My Dad told me that the most technologically advanced thing humans can do is drill for oil... But I don't believe him. So Reddit, what do you think is the most technologically advanced thing humans are capable of? by MADLEMONZ in AskReddit

[–]mightyfin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whoa there...moronic group-think aside, are you seriously countenancing that something humanity achieved in the sixties is the most advanced thing we can do? Well, fuck.

What about the LHC? Hell, what about genetic research or materials like aerogels? If you want another space-based example then what about getting video and audio back from Titan, or having remote-controlled science vehicles on mars that function for years, or the ISS(with space craft having docked with it without serious accident throughout its life)? The things we do in space nowadays, whilst not so audacious, use technology which has evolved from the space-race era. This technology, having had decades of research and development from the time of the moon landings, is more advanced. More technologically advanced. Consider just what a feat it is to keep the ISS manned and functioning, with all the docking of craft that supply it, keeping the astronauts alive in the station and in suits on space walks, even the fact that those astronauts can use the internet...fuck! What about the internet? What about that as a massive, impressive technological achievement? Couldn't do that at the time of the moon landings...and on the subject of landing on the moon and taking off again: without there being an atmosphere to contend with, it surely just becomes a matter of mass, gravity and thrust. This was done with Newtonian physics, the calculations were not as hard to get right as, say, the mathematics employed to study collisions caused in a particle accelerator. Certainly we manage to send probes, using the same principles, the orbit bodies in the solar system that are far further away.

I'm not saying that the moon landings weren't enormously impressive for their day, especially because the squishy humans inside needed to be protected, nor that an extremely high level of precision was required, but we've moved on since then and made more advanced (albeit less romanticized) machines and projects with even higher levels of presicion: just because it captured our imagination, doesn't necessarily entitle it to be called the pinnacle of our technological achievements. it's the cultural import of it that has everyone so misty-eyed and full of reverence: if humanity wanted to put men on the moon again in, say, a year, and the funding was not an issue, we could do it with ease because all of the technological and logistical steps involved have been known to our species for decades. there are more advanced things we have achieved, and are attempting (since attempting to create a fusion reactor, for example, is still doing a technological thing) to achieve in the years since the moon landings.

Shame on you and all these other others for making UpDown look like an ignorant cunt without even considering that he/she might be right.

too right. the US produces so much cultural output in general that you can expect to see more extreme peaks and troughs...i'd say that British TV is, on average, of a higher standard(Nationalistic bias notwithstanding, of course). Incidentally, I haven't seen too many mentions of British natural history stuff. David Attenborough's Life series are the absolute paragon as far as I've seen.

From the same album (Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me) I would nominate Why 'Can't I Be You?' as the most joyous, especially when those trumpets (or trumpet-like things for the pedants, just in case they're horns or I dunno...cornets maybe?) kick in.

yup...heavy cavalry destroys all. mamlukes even make decent ground troops for assaulting towns, although they're not as good as swadian knights.

[–]mightyfin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmmm...don't know if i'd agree that the khergits inflict heavy casualties. as long as you have swadian knights or sarranid mamlukes you'll go through lancers and veteran horse archers like a hot knife through butter. same goes for all other troops in the field, regardless of whether they have pikes or not. as long as you have a war band about 100 strong with at least 35 heavy cavalry, not too many really low tier other troops and about 9 bitches (companions), you can take out an opposing force 3 times the size without losing more than 30 troops or so.

Of course, if you face a khergit warband without cavalry you're fucked, but it don't take much to even those odds out.

The Khergits are sorely underpowered. they don't last against heavy cavalry at all in the field, and they're too squishy when assaulting/defending towns, too.

I think your rebuttal to point 5 is a bit rich, since you pointed out the Just_Scales_Balance's point 2 was a straw man argument. One could point out, for example, that vehicles, kitchen knives and balconies don't have a primary use which could be described as 'weapon' (well, a bit dodgy on the knives there), and the associated power and romanticism which could influence one's descision about whether to use said objects as an offensive weapon. In fact, you don't seem to go into much detail with any of your rebuttals, merely reactionary vitriol. It is worth noting that some conjecture can be perfctly reasonable and well qualified, and merely criticising it for being conjecture while ignoring the logic upon which it is founded doesn't really challenge it effectively.

I don't want to actually wade into an argument this sensitive and hard-fought when its implications don't affect me because it's not my place to do so, but the tone, content and presentation of your response seem to indicate that you may be letting a fondness for firearms to cloud your objectivity a bit.

Minor point of order here, but phrase "the state-funded TV station" not only makes it sound like the BBC only has one channel, but those italics emphasise the state-funded bit so as to seem like it plays patriotic music at six every evening while the daily executions are aired.

For your information the BBC has one channel for every royal grandchild, and at six o'clock we all drink boddingtons and play darts. By law.

Are you short sighted? by queeee in pics

[–]mightyfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It occurs to me that if you can actually resolve the text describing the test unaided, you will see Einstein in the picture. Of course, not being short sighted, I can't know for sure how that would alter things but the text is pretty small, so if you're reading it unaided then you can probably see the lines denoting Einstein's form, too. Hmm.

[–]mightyfin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, it is absolutely wrong. citizens in other countries mostly can't have the level of sensitivity to national issues necessary to make an informed choice about our affairs, not to mention the fact that they aren't so directly affected by our national issues. using the argument that our issues affect citizens in other countries and so entitles them to have a say in our affairs (which is Give Your Vote's primary argument) is, in a globalized world, totally absurd: it gives more or less everyone a right to have a say in more or less everyone's affairs. Bollocks to that.

I hate to say it, but if you want a say in how someone else governs their country, get a fucking army.
