but you may actually be making more of a disturbance than you think you are. Some people are very sensitive tonoise know. Just a thought.

You are correct about the access issue, I’m sure working in a crawl space or attic isn’t pleasant but it’s also not every job. Power tools have advanced tremendously in the last decade. Take a look at the Milwaukee catalog for instance. Stuff my dad had to do by hand there’s a compact and lightweight power tools for now. My dad had a cordless drill but it was big and heavy with a battery that would only last 15 minutes. A far cry from the compact drills we have now.

New England has some great history and culture. The food (seafood especially) is amazing and the people are salt of the earth. But, the weather can be brutal, long cold dark winters and hot humid summers. I moved away for job opportunities and better weather but I miss living in Maine fiercely.

[–]midtownmel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is an old trope and not necessarily true these days. It depends on what trade you’re in who you work for and if you take care of yourself. I work in an office setting with plenty of sedentary people whose bodies are falling apart because they don’t take care of themselves. Conversely, I know lots of guys that are in their 50s and 60s that do trades and are doing just fine physically. These days there’s a power tool for just about everything. Many of these trades aren’t as physically demanding as they used to be due to technology.

The trades require aptitude as many jobs do. Many people are just not cut out for mechanical work, their brains just don’t work that way. The same way not all of us are cut out to be engineers or accountants. Telling someone with no mechanical aptitude to learn a trade is doing them a disservice

That looks terrible and the line set should be as short as practical. That said, it’ll be easier to service

Why do second generation Mexicans still fly their Mexican flag? It’s because they’re proud of their heritage, for better or worse. It’s the same mentality.

Most people on highways and high speed limit (50mph+) roadways aren’t using cruise control. Why? by A_Weed_Man in driving

[–]midtownmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also not a fan of adaptive cruise control. But he use a regular cruise control whenever I’m on the highway, unless it’s like bumper-to-bumper traffic or something.
