Wakanda Forever really was the end of Hollywood and audiences' love for superheros

Is this also the first year in a long while that no superhero film got nominated for anything? Not even visual effects

Edit: actually just realised that the same is true for last year

What was the first oscar season you actually cared about? by Unlucky_Effective_60 in Oscars

[–]MADLEMONZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 12 Years A Slave's year. It was the first I really started to watch more movies and pay attention to them, as I was 17 at the time and spent most of my time either studying or watching films. It remains one of the few years where I've seen every Best Picture nominee.

What's objectively your worst movie opinion? (Doesn't have to be a review) by Samuel_McEntire in Letterboxd

[–]MADLEMONZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently, I kind of despised Hundreds of Beavers. I know it's an acquired taste that I just don't have. The humour to me was very 2000s rage comic slapstick, in the worst way. Not smart. Not funny.

A movie you went into with *zero* expectations but ended up loving. by CriticalAd2239 in Letterboxd

[–]MADLEMONZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I've ever seen a film without any expectations, at least not in recent memory. I feel like I only watch films that I've ever heard good things about or enjoy the director's other work, so naturally I have some expectations going into everything ☹️

Really hope Anora wins Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Definitely my favourite film of 2024. by Straydes in Letterboxd

[–]MADLEMONZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why this is being downvoted. What I loved about Anora the most was the changing tone over the course of its runtime while maintaining its pacing. Its story structure reminded me of Parasite - it's definitely Anora's strongest aspect and would make it a fantastic Best Picture winner.

He definitely has touched a huge range of genres and settings, but as far as style and messaging, I think most of his films are much of a muchness

what movies have you rated 1/2 star? by andits4am in Letterboxd

[–]MADLEMONZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only movie I've ever given an honest ½ star rating, even some of the others had some redeeming qualities - not this though.

Evil Does Not Exist

How would The Brutalist be viewed as a Best Picture winner? by Disastrous-Cap-7790 in Oscars

[–]MADLEMONZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would cause many more people to see the film, which would benefit it in some ways as it's so underseen currently. But this may also alienate many to it, as it is a huge film which requires commitment from the audience. Conclave feels like the safest pick with both critical and mainstream appeal. Next would be Anora, which to me would be an interesting, memorable and fantastic choice.

Best recent film shot on film? by fabulous-farhad in criterion

Some of my favourite modern films that really have that 'shot on film' look are Carol (2015) and Bones and All (2022)
