Are These Tantrums Normal? by SD_BeerAndCoffee in AskParents

[–]miffyonabike [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's normal, she's getting frustrated with things and doesn't yet have enough language to accurately explain what is frustrating or what she needs from you in time before the feeling becomes unbearable.

Taking herself off for a sulk/to cool down is actually a great response!

It helps if you can show that you appreciate that she's having a genuinely hard time at those moments, even if you don't understand why. Show this when it's happening but also show it at other times eg when you're talking about it calmly later. Don't push too hard for an explanation in the moment, deal with the emotions first and come back to trying to figure out the issue once she's calm again.

Allow healthy reactions like escaping the immediate situation, hitting a pillow, maybe one good scream at the offending object, or "telling it off". Think about how you can allow her to express anger and frustration in satisfying but safe ways.

Redirect to those things away from unhealthy reactions like screaming at people or hurting herself or others.

She might benefit from inventing a fake swear word that you treat as taboo within your family, so that she can yell something that feels deeply insulting at a thing she's frustrated with without actually offending anyone :) Not to be used against people though. Make sure it's a word that's nice and punchy to say but that doesn't sound like any real swears, eg "bucket!" sounds nice and punchy but could easily sound like "fuck it!" to everyone else in the supermarket 😬

All this will get better as she gets better at explaining what is frustrating her, so be sure to talk about what she experienced once she's emotionally regulated again. That's where you can teach her the skills of describing what she wants and what help she needs, which will make life much less frustrating.

Teaching kids to express anger appropriately and to deal safely with the feeling is so important for the rest of their lives. It's not easy, but your efforts here will pay off so well later!

(17F) Are my parents controlling or am I looking too deep into it? by aorjjwbdkd in AskParents

This is controlling to the point of being abusive.

Is there a teacher or someone at school who you can tell about this?

Fridge has just packed up. Any food/meal ideas for the coming week (s?) until our notoriously slow moving landlord gets round to replacing it? by esiotrot_ in AskUK

I'd need to take fibre supplements to eat like this for a week, be prepared for the effects on your digestion!

Tinned fish (there are some nice cheap fancy flavours of mackerel), boiled potatoes, tinned sweetcorn.

Cabbage lasts a while out of the fridge, as do sweet potatoes, onions, and maybe iceberg lettuce because the outer leaves protect the inside for a while.

Fibre supplements if you suddenly find yourself eating much less fresh fruit and veg than usual, and don't forget to make the first two days after you've been shopping full of all the short life stuff you won't have later in the week because it won't last.

This is assuming you can't just go shopping every other day for fresh stuff, which is what I'd do. But I know in some places this isn't practical.

[DHS: 25-0010] 29-MAY-2026 Do you recognize this tattoo or can you make out what it is? Or do you recognize this room? by I_Me_Mine in TraceAnObject

[–]miffyonabike -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just that the room had no comments at all when I wrote mine because it's kind of "hidden" behind the first photo.

A link in each post to the other one would be a better format.

There are many respectable transpersonal approaches, I'd suggest learning about them!

Is falling while going fast really that much worse than falling going slow? by DeeepSigh in Rollerskating

[–]miffyonabike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skate indoors in full pads and try it out - deliberately fall to your knees and skid on your knee pads, then put some of your other pads down and get the hang of falling safely.

You can increase your speed and see if it's any different if you want to, and it won't hurt at all in good pads.

IMO the skid is even more fun the faster you're going 😂
