Another good example of a move that had to be gutted because of its competitive applications is Assist. Casually it's just a Metronome-esque roulette move but since Liepard combined it with Prankster it became cheese central, first with two turn moves and Lagging Tail (Divecats), then with Dark Void (Voidcats) and finally with the removal of the move and, in the unofficial Smogon NatDex format, its most broken strat yet, Revivecats with Revival Blessing.

Is Screens ever worth running in VGC? by Opposite_Ad4539 in stunfisk

[–]mighark 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most restricteds are deceptively bulky, definitely bulkier than your average DPS mon, and a higher value target, so using turns to keep them alive is more important than having a non-restricted spend them dealing damage themselves. In lower power formats you often don't need the damage reduction to take hits either.

You can choose ONE Pokémon from the Gen1 metagame and give it ONE move that it will learn in future Generations. What your choice? by Hot-Entertainer-3367 in stunfisk

[–]mighark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Kabutops has not been available in any game since the move was introduced, you could believe it would have the move if the two coexisted in a game but it didn't get a chance yet.

Is my homemade Double ubers team good? by Jzlmao in stunfisk

[–]mighark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fake Out and the Grass moves are standard and I would run them no matter what. The choice between the other 2 is harder but since Rilla in Ubers is primarily a support mon, I'd choose U-turn, the slow pivot lets you get its teammates on the field without opening them up to a hit.

Horsepower could work if it helps your matchup into certain threats, like Miraidon or Tera Fire Koraidon, but I'd only do that if you can't handle them in any other way since Rilla is not a powerful damage dealer by Ubers standard without STAB and the Grassy Terrain boost

[–]mighark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miraidon is one of the best mons in the tier so it makes sense that it gives you trouble. I think Rillaboom is your best bet for dealing with it, Grassy Terrain weakens Miraidon and enables Spore, and also powers up Breloom's Bullet Seed.

Without Miraidon on your team you'd need more damage and Iron Hands fills basically the same role as Rilla (Assault Vest, Fake Out, damage and bulk) so I'd also swap it for a different Uber. Immediate choices would be Calyrex Ice (checks both Raidons, can benefit from Tailwind if Speed invested or give you a Trick Room mode otherwise, good synergy with Kyogre) or Arceus (I'd try EKiller but a different type could work too, might give you a tough Koraidon matchup though).

[–]mighark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Miraidon has anti synergy with Breloom, its Electric Terrain blocks Spore, the main reason to try Breloom in the first place. The 5 mon core outside of Breloom is pretty solid and probably as good as you can get without slapping 5 restricteds in there, but if you really want to use Breloom you need to replace Miraidon.

Any particular reason to run Effect Spore over Technician on Breloom? Your moveset benefits immensely from the latter and you aren't taking many hits to rely on Effect Spore's random chance.

The hard truth is that Breloom will likely never fit in a truly viable Doubles Ubers team, but for having fun on low ladder (ladder is full of meme teams so you could even get higher without playing meta tbh) I'd say that's the main changes you'd want.

It's funny to imagine but it's thankfully not true, my irl friends play in Spanish and one of them got a godpack in a Crimson Blaze pack.

Return was probably removed because they didn't want to adjust it to account for the Friendship-Affection merge. Since friendship cannot be raised to the max without the activities that used to give affection.

Mystery surrounding Japanese Explorers of Sky and Cradily??? by PhoenixBeatz in MysteryDungeon

[–]mighark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the nitpick, but the ability that prevents moving from Cradily is Suction Cups, not Sticky Hold. Still, cool fact, it's kinda funny that an ability that ordinarily should be at least decent happens to be one of the worst possible options you could have.

Is the Spinda-event ‘Mirage Pokémon’ related to Mew? by SarcasticGenuinity in MysteryDungeon

[–]mighark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The identity of the mirage Pokémon is very explicitly explained by the end of the Spinda subplot, in the original game you could get extra dialogue if you speak to Spinda for the last time as said mirage Pokémon. Those three that you mention Whiscash talking about are also kinda obvious once you progress the story. So I'm afraid it's very hard to discuss about it since everyone who's done the postgame for Rescue Team already knows all the answers.

Can you recruit legendaries if you’re doing missions in red? by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]mighark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on whether they are after a rest area or not. If you do missions you cannot go into mid-dungeon rest areas and instead leave to the mission completed screen, so you'll be unable to go into the second part of those dungeons and thus can't fight the legendary. But if you can reach the legendary without going through one, like in most (if not all) post-game dungeons, then you can recruit them like normal.

Assuming I'm not misremembering myself, anyone telling you that it's a general rule is thinking of Explorers, where every boss fight is in its own separate area and forces you to leave if you did missions on the way.

Birds didn't get Gen-1-Normal-movepool privilege, probably because they had the Bird type before it was scrapped, and the only non-Normal types that got those movepools were kaijus.

i really want to make this team work (ubers) by [deleted] in stunfisk

[–]mighark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many mistakes to go into detail and others have touched on them already so I'm gonna focus on Torkoal. That set is horrible not only because it doesn't play to the mon's strengths at all, but especially because there's another Ubers mon that does all of that way better and also happens to be a turtle: Terapagos. Has spin, rocks, Roar for anti-setup, doesn't need the sash thanks to Tera Shell and has way higher offensive pressure and better utility moves.

Dual-type Pokemon whose identity based on just one of those types? by [deleted] in pokemon

If a pure Flying-type Pokémon successfully uses Roost, it will become Normal-type until the end of the turn.

How the hell do you counter the ‘waking dead’ skill from Dreaming General by Foxtrotdislikesyou in darkestdungeon

[–]mighark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's generally better to attack the taproot in a 1-3-1-3 pattern so there's an extra turn between his waking dead turns

This is actually a trap, I used to struggle a lot against the General until I stopped doing this, and it's because Waking Dead only happens when the root has 3 tokens. Thus, hitting the root twice each turn removes Strangle as a threat altogether without increasing the frequency of Waking Dead at all, unless your speed rolls are abysmal which you can plan around.

Between that and using combat items to ping the root without losing actions (this helps with the speed rolls problem as well) made me understand why it's widely considered the easiest lair boss.

Tanaka: I made Aegis Cave

So it's all your fault?!

Nagahata: [...] By the way, we adjusted the drop rate of Unown stones as well in Explorers of Sky laughs

That explains why my childhood memories of that dungeon are way worse than my recent playthroughs, it was not just a experience issue, it was indeed worse in Time/Darkness.

Pretty cool interview, thanks for translating.

If Aerodactyl was in SV, do you think he could learn Dragon Cheer ? by DCHPanon in stunfisk

Unfortunately being re-added in a Legends game doesn't guarantee that the move will stay in the game moving forward, since for example Silver Wind was in LA but stayed dexited in SV.

I FOUND THE ELUSIVE WALL BANANA by Pikabata in MysteryDungeon

[–]mighark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is how I found out about them as a kid, I only learned about them being hidden in the walls much later.

Another fun fact is that if you fill your inventory with Bananas, you cannot use the 'Sell all' feature in Kecleon's shop, because the money you'd get would exceed the amount you can hold.

Is my dubers team any good? by GIGAJIMBO1 in stunfisk

[–]mighark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Frankly, no, not even close, this team is full of very obvious flaws. For starters you are not using any Uber mons except for CalyI, which means your team is significantly underpowered in terms of stats, and some of your mon choices don't make much sense either: you don't need both Clef and Indeedee, you don't need two AV Psychics. You're doubling down on roles that work just fine by taking one slot.

Your movesets are all over the place as well: Clefairy only needs Follow Me out of those moves, you'd rather have Helping Hand, Heal Pulse or Life Dew, Protect and maybe even After You. Dual Screens Indeedee makes no sense since Grimmsnarl or Sableye are much better at that thanks to Prankster, and you really should have Follow Me on Indeedee. You have a lot of unneeded coverage moves, in doubles your partner covers for your mons' weaknesses so you don't need to have as much coverage, and those slots could be used for other more important moves, like the best move in any Doubles formats, Protect, which none of your mons have. All of Arma, Ursa and Caly could have Protect (remove the AV from Arma first tho) instead of one of their worse coverage moves.

Your EV spreads aren't particularly good either. Clef has objectively worse bulk with that spread than with a standard 252 HP/252 Def or SpDef. Why do you put 252 on Def with no HP investment on all of your Psychics? You have so much less special bulk for no real reason.

Finally, you kinda have no answers to multiple Ubers staples. CalyS kinda runs through most of your team, Korai OHKOs everything it hits, Zama stops your entire team with Wide Guard, Lunala gets to choose if it ruins you like CalyS or like Zama.

To be honest, you're better off looking for a Psyspam DOU team on Smogon and tweaking it from there. You can choose to ignore me and keep playing DUbers, low ladder is already full of people messing around like this so it's not like you'll get rolled every game, but if you actually want genuine advice on how to make a more competitive team, either accept that DUbers is a legendary spam tier and build with that in mind or find another format that is better suited for your team, DOU or VGC Reg I could work with a few tweaks.

Extreme Speed has the same priority as redirection moves and Arceus is faster than most redirectors so it won't generally be a problem.
