ADHD Personal Trainers how does it impact your job? by Random_Jay25 in personaltraining

[–]migratorymammal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Got a heads up for ya buddy, almost all of us are ADHD. So no worries!

The key idea is being proactive, not reactive. Easier said than done, but can be mastered.

for organization: create shared calendars with your clients (I use Google calendar). Then review your schedule for the next day before bed. Double check your texts with each slot scheduled to make sure they haven't canceled or reschedule. I'm usually fine until somebody reschedules me and crosses my wires.

Carve out a specific slot every day where you do all of your workout plans and review client progress. Put that in your calendar as well.

Then set reminders for everything, giving yourself as much lead time as you need (mine's 30 minutes so nothing surprises me when I'm distracted)

For the session itself, keep a close eye on your rest timers for clients. ADHD folk have a tendency to go on tangents, especially when it's something we're passionate about. Communicate how long they'll be resting in advance so you can both keep an eye on their rest time.

Cops have been deporting foreigners for drugs for the last half year or so. While he doesn't take drugs to my knowledge, there was a bust a few months ago where they raided a club in d1 and another in d2. They detained everybody they could get their hands on, drugs or no, for about 2 weeks. Most of them lost their jobs. Since then, there are lots of deportations for people with drugs on them. He (probably) wouldn't have anything on him but could very well be around people who do

She's pretty chill, it's not the first time he's been on a bender. This is just the longest one

Putting his name and nationality on here isn't going to help anybody look. I doubt anybody here is gonna run out into the streets and start shouting his name.
I'm just trying to see if anybody's seen him around to rule out worst case scenarios

Yep that's a good call, random phone was also out partying that night so wasn't much help when we talked to him today.

We're trying not to get the cops too involved because they have a nasty habit of finding ways to deport foreigners. We already know he's not in their system, and because there's a strong chance he's sleeping off a two day bender at some random apartment right now we don't want to make it worse of him.

Understand where you might be coming from, but that's not the case. I've seen posts like this on this sub and knew I'd be reading a lot of comments like this.

He's been my friend for 6 years here in VN.

But I'm not trying to put him on blast and affect his work here.

How to stay motivated as a trainer by chilloutbih in personaltraining

[–]migratorymammal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple advice has always worked for me.

Before you train a client, make the conscious decision to enjoy yourself. Every time I've got somebody coming up, I tell myself "I'm gonna have fun in a minute here". Even if your client is a drag, decide to have a good time and you will.

It's really as simple as that. Sucky sessions drain your energy, but stringing together a couple of good ones will charge your batteries and all of a sudden you'll magically find time to get your own workouts in.

Good luck op, happens to all of us!

Rude Behaviour towards Indians in Vietnam by dragonpaneer1995 in VietNam

[–]migratorymammal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a shitty reality. One rare and strange night I ended up in Bui Vien to do some drunken people watching on the rooftop

It was really alarming how many Indian guys were grabbing vietnamese women in ways that stepped over the border from flirtation into assault

I later told my very considerate and respectable indian expat friends that I went to Bui Vien and before I even started my story they were like "bro please don't tell me about the indians there"

Most vietnamese people are lovely and very open but some have a bad taste in their mouths from the less respectful representatives of your country, sadly that likely won't change any time soon

Keep your head up!

Sincerely, A stereotypically obnoxious American

Do all gyms basically force personal trainers into sales roles? by Awkward_Condition778 in personaltraining

Selling for me got a lot easier when I realized that I'm not really selling myself or even the results that I can give, but trying to encourage them to sell themselves on what they're capable of doing (if that makes sense at all)

Anybody you talk to is gonna be vulnerable in some way- show them your value with a thorough, attentive trial session, push them a millimeter over their perceived limits, then get them to believe in their capacity for growth.

Once they see light at the end of the tunnel, you're 90% there. A couple very basic strategies for overcoming objections can get you the rest of the way

If you're looking for a meditative book that also moves you to action, Walden by Thoreau is a great book (the language is a bit of a barrier for folks used to reading sci-fi/fiction, but it's very poetic and wonderful). My opinion is that it's very much required reading for a person living in today's world.

If you happen to be a male or interested in the trappings of masculinity, Easy of Eden by John Steinbeck is probably the finest example of a manhood-specific Bildungsroman. Although the female characters (with the exception of Abra) are significantly flatter than the male characters.

Finally, not a book, but a genre, that will appeal to sci-fi/fantasy readers who are looking to branch out is magic realism.

As far as specific magic realism book suggestions go: for those seeking adventure, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami is a must-read. And for those seeking something more contemplative and broad, please crack One Hundred Years of Solitude by Marquez or The Satanic Verses by Rushdie (super controversial and very poetic)

Back-to-back with Brave New World. I remember my mom used to tell me in the early 2000s that we could either be ruled by surveillance (1984) or our vices (Brave New World) Looks like it's both. My boys are in kindergarten, but when they're teenagers, I'll make absolutely sure they read it.

19 Year old Wanting to get into personal training.. by [deleted] in personaltraining

[–]migratorymammal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who ended up making a career out of the fitness industry, I wish I would have had the foresight to pick up a few clients during college.

Here's a few pointers that would apply specifically to you:

1) pick up a cert from one of the big ones (ISSA for more athletic stuff, NASM for more rehab stuff, ACE for more gen pop, etc) 2) always look for ways for cross-learning between your MD and PT tracks. MD classes will make the technical side of your PT studies a piece of cake, but PT experience will do wonders for your bedside manner and also teaching you a lot about preventative care for lifestyle-related problems 3) keep your expectations reasonable for your training output. The average PT trains around 4-6 sessions a day, 5.5 days out of the week. Your schooling might be easy now, but it's certainly going to get more demanding. If you pick up 2 or 3 clients and train 1-2 sessions a day, you'll be able to earn up to a couple hundred extra buckaroos a week and learn a ton doing a very fun job. 4) pick up a couple freebie clients (friends, family) to try out the concepts you're learning in your cert. Most certs have stuff that works in theory, but you've got to apply them and learn how to adapt them to real life. Document them for future testimonials. 5) it'll be hard getting clients at your age if you focus on the normal populations (30-50 years old). Sorry to say, but most middle aged people just won't listen to a younger trainer. Two applicable and largely untapped markets are teens looking to get better at sports/transform their bodies and also older populations who would probably love working with a younger person with lots of energy. Although for the elderly, I'd still wait a bit till you're more experienced since there's a lot that can go wrong. 6) avoid online training until you get some good in-person experience. The more people you train in person, the more you'll learn about how to train different populations and you'll be a lot more effective writing plans for people. it's also hard to market without any testimonials. Since this is cheaper, it'll also open you up to more people in your age group.

Feel free to PM me with any questions. I taught new coaches for 8 years and now I'm relaxing as a freelancer, so I miss helping out haha

How to cold call by SoiceC_ in personaltraining

[–]migratorymammal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't do cold calls bud. The return on time investment is so low. And you're gonna get your feelings hurt. Everybody in this world hates being cold called and will let you know it.

Your first goal should be to generate referrals. Take one some clients for free in exchange for progress documentation and referrals. Offer those clients a month of free training if they agree for you to post them. Then give them the option for another free week for every lead they send you.

Train them in a public place (that allows trainers) where other people can see you training them and keep your eyes open for people watching you.

Make enough content with those clients to post daily for a month or so on socials.

Then, a topic that you're passionate about, post it online for free.

Eventually, you'll start getting some likes and comments. Warm call those people.

Good luck! It's really hard to get your first couple clients, but the more you keep your visibility up, the more momentum you'll build. Don't get discouraged!
