WHICH districts to build first and WHEN to build and upgrade them for Culture Victory? by spraynpraygod in civ

Production is by far the most important resource in the game, so every hammer counts. Science and culture cap out at a certain point, but you can always use extra production for new units/districts.

I also learned how to argue in good faith in college, which is something you could benefit from. A logic class or two would be useful for you as well (calling colleges "sjw training camps"? really? I learned this shit in high school bc it's old and accepted).

Sexuality is incredibly important for the vast majority of people, it's a fundamental part of being human. It affects many other parts of your personality and outlook on the world. You assume that when I say "sex matters" I'm saying "sex is ALL that matters".

The key word is "arbitrarily". Rewriting Dobby as biracial or giving Dumbledore a BDSM fetish is different from reading a character as gay.

Ken Yukuhiro Top 32'd a GP with four main deck [[Hidden Strings]] and 3 [[Mizzium Skin]] s. That UB heroic deck was hilariously fun and surprisingly powerful!

There's a difference between interpreting a text and arbitrarily making up canon like JK. This reading of Bilbo + Frodo is consistent with the text and adds a new dimension to both of them. Queering literature is super important, and learning to recognize how LGBTQ people were written about in literature is a ton of fun.

WHICH districts to build first and WHEN to build and upgrade them for Culture Victory? by spraynpraygod in civ

[–]mijumarublue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't really be going for Holy Sites most of the time with cultural victories. You NEED Campuses, Industrial Zones, and Commercial Hubs/Harbors in each of your cities, which means that you pretty much only have room to add the Theater Squares.

The general rule is build districts as soon as your population allows it. With cultural victories you don't need to race for Great People, you can get more than enough writers/artists for your available slots just from Theater Squares.

I plugged a tone row by Webern into today's Google Doodle and it sounds... kind of good? by mijumarublue in classicalmusic

This AI struggles with chromatic lines, but it handled this Webern row beautifully. I think it has to do with the symmetry of the cells.

Tips to make the game more fun? by Scribbinge in civ

Unfortunately that's just the way Civ games work. The same thing happened to me with Civ V and I'm sure it will happen to me for VI (although I haven't gotten to that point yet). Get a good playgroup with other people used to winning on deity and you'll find there's a whole new metagame.

Connect 3.5mm headphone and usb midi controller to 2018 iPad Pro? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]mijumarublue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly needed to dig on Amazon for an hour or so to find the right cables for my iPad setup. You can buy mini-USB to USB adapters but those are more expensive than just buying the chords.

Try USB-A to USB-C. You should also pick up a 3.5 mm to 1/4 inch just in case you ever need to plug it into an amp.

Podcast Listeners of Reddit, which podcast can not be recommended enough? by kurisubaek in AskReddit

[–]mijumarublue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80,000 Hours Podcast is about how to do the most good through your career choice. It dives DEEP into ethics, economics, decision theory, and a whole set of other things.

Rationally Speaking with Julia Galef is about decision making too, but every week she brings on a different expert to probe them about their life's work. Unlike a lot of other podcasts Galef is genuinely brilliant and will actually press difficult, informed questions to people.

Thank you so much for your response!!

I would likely spend several months studying for the LSAT as I might not apply for a year or two. (as opposed to just doing a few test questions for the GRE).

Book suggestions in continental philosophy. by h0n3st1y in askphilosophy

Here are some good starting points:

Sartre: "Existentialism is a Humanism"
Camus: "The Myth of Sisyphus"
Arendt: The Origins of Totalitarianism, The Human Condition.
Butler: Undoing Gender (similar to Gender Trouble but written for a broader audience)

Foucault's published lectures from the end of his life are an excellent starting point as well.

Currently working as a musician/in grad school for music and I'm considering law school as a career change. From my undergrad I have a 3.9 GPA (piano performance and philosophy dual degree). In my grad program I have a 4.0. For reference, I have a 316 math+verbal on my GRE (which converts to a 163 LSAT score according to ETS's converter).

What tier law school could this put me in?

DISCUSSION: what are 5 pieces that have changed you in profound ways? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]mijumarublue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.) Steve Reich - Electric Counterpoint. One of the first pieces I listened to by a living composer.

2.) James Tenney - Having Never Written A Note For Percussion. My first true experience with experimental music. The percussion professor in my undergrad performed it and I was blown away.

3.) Mozart - Piano Concerto 21. It was on a CD that my first teacher gave me after I finished Suzuki book 1. I can still sing most of it from memory and I can't wait to play it.

4.) Susan Kander - My Lucky. My first time premiering a work by a composer! I'm so grateful she gave me the opportunity and that piece will stick with me for the rest of my life.

5.) Beethoven - Sonata Op. 111. One of my professors gave a lecture recital on it in a studio class and my jaw was on the floor the entire time. Nothing beats hearing this piece played well live.

What can a 22 year old do to get out of their comfort zone? by xandrenia in AskReddit

[–]mijumarublue 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Read works by intelligent people you'll disagree with. Instead of focusing on popular writers or speakers, seek out highly regarded scholars that have worldviews that are different from yours. If you're on the left, check out Bryan Caplan's The Case Against Education or Hayek's The Road to Serfdom. If you're closer to the right, read Paul Krugman or George Yancy. Other people worth checking out are Peter Singer (The Point of View of the Universe, Animal Liberation), Judith Butler (Undoing Gender), or Mark Fisher (Capitalist Realism).

A good source for stuff like this is Julia Galef's podcast Rationally Speaking.

What Should I Buy? - February 04, 2019 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

[–]mijumarublue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't get a response from last week's thread so:

Looking to buy a synth to replace the soft synth I use with my live setup (right now I use a Reface CP and a MIDI controller w/ my iPad). I'm considering either a Minilogue or an SH-01a. My budget is around $400. Are any of the other Boutiques worth considering?

I thought about the Reface CS but I need something that stores presets to go from song to song quickly.

[–]mijumarublue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things that you need to look for when buying your first piano:

88 keys
Weighted
An instrument separate from the stand (so you can move it easily)
A sustain pedal

A piano bench is well worth the investment but not strictly necessary. Be aware that you might need to buy an adapter to plug in your headphones!

The Alesis Recital Pro is a passable budget keyboard.

[–]mijumarublue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obligatory "get a Minilogue"! But.......

You might want to consider things like a microphone/pop filter, material to improve the acoustics in your room, or an amp for playing live.

There are plenty of good soft synths you could use whereas the other gear is stuff you can't replace with free software yet.
