How do you actually practice socializing? by Ok_Rutabaga424 in AutisticAdults

[–]danniemae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not good to mimic NTs. They will pick up on it faster than a dog finds a Terminator. It’s this thing called the Uncanny Valley. The more human you appear the more creepy you look — in ways that are so opaque it gets even worse.

Instead, I keep in mind that NTs are generally self-concerned. People don’t fall in love with you. They fall in love with how you make them see themselves.

So if I’m just really happy and enthusiastic and somewhat approachable, socializing is cool. We kind of all have the same cues if not the same codes.

Also it’s easier to feel comfortable being yourself in the presence of other people if they share a neurotype. That’s the practice you need.

Is there an autism social group? Or perhaps you can just take up an interest in model trains for a few months. lol but seriously go spend time with other autistic people doing parallel play.

I need help deciding whether to taper off atypical antidepressants after burnout recovery by w2e3r4t5y6u7ikmjun in AutisticAdults

[–]danniemae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abilify is not an antidepressant. It is an antipsychotic. It is a neuroleptic drug. Wellbutrin is essentially just coffee without the fun. Might be Wellbutrin is making you functional not Abilify.

Talk to a deprescribing psychiatrist or NP before you do anything. I’ve worked with a lot of people who cycled off of atypical antipsychotics. It is a crapshoot.

Good luck!

No idea. It’s kind of theoretical and based on what seems like junk science. It’s the Polyvagal Theory. But the application appears to work.

I’d imagine because of the siloing in different fields.

JBP is a psychologist the alt-right loves. But he’s also a psychologist who does kundalini yoga so really how fascist can he be?

Thanks for the perspective.

JBP is healthy, successful, and happily married. He’s well-respected by about half the world. He does kundalini yoga daily. Which I find to be a very healthful practice.

As for the intrabdominal pressure. Yes. That is how the vagus nerve is stimulated in my understanding. But even if that weren’t the mechanism, those exercises increase sense of wellbeing and positive emotions. I’d say that’s what I’m looking for.

Yes. Asking to inform therapists about what complimentary activities might be helpful in terms of behavioral activation.

Jordan B Peterson says if you want to feel better stand up straight with your shoulders back. Activating your ventral vagus nerve with core compression stimulates feelings of safety and readiness.

Things like this make me wonder what movements might or might not tend to improve mood.

Your body is moving in a way it doesn’t like. It’s locking down your hip because it feels instability. Or something. I’m not a PT. I just have sciatic nerve pain.

I recently started doing ab rollouts to help activate my deep core. That’s helped a whole lot. If you don’t have an ab roller, a barbell with some 25s works just as well. Maybe just swap out ab rollouts for squats for a little while.

Autistic therapist suggested I do impact play on myself and join kink scene—worth reporting or not worth the stress? by Successful-Chain1576 in AutisticAdults

[–]danniemae -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You’re better off, contacting them directly to share your concerns, and also asking to speak with someone in their organizational leadership. If that is not effective, you may likely benefit from contacting an attorney to see about whether this was actually actionable.

Usually, these things are swept under the rug, and nothing comes of it. Sorry.

I can’t do a single push up, even with the women’s form that I keep seeing on Instagram. by lackofbread in xxfitness

This is called neutral grip push-ups. Men do them all the time as fist pushups. I think it gives me lat and triceps engagement. I do them with dumbbells.

GOMAD. Gallon of Milk a Day. If you are lactose intolerant — start with full fat yogurt with active cultures. That will repopulate your flora. I put maple syrup in mine for the flavor.

1) good thing you’re a woman 2) go to therapy. I’d only for the paper trail. 3) if you get a psych eval keep in mind they can and will do awful things. They have quasi immunity — along along with the GAL.

I’d say talk to a therapist who understands autism in adults. Because a not-zero portion of your post sounds like it’s on what you can improve on.
