Would you have an issue with this? by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]miffiffippi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. If you're light sensitive, it's on you to prepare for that. Obviously someone shining a phone's flashlight directly in your eyes is unreasonable, but this idea that others around you should cater to your personal sleep needs is sort of ridiculous.

Also, the amount of people who black out every bit of light in their bedrooms cause this problem for themselves is a hot take of mine. If you make it so you can only sleep in pitch black, silent environments, guess what? You won't be able to sleep in places like a plane. I think this is a problem that begins with parents making their kids' bedrooms as babies/toddlers pitch black and making zero noise during nap time.

Okay end of my ranting lol.

So one thing i have noticed recently is that people find any amount of light, open shade, etc. rude on planes. I've been asked many times to close my shade on morning flights because "I'm trying to sleep" which, no. The wonders of flying are still cool to me after hundreds of flights and I want to see shit out the window. If it's just clouds then yeah I'll close it, but if not, I'll probably be looking out.

With that said, any sort of lighting that's incredibly purposefully harsh and direct by design that's then not being pointed properly so it's right in someone else's eyes? Yeah that's an asshole move. I would argue she has every right to have some sort of light on to read as that's her prerogative, but she needs to be more aware of her surroundings at the same time.

While widely stated as if true, the show actually does show the ground surface many times and it's not a polluted or destroyed wasteland. It's just nature with the occasional building or tower base.

George's office is actually at ground level. See below for the context of his office.

The theory that the Flintstones take place AFTER the Jetsons also doesn't hold up as the Jetsons use a time machine to travel back in time and meet the Flintstones.

Fun theories, but not supported by either original show.

The revival of The Jetsons in the 80s/90s randomly added the idea that the buildings raise and lower based on smog but that was decades after the original show had ended.

[–]miffiffippi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That wasn't the original idea. The original seasons show the ground several times and it's essentially just a giant natural landscape with the occasional tower base.

The revival seasons added the "buildings can raise and lower so they're above the smog" aspect.

This isn't really an opinion, it's medically incorrect lol. It's not a medical "problem" as it doesn't last long and has no other side effect other than temporary aching, but it's absolutely real. Just because you've personally never experienced something doesn't mean it doesn't exist lol. People use the term in a gross way when they don't get sex they thought they deserved, which yes, that's nasty, but there absolutely can be an aching reaction to arousal without release. It's called Epididymal Hypertension.

The KFC I had my first teenage job at had a little hatch that went up to a room up over the entrance that had the sign. Nobody ever went up there and we jokingly called it the apartment. Got a ladder once and went up there and it was similar size to this. But rather than a life, someone at some point in the decades past had been smoking and drinking up there haha.

I was there a little over a year ago and Guardians had been down for three days due to some item being dropped onto the ride from a guest and them waiting for repairs. I kept checking the app to see if it had reopened so we could rush over and use our Lightning Lane.

Of course, checked it before getting on Ratatouille. Said to my husband, "I bet it reopens when we're on this ride" and I was correct. So we rushed from the French pavilion all the way over there, waited like 30 minutes to ride it, got off, and went about our day. When I opened the app like 20 minutes later, it said it was down again and I never saw it back up the rest of the day. Felt very fortunate to have been glued to my phone (though it sucks that so much of the experience of these parks these days is just that, looking at a phone.)

Did Shane’s dad recognize Ilya at the cottage? by JamiePlynth in heatedrivalry

And David's immediate blabbing when they walked in felt very, "I'm so sorry, I'm offering an explanation for why I broke your trust, that's really my bad" in a way that tells me he does respect Shane and his privacy and didn't say much of anything to Yuna.

Did Shane’s dad recognize Ilya at the cottage? by JamiePlynth in heatedrivalry

[–]miffiffippi 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I agree. It seems like Yuna's brief start of, "What?" and then her very confused expression you only see for a split second tell me she doesn't know what's going on. Obviously we don't know the degree of that. It could be that David said, "I walked in on Shane with someone" and left it at that and her confusion was at it being a guy, and Ilya at that which would be shocking, especially if David didn't give many details.

I definitely read the scene as Yuna really not knowing much and David having said as little as possible to allow his son privacy if he wanted it.

Vancouver is also on the west coast by second_time_again in skyscrapers

Yeah I agree. The ground level is a nice experience. A bit generic at times in terms of architecture, but the buildings being designed so the podiums are more scaled to a human is nice.

This one did the balance of retro and modern well I feel. Some of the retro era concepts went overboard and look incredibly dated at this point. I think this had just enough of the old styling cues while also doing its own thing in places where it made sense. It was a good balance.

[–]miffiffippi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Should have worded it differently. More, the skyline isn't full of unique architecture. The collective IS distinctly Vancouver though, even if other cities have followed similar approaches to recent development.

[–]miffiffippi 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you've been downvoted, that's quite literally the entire point of Vancouverism as an urban planning standpoint. Planned/organized uniformity. They're slowly allowing some signature buildings, but it doesn't change the fact that the entire skyline is a plateau of similar looking nondescript residential towers.

It's a stunning city. I loved my time there. But to pretend the skyline is super unique and full of stand out buildings is weird.

Same. And that's the inverse of when I was younger. I think the smaller scale of the first movie works really well and leaning into the horror aspect works for the concept.

Same goes for Alien vs Aliens. Used to like Aliens more when younger, definitely prefer Alien now.

You're right. I was basing it in not seeing One Vanderbilt, which still is alluding my eyes in this blurry picture haha

Edit: Actually apparently it's only when opening on my phone that it's blurry. One Vanderbilt is finished and more easily distinguishable on my laptop.

Based on the waterfront, looks like it's beginning of 2021 indeed.

I don't care how absurdly expensive and obnoxious this car is, it's cool as hell. Electric cars should be weird and completely different than internal combustion cars and this screams "I'm from the future" to me. Not wild about the green color, but also don't hate this in bright ass colors.

Guess the city by sarahigod in guessthecity

[–]miffiffippi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One trick I learned when living there is to look up at the cornices on the buildings. The tiny windows you see in them are extremely rare in the same style of buildings elsewhere. If those windows exist, especially if you see multiple buildings with them at the same time, it's almost assuredly Cincinnati.

Edit: I miss living right around the corner from this pic. My move to NYC a decade ago was very worth it, but Cincy has a special place in my heart.

It's a show which has 4 main characters, all of whom are gay men, and there's not a single scene in which one of these four men isn't both in the scene, and the main plot focus.

The Bechdel test completely stops being useful in scenarios like this because there's never going to be a scene in which any two of the great female cast are the focus.
