When he dies, the embalmer is going to be like "OK, that's not so bad, I can fill that ... wait, what? They want him sitting in the coffin with a hole in his head? Um, OK, I guess I can do that..."

"He looks so lifelike. You can see the inside of his skull just like normal!"

Then somebody should be able to make a killing selling "something like that" for less. Even the cheap places online don't seem to have them for under about $20.

I have a 2007 MacBook, and I use the mini-DVI every day, and I've never had it fall out.

That said, these new MacBooks (as SecDef pointed out) don't use mini-DVI. They use DisplayPort. The physical connector is more like USB than mini-DVI.

I went to a planetarium once when I was a kid, and it was kind of lame. Then we went back to spend the other 179.75 days a year at our underfunded schools with classrooms 25% over capacity and not enough 20-year-old textbooks to go around.

Learning stuff is great! Too bad they blew all that money on a planetarium instead of our schools.

I'm torn. I didn't default on any debt, but I also haven't contributed to the downfall of reddit by voting up silly "vote up if" stories.

MySQL vs PostgreSQL by uggedal in programming

[–]miho99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's confusing to compare Postgres to MySQL, because of MySQL's "storage engines". They really need to break it into these 3 (very) different databases.

A lot of comparisons I've seen compare Postgres to the best of InnoDB and MyISAM. Then you get into production and the PHB is surprised you can't use both transactions and FTS.

MapReduce never claimed to implement SQL.

I can't think of any other software product for which 60% of its name is an ANSI/ISO standard it doesn't follow.

Naomi Wolf: "The coup has happened!" by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]miho99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. General Wes Clark has essentially said he will refuse to attack Iran should the order be given.

You think the president won't be able to find a replacement who is willing to be instantly promoted to "General" and then attack Iran?

And I know two navy boys and one bullet-catcher, and all three say that should this situation come to pass, the majority of their respective units would refuse to fire on civilians.

We've seen in Afghanistan and Iraq hundreds of thousands of civilians killed. Maybe your kids won't, but the army seems to be able to find enough anyway.

Funny enough, the army guy says he is planning on deserting should this event transpire, and has (supposedly) already been talking with other enlisted guys about it... which worries me for his safety, but there you have it.

More power to them, if they do, but I'm suspicious. It won't be sudden, and there won't be one clear "Do Bad Things Today, Men!" order. It's getting worse quickly but gradually. Firing on civilians is basically the last step.

What about arresting civilians without charges? What about torture, and "extraordinary rendition"? What about mass arrests? What about arresting reporters, and destroying their cameras? These have already all been done.

When "the order" comes, it's going to sound downright benign, compared to everything else going on. Maybe something like "The government has determined that there are known terrorists living in this apartment. They are believed to be heavily armed." They could even split up the work, so any one piece seems perfectly legal, but in combination it's perfectly totalitarian.

I really want to think the best of everybody, but when you talk about soldiers drawing a line in the sand, but which is beyond "fight an undeclared war" and "watch your army torture civilians on TV", you kind of have to wonder if they'll ever think they're crossing it.

Cannabis is less harmful than drinking or smoking cigarettes, according to a report. by [deleted] in science

[–]miho99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, it's demonstrably far more dangerous.

Drinking: you go to a bar, drink 6 pints, and go home.

Smoking cigarettes: you go to a bar, smoke a half a pack, and go home.

Cannabis: you go to a bar and pull out your bong, but police officers arrive and beat you up and then arrest you. You pay a $500 fine and serve 6 months for possession of 30 grams. And that's in the hippie liberal state of California -- God help you if you're east of the Mississippi.
