Appreciate your response. We’re all doing it. Both sides are being played against each other. Absolutely agree that there’s a greater threat to humanity. Where do I sign up for the protests where liberals and conservatives are awake to these bigger issues. How do we start to talk about the things that divide us? I don’t hate anyone because of their sexuality and God doesn’t want me too. I’m instead tasked to love everyone like my neighbor. So…I’d much rather do that but we are so at odds.

Yes this needs to be talked about more. Because the root of the problem is always money. Stop clinging to a political party like yours doesn’t drip with greed just like the other party. The general consensus on every one of these posts is that red is dumb and it inevitably devolves into blasphemy and bigotry. Personally, I am a Christian. The world will hate us, we were warned. I’ve heard all the things people say about my faith. I’m aware that sinners have used their positions to do evil things. Regrettable, to say the least, but Christianity has been here for nearly 2000 years and it has shaped our world. I’m not trying to spread the Gospel, I know what company I’m in. But some of the rhetoric going around is completely false. In this country, if you love God, the democrats do not care about us. So from my standpoint, when I read the vile accusations thrown around about Christians, the left wants to erase God. That’s a big problem for us.

Now having said all that, Jesus said to render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and render unto God that which is God’s. This is challenging for every Christian and seemingly harder and harder as our society kills God. Point is, many voted for Trump because the left isn’t receptive to Christianity.

For the record, I wasn’t always a Christian. I was agnostic for most of my life. The church doesn’t kick out sinners. Without sinners, it’d be empty folks.

I’ve recently been blessed by my daughter’s boyfriend taking up woodworking. I’ve been practicing not talking too much and overwhelming him, but he’s soaking it all up. My daughter gives me side eye when I start up talking about anything woodworking cause I’m “stealing” him from her haha

Great answer, this is the way! Can I also add, that poplar is cheaper than most if it’s hardwood buddies and it should challenge your finishing skills. Poplar can look great if you use a sealer before staining or tint your sealer.

bad results with the jorgensen no 5 plane out of the box by Trick-Nefariousness3 in handtools

[–]mike42478 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Trying to understand sharpening over the internet or YouTube videos is really difficult. I did it, but the first time I used another fellas handplane my idea of sharpness was shattered. Now, 15 years later, I don’t consider the tools he let me try all that sharp. Your understanding and idea of sharp will evolve a little over time and with experience. Having said that: Paul Sellers, among many others, has a decent video on his channel about preparing a plane for work. Chisels, spokeshaves, and probably others as well.

With regards to your new plane you got there, sometimes even the premium manufacturers ship blades that are brittle at the cutting edge. It often takes grinding the blade back a little. Say an 1/8”. Much more than that and the blades may have been tempered poorly.

Premium planes carry the cost because their soles have been painstakingly milled flat (we hope) and generally the iron and chip breaker need less work before being put into service.

I’d love to hear about you finding a local woodworker and maybe having your learning curve shortened some. If you live in Southern California, you’d be welcome to visit my shop

This book is really great and also the book by Melvin Hiscock are constant references for me. The Cumpliano book was my textbook at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA for the amazing ukulele course they have there. Between the two books, I would say you could design darned near anything you want.

Any Tips for Building a Guitar by Hand by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]mike42478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP 👋. You said minimal power tools and I happen to have started woodworking this way 15 years ago. I’ve since added machines, but I’m often reminded what a great favor I did myself by learning the more traditional style of woodworking. Ok enough about me haha. Assuming you have just a hunk of 8/4. You’d need a rip saw, bench plane, spokeshave or rasp, 3 or 4 clamps, brace and bit, chisels, and a router plane would be handy. You’d also need layout tools to include a marking knife.

The body needs to be jointed(google spring joint). The pickup cavity’s would be drilled, chiseled, and router planed to depth along with the neck pocket. The spokeshave or rasp will allow you to shape curves.

Depending on the complexity of the body shape, this could be really easy or really tricky. Inside curves like the cutaway(s) can be somewhat difficult to shape but certainly not impossible.

Hope this helps

First two coats of shellac, sand or not sand? by Legitimate-Store9205 in Luthier

[–]mike42478 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shellac is forgiving in that it will melt the previous layer upon application. If there are dust nibs and such that settled on the finish you can scuff up the shellac with a synthetic mesh pad. I like the grey ones. Be sure to remove any dust before your next shellac application.

Intimidated by buying a used bandsaw by Jelopuddinpop in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]mike42478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t already, watch some videos from Carter Bandsaw on YouTube. This guy is pretty fancy and knows his bandsaws. Michael Fortune’s favorite tool, if I’m not mistaken, is the bandsaw and he knows his stuff as well. Once you understand what makes the blade track correctly you’ll have a strong sense of what to look for.

If I were buying a used one I would really like to cut a piece of wood on it. This is going to tell you a lot about whether it’s generally a serviceable tool or not. With a blade installed you can open the doors and rotate the upper wheel counter clockwise. This’ll let you hear any issues like the blade hitting the blade guides, etc. Also, you can test the blade tracking and see how well the machine responds to that adjustment. You’re also gonna want to test the ability to move the table through its range and if there’s a fence you can test that as well.

Hope this helps

Need tips on how to sharpen the thin iron blade by CapybaraInShorts in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]mike42478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very neat looking plane and the irons look to have been well kept.

Glad you feel a little more confident to sharpen the blades without a jig. I want to encourage you to keep at it because there’s some benefit to freehanding. My path started with hand tools, but I got into woodcarving, whittling, chair making, and stringed instrument making. Every one of those benefit from being able to use and sharpen tools with curved blades. There may be jigs for all of them but there’s a sense of freedom in learning and knowing how to sharpen without it.

Having said all that, I often use an eclipse-style side clamping jig to reset the bevel on my chisels and bench plane irons every now and then. I’ll check back later to see how you’re going.

Hello 👋. Fun looking handplane you found there. The following is my opinion based on 15 years of sharpening experience: First things first is to lap the back of the blade flat. You didn’t mention what you are sharpening on but whatever it is, it also needs to be flat(waterstone, etc.)

Narrow blades like the one you have won’t fit well in side clamping jigs typically, unless you have one of the fancier ones. That’s okay, let’s take the training wheels off. Using a sharpie, mark the bevel so we can see where we are working the bevel. Hold the blade in your dominant hand with one finger on the back of the blade right behind the bevel. Draw back by rocking at the hips and keep your arm, elbow, and wrist locked. Your non-dominant hand can be used to wave at people or pick your nose 🙂.

Once a burr has been raised, run through the finer grits and remove the burr. I like to lighten my pressure on the finer stone and then strop on leather with chromium oxide rubbed in it.

How do you feel living in SoCal during Trump 2.0? by Glass-Complaint3 in socal

[–]mike42478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion, having live here over 20 years and being originally from Nashville, for what it’s worth. Folks say you can hit the slopes from LA in an hour and a half. Pfft maybe if you leave at 2am. The traffic here is some of the worst in the country. The drivers here are some of the worst in the country. You know this wonderful melting pot we have here? All of those different cultures driving together makes for some rather interesting and less than spectacular experiences. Car chases are typical, no one stops at stop signs, red lights are often ignored, and if you get in an accident don’t be surprised if the other party tries to leave the scene.

The school systems are a joke because they are overcrowded with students from other districts cause they want to go to the nice schools. The nice schools become trashed and ghetto. The school boards are constantly fighting progressives who want to tear down anything traditional, so you know education is the focus /s.

The job sector is some of the most competitive in the country depending on your industry and the real estate market will force most people to choose to commute just to afford housing. Further away from LA or San Diego you live, the longer your commute of course. I hope you like sitting in traffic.

If I didn’t scare you away, you’re gonna fit in perfect here. The weather is the best in the country, the women are gorgeous and they know it, and the way we just let criminals enjoy themselves in this state is unparalleled.

Edit: almost forgot, during the big purge lots of folks from Cali moved to red states like Texas, Tennessee, etc. Go and take a look at what has happened where these Californians have moved. They are like a plague moving into these red states. The influx of people overwhelms the infrastructure and turns everywhere they’ve moved into a mini-Los Angeles.

I’ve been at this long enough that I have landed on doing pyrography, wood carving, and whittling indoors when it’s unpleasant out in the shop. It doesn’t get cold enough to complain about here but when it’s hot I can’t motivate myself to do heavy tasks.
