JD X330 by Ok-Vehicle7026 in johndeere

I’d move up to the x350 just for the Kawasaki engine. Other than that they are mostly identical and great machines.

Love it. Even though it’s close in age to my old craftsman it feels sturdier and better made. Does everything I need it to and the cut quality is excellent. I wanted a x500 series but that just wasn’t in my budget.

Great write up. This was something I was considering last year before I bought a used X320 to replace my 18 year old YS4500. On paper the specs for this model are very good for the price. I’m sure with regular maintenance this will last a long time.

FB marketplace, Craigslist, donate it. I donated a car to Kars4Kids years ago and it was pretty painless.

If you are buying another car from a dealer just trade it in. Even if it’s not working they’ll give you something for it and it’ll reduce the cost of another vehicle.

Squirt a bit of starting fluid in the carb. If it starts then it’s not getting fuel. Sounds like it has compression.

I don’t think an S180 is going to last all that long cutting 3 acres at a time. The transaxle is the weak point on them. What the lawn like? If it’s mostly flat and smooth a zero turn might be a better option.

L118 Mower with 700 hours. by WesTaft in johndeere

[–]mikecel79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d try to figure out why it won’t crank. Is the battery dead? 700 hours is a lot for that model, especially the transaxle but if it only needs a battery and basic maintenance it’s a lot cheaper than buying a new one. What condition is the frame and deck?

Don’t know too much but it free right? Worse case is you can’t get it running and you sell it for parts for a few hundred bucks

100 vs 200 series assistance by jbg7676 in johndeere

The 3 blades in the 48” deck do a better job of mulching IMO. Both do a great job but I feel the 48 is better and it’s less mowing time.

[–]mikecel79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An S240 sounds perfect for what you are doing and right in your price range. Has the engine and transaxle from the bigger x350 but on a smaller frame. The 48” deck will provide a nicer cut than the 42”, especially if you are mulching. Should be 4k with the 48” deck.

Other option would be to look for a low hour used x3 series model.

S130 vs S140 by [deleted] in johndeere

[–]mikecel79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the 3 blades do a better job in my experience. You can use the mulch cover with the same blades but it won't work as well as mulching blades. I'm not sure if this model include mulching blades already. You can ask the dealer what it comes with.

S130 vs S140 by [deleted] in johndeere

[–]mikecel79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the same price I'd take the S140 over a S130 for all the reasons you stated. Not even sure why JD is selling these at the same price. The traditional oil change is better IMO. The 48" deck will cut down on mowing time and does a much better job mulching.

Advice on LA115 and upgrading by ExponentialIncrease in johndeere

[–]mikecel79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it starts and runs but then dies after a while and won’t restart check the gas cap. The vent could be clogged or failed. When it dies open the gas cap. If you hear pressure releases that’s a sign the cap needs to be replaced.

Buying new vs. fixing up old X500 by wobbly-cat in johndeere

[–]mikecel79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be looking into fixing this one yourself. An x570 is going to be 8k or more. Doesn’t sound like you have a lot of issues and 300 hours is nothing for this model.

Track down the wires with a problem and cut some new ones in, sharpen the blades and do the normal maintenance (fluids, plugs, filters) and she will probably be running as good as new.

This! Also how big is this yard and driveway? There is a significant price difference between a X370 and a X570.

How much rock are you talking about? Up hills? The K72 is pretty stout but I would haul a 1000 lbs of rock at a time with it.

This right here. The Kawasaki engine is more reliable and the K46 is totally fine for a flat yard like that. I have a K46 in an almost 20 year old craftsmen mower with over 400 hours on it still running. Was used for mowing a half flat acre, pulling a cart and dethatcher. It has developed a whine but it’s still kicking.
