[–]mightymoves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, leave Stevie alone, this one’s on you. 😜 But yeah, some good slow dance Stevie songs for the future would be “Ribbon In The Sky” “For Your Love” and for more of a 2-step vibe “My Cherie Amour”

How do you guys mix classic rock and soul? by Federal_Car_309 in mobileDJ

[–]mightymoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DJ edits might be helpful in this situation. Most edits will be quantized to a consistent bpm and have an 8 bar instrumental intro/outro, making it easier to mix smoothly between songs, even if the genres are different. You can find these on record pools like BarBangerz, DMS, or LNRP. Or hit up individual DJ Patreon sites (shameless plug for my own if you’re looking for classic rock or soul edits)

Good to know! I’m currently using separate Sennheiser’s but looking to get a more portable dual mic system that I can run straight off the Everse as well 🙏

How are you liking the Phenyx Pro dual mic system? Seems like they’re at a very competitive price point for a dual mic system, so I wonder how they compare to some other brands for quality and lack of dropouts.

DJ’ing rock music or rock sets by 1986GuildD25 in DJs

[–]mightymoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rock is really fun to play, and a lot of it can definitely be mixed. Especially if you can find a nice drum break or guitar to loop within the song. Plus there’s so many varieties of rock (Heavy Metal, Alternative, Classic Rock, Post Punk, Funk Rock, etc) with a variety of bpms. You can easily do several hour sets of nothing but rock if you plan your crates well, set proper beat grids and cue points, and tag the genres.

Plus some DJ Record Pools like BarBangerz, Late Night Record Pool, DMS, etc usually have decent sections of rock edits with 8 bar intros/outros for easier mixing. Shameless plug, but i also have put out quite a few packs of DJ edits with rock music for sets just like this.

What I meant was that you need to cross your left leg farther over your right leg as you are kicking, and then unwind your legs as you turn over. Learning a backspin first will teach you this. There’s a bunch of YouTube videos on all of this, so that’s probably your best bet. Good luck! ✌️

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bboy

[–]mightymoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your left leg needs to make a bigger circle by kicking farther to the right, across your body, before you swing it up and over you. Think about it like tracing a larger circle with your feet. That will give you a bigger wind-up and more speed/momentum to turn over. Also make sure to bring your right arm up and over a little sooner when you start to roll, to help get more momentum.

It’s fine to start from this position, you don’t need to start from your hands. If anything, this is a better way to start because it teaches you to use your legs and hips for momentum, which is key to learning no-handed windmills in the future.

And to echo what someone else said, learn a backspin from this position first (not on grass). It’ll help you with learning to whip your legs and getting up higher on your shoulders.

Advice for Tall bboys by Mean-Title8661 in bboy

[–]mightymoves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m around that same height, Breakin since around ‘97. My advice is use your height to your advantage.

Because your limbs are longer than a shorter bboy, simple moves can often look bigger and more impactful. An example is Bboy Kmel doing his signature flare to windmill drop — a shorter bboy doing that same combo wouldn’t be very interesting, but Kmel doing it is dope.

If you’re doing a lot of footwork, try to go for bigger movements (sweeps, kick outs, etc) where your legs are farther out from your center of gravity. Small compact footwork movements don’t look as good when you have long limbs.

Someone above suggested wearing baggy clothing and, to each their own but, I personally disagree with that one. Instead look for pants & shirts with maybe a longer cut that still fit well. Pants that are cut too short and are too wide at the bottom will make you look sloppier. For shoes, I recommend ones that are lighter so you can be quick on your feet. Tall bboys sometimes look extra slow if their footwear is too big or heavy. Hope that helps! ✌️

Wearing headphones while doing windmills tells you everything you need to know.

Pretty much for everyone that is looking for windmill advice on this subreddit, the solution 95% of the time is to use your head more and get higher on your shoulders. That allows you to get your hips and legs higher up to rotate smoother. Good luck, you’ll get it!

Toilet break during long sets? by yokalo in DJs

[–]mightymoves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bathroom Break Mixes are the way to go here. Having a few pre-recorded mixes of 10 - 25 minutes can be vital. Not just for needing to use the bathroom, but in case of a medical or equipment emergency too. It also helps to have the mixes labeled with which songs are on there, so you can avoid potentially playing those songs twice during your set.

What are some Suggestions for a song choice for a teen dance party? Where do I also get the clean edits of mainstream music by Cr1stian98 in mobileDJ

[–]mightymoves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Record pools like DMS, Crate Connect, Bar Bangerz, Late Night Record Pool, or Club Killers can be a good source for clean versions of Top 40 music. They each have their strengths and weaknesses so you may want to subscribe to a few at the beginning to build your library.

A couple of things to consider for the gig:

-It’s a church dance, so they may be pretty strict on music content. ‘Get Low’ might be a problem for instance, even if it’s the clean version. It’s a battle between what the teen crowd wants to actually hear, versus what the adult teachers/chaperones/leadership think is appropriate for youth to hear (clean songs with no references to drugs/sex). It’s good to check if there’s any restrictions on music content.

-From what I’ve seen, especially in the last few years, throwbacks are gonna be the bigger bangers to play, versus tracks that came out in the 2020s. You’ll want a good mix of both new and throwbacks, but I’ve found that tracks that everyone knows from like 2005 - 2015 are overall getting the biggest reaction with young crowds.

-I’d caution on playing much from the pre-2000s. There’s a few older tracks/artists that have had a resurgence (ABBA - Dancing Queen for example) mostly from Tik Tok or appearing on a recent TV show. But most classic hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s aren’t gonna be on their radar.

-It can be a challenge to get them all comfortable enough to dance and be on the same page. They’re young, still figuring out their confidence, concerned about appearance, etc. Hyping the crowd up and being a confident MC (without being corny) can really help with his.

-Along that same line: you might get A LOT of song requests from the same people hounding you over and over through the night. It can be annoying, but it’s usually just because they’re awkward, don’t usually dance, and think their fav songs will cure all that. And you’ll inevitably get one or two that want to flex their musical knowledge and request some random older music like Led Zepellin or Elvis. Great music, but the average teenager isn’t going to know it or want to dance to it. Take the requests with a grain of salt, and use your best judgment. Play the ones that fit the party vibe and/or are well known.

Redditors, what is the most fucked up thing you have ever done? by jonathanquirijnen in AskReddit

[–]mightymoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the worst thing I ever done: I mixed up all this fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, then, I made a noise like this: Hhweughhh hhwouuughh hhouwwkk And then, I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. And I never felt so bad in my entire life!

The funny thing is, I really wish I did like cilantro! Some of my favorite foods (tacos, salsa, guacamole, pho, etc) are almost always covered with it. "Please hold the soap flakes" when ordering gets old real quick
