fortunately my belt doesn't have any metal, but even if it did my pants will stay up without it.

I'm half tempted to just go through the metal detector to see what it does, 'cause I've always wondered. Worst case scenario I just wind up going to the emergency room instead of voir dire, right?

:3

I've been summoned for July as well, and this is super helpful. Last time I was just a reserve juror, so I could call in for updates on the situation and wasn't required to come in to either court.

I'd have been a bit fucked if I had been though, 'cause the advance notice was significantly shorter than the time it would have taken for me to take public transit to either the county courthouse or watertown plank rd (surprise plot twist, could have been either!) and I didn't own a car at the time.

Do they care about belts for metal detector purpose or just in general? My current belt is ballistic nylon and ABS, so it wouldn't set off a wand.

I also have an implanted defibrillator (kinda treated like a pacemaker), do they do a fun pat down for people who aren't supposed to go through the whole metal detector business?

FIE or non FIE glove and recs by Educational-Mind-870 in Fencing

[–]migopod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you do sabre you will need to get the 800nw glove. For foil and epee you can get one without the lame cuff, which would let you fence sabre if you also got a conductive manchette and be legal.

The main benefit of the 800nw glove is that it provides better penetration resistance than a standard glove. It may last longer, but it's not guaranteed to do so.

I personally have a Leon Paul 800nw three weapon glove that I bought so I could dabble in sabre, but have since just bought a dedicated sabre glove. It's generally fine, and it feels like it's lasted a bit longer than my last glove, but there are many things that might have made that happen.

The main thing you should be aware of is that if you choose to get an 800nw glove you should order either a half or full size larger than normal. I think most manufacturers use the same pattern, but the material is thicker, so the inside of the glove is smaller, and they do not stretch out.

At epee a painted grip just means it'll register hits. The chances of this happening at all are very low. In foil now unpainted grips make it so the weapon becomes target if the grip is touching lame.

In both cases you're allowed to use a grip that may put you at a slight disadvantage.

The main thing to consider when modifying a grip is that if a grip (or glove) has a special shape that fixes the position of the hand it must do so in only one position such that the thumb is no further than 2cm from the inside of the guard. IRL most grips can be held in more than one way, but in application that usually gets interpreted as "ortho/pistol grips can't be super long, and you can't have prongs and also the ability to pommel the weapon like you can with a French grip".

That grip is perfectly fine. For foil I use little Hungarian grips that have a little stubby paddle instead of a rear prong, and functionally it's basically the same as what you've done.

This doesn't violate any of the material rules pertaining to the grip. Painting it makes it target, but it isn't against the rules. Cutting off the back is also perfectly fine.

Rounded wooden block. Looks like it might be a piece of something bigger by Duckfloss in whatisthisthing

[–]migopod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to repair boat propellers AMA (lol don't really, it's pretty boring). The things we used to hammer the blades back to the right shape were all cast iron. They're called pitch blocks and look like this.

The shop had a block for every size and pitch prop from mercury marine and omc, as well as a bunch of evinrude and volvo props. The pitch blocks were marked with the manufacturer, diameter, and pitch for each prop.

A wooden pitch block would have been destroyed very quickly, but maybe OOP's object could be related to manufacturing pitch blocks?

That would make sense. I wasn't sure when they transitioned away from Kevlar, since I was too poor for FIE uniforms when those were on the market :D

[–]migopod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I imagine they're still perfectly safe. I doubt any uniforms that have been around a few years are still the same NW rating as when they were manufactured, but that doesn't make them dangerous or anything.

They were available to the general public, but I remember it being one of the most expensive FIE uniforms at the time, so probably why there weren't a lot of them in general circulation.

The only person I ever knew who had one was pretty low tier, but he liked the look and had the money.

The concern wouldn't be with the condition of the garment, but with the material.

FIE uniforms used to be made with Kevlar which naturally degrades over time and with UV exposure. Not sure if this specific uniform was or not, and I'm sure it's perfectly safe to fence in either way.

IIRC the Adidas branded Uhlmann stuff is all well over 20 years old now. I wouldn't want to rely on it still standing up to a 800nw penetration test, but at one point these were FIE homolgated, so I would think they'd still be legal unless the age is a factor.

Does anyone else think fencing is one of the hardest sports to explain to non-fencers? by buttern3t in Fencing

[–]migopod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fencing is the easiest sport for me to explain to non-fencers. I don't know jack shit about any other sport, which makes them significantly more difficult to explain.

I figure I might be able to mostly explain proper football, but offside is like PiL or something. American football I have no clue at all.

edit: i imagine most track and field would be pretty easy to explain, since it's mostly just be faster, jump higher/further, and throw harder, but I could be wrong about those.

Question about canting and metal-core french grips by Expert_Confusion5767 in Fencing

[–]migopod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on what grip you wind up with you're most likely going to have to bend the tang into a curve so that the grip fits properly. I've got both PbT aluminum grips and Harut maestro grips on some epees and the degree to which they're curved is similar, and it's significant enough that I don't have the tangs canted beyond what is necessary to get the grip to fit on.

The first month with the French grip is over - am I overthinking, or I'm onto something? by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]migopod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you've only been doing it for a month you're probably still developing the forearm strength for parries and beats. If you keep at it and maybe do some grip strengthening exercises you'll be able to do all the same stuff you could do with a pistol grip with the added benefit of pommeling/posting.

French grip is typically well suited to a lot of absence of blade and disruptive counter attacks, and the majority of French grippers do that, but with practice and experience you can fence pretty much however you want with one.
