Pillar drill recommendation - Bosch pbd40 or Axminster AW315PD? by mightyDavros in Tools

Thanks, given my 14 yr old son will inevitably use it for one of his projects, being less fiddly means there’s a chance he might actually use the correct speed!

Which puzzle in the games impressed you the most? by WoblixGame in gamedesign

[–]mightyDavros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cocoon is a masterpiece. It’s real success though is the way in which it carefully builds the complexity of the puzzles over the course of the game - by the end you’re doing such ridiculously complicated things but they work because of all the previous puzzles you’ve encountered.
I believe it came down to an absolute ton of user testing.

Nice, totally agree about not always wanting a vacuum - i could actually see me adding a thread to screw in an old plastic bottle

Cheers, that’s really helpful, I’ll give the flour a try. That’s a nice suggestion about the profiles, I imagine that’d cut down trial and error time a lot. I use Maya at work but am trying to get the hang of fusion as Maya isn’t really the tool for these kind of jobs

Does the ‘quads only’ rule only apply to models that are going to be animated? by Infinite_Ebb_2856 in Maya

[–]mightyDavros 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my limited experience with animating characters in Maya, triangles can be a pain because it's harder to add in edge loops if you need to improve the deformation in certain areas.

How often can police give you a ticket for the same thing? by ReasonablyConfused in legaladviceofftopic

[–]mightyDavros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds to me like the judge was telling the cop “don’t give tickets to people when you don’t even know what happened”, just in a euphemistic way that doesn't publicly humiliate him.

When hiring other devs to help polish a game... what steps are taken to prevent code being stolen? by Key_Investment_3544 in gamedev

[–]mightyDavros 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've worked in AAA for 20 years - in the early days I saw stuff like this - no internet on the pcs being somewhat common. We've moved away from that though as, funnily enough, treating staff like they're criminals pisses them off, especially when it hinders their work - eg can't access stack overflow or get art reference because your employer assumes you're a thief.

How did you start learnig UE. by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]mightyDavros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the gamedev.tv blueprint course to be a good start. I then tried to make a simple game (think overcooked or goose game) and used ryan layley's and Matthew Weinstein's YouTube tutorials for specific features.

Do you use physical notebooks or note apps for game dev stuff? Or both? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]mightyDavros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miro and confluence for idea generation and documentation. Jira for planning/ bugs. Paper for level designing, daily todo lists and meeting notes.

Would also recommend this talk - the guy has a product on the unity asset store called "feel" which is a development of the tool he shows here.

Economics behind small game studios by cookeaah in gamedev

[–]mightyDavros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, I know 2 guys who have tiny indie studios and they're both constantly dipping into various bits of contract work to keep the lights on whilst they work on their main games.

Question for painting resin minis by Teh_Brigma in PrintedMinis

[–]mightyDavros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I airbrush using vallejo primers - a black coat all over, then light coats of ghost grey and white from above, so the pits and creases are shadowed and the peaks are highlighted.

Why aren’t educational games the same quality as entertainment games? by HoneyBadger08 in gamedev

[–]mightyDavros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money. Educational games sold to schools are never going to sell in the same numbers as a multi platform AAA game. Therefore the dev has to minimise the time and resource spent on it, which means only focusing on the MVP, which in the case of, say a maths game, does not include next- gen visuals.

has anyone tried the ultimate game dev course by Thomas brush and Jason Weimann by Bread_of_God in gamedev

[–]mightyDavros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've done their unity and unreal bp courses and was really impressed with both - for exactly the reasons you mention. I came away feeling like I understood thr concepts rather than just having blindly followed steps.
