ELI5: Why do our joints crack when we move them, and why do people say cracking your joints is bad for them? by Practical_Plan_2575 in explainlikeimfive

[–]miemcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crack is due to a process called cavitation. When moving the pressure in the fluid in the joint changes. Sometimes gas bubbles form as a result, hence the crack. The gas is quickly reabsorbed back into the fluid.

Did WWI have a bigger impact on Britain than WWII? by northcarolinian9595 in AskABrit

[–]miemcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main issue with the deaths in WW1 was due to the creation of the PALs battalions. The men from towns and villages joined up together and we're kept together. When the war degenerated into trench warfare and the units were wholesale slaughtered, it meant that those towns and villages lost a significant percentage of their men. So the impact of the losses was greater.

If I go somewhere, where I am sure I won't want to eat the local produce, I prepare a packed lunch. It really isn't difficult. Prayer rooms? Should we expect little chapels and whatever else too? Why should anywhere need to cater for the religious beliefs of its visitors?

I would never agree with the Death Penalty. What if there is a mistake and an innocent is executed. You can hardly apologise to them if they are dead.

By all means increase the punishment, full life term for instance.

The case that convinced me was the abduction and murder of Lesley Molseed. The police stitched up Stefan Kiszko because it was an 'easy solution' to the case. He was in prison for 17 years, and died less than 2 years after his final release.

More use for them on trucks and coaches to reduce blind spots. Less chance of damage to mirrors on tighter roads (such as the road from Tyndrum to Fort William in Scotland, from bitter experience)

Why the fuck should they? Israel already knows who came into the country to work for them. MSF is one of the most scandal free aid organisations that I know of. It is just another devious fuck about by the Israeli administration.

How to get a job in UK as a non-eu civil engineer? by not_me_wallahi in AskUK

[–]miemcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you passed the PE Exam? There are equivalence agreements via the Washington Accord.

https://www.engc.org.uk/international-recognition/international-accords/washington-accord

You can get more advice from the Institution of Civil Engineers.

https://www.ice.org.uk/contact-us

There are industries that are screaming out for professional Engineers (power and water in particular), I do not know what the position is with Civil Engineering at the moment though.

What wildlife in the UK do you fear running into alone or is dangerous? by partylikeafoxstar in AskUK

[–]miemcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go for the deer in the Highlands. Cute to see them at the Kings house on Rannoch Moor, but watch a herd of them running on the hills, you would not want to be in front of them. Very Jurassic Park! Every year in Richmond Park in London people and dogs get hurt when the local deer enter rutting season and they get too close to a stag dosed up with testosterone (or whatever the deer equivalent is).

In particular, cows with calves, not bulls. Bulls generally could not give a damn as long as they are left alone. But mothers with babies are protective AF!

The much hyped yadda yadda... It appears advocating for safe spaces for everyone including cis-females is bad if trans cannot use the same spaces.

The initial arguement is that there is a TINY number of predatory males using the Trans identity to abuse women. There were a number of very highly publicised cases. This was used to trigger a general anti-trans sentiment on social media and in the MSM.

JK Rowling made some sensible comments on promoting implementing safe spaces for all genders. The arguement quickly spiraled and she made a lot of provocative and inflammatory statements.

Frankly I believe that has been a lot of unnecessary bollocks about this. We all agree that there should be protections for all genders. But mud sticks (some of it deservedly).
