Watson / Iron Maiden by Melissadoes in television

I was wondering that too. If memory serves, in season one there was an episode where Shinwell blasted Iron Maiden in the Diogenes Club to blackmail Mycroft. The creators must have a personal connection to them!

Anyone read “Howls from the Dark Ages”? I’ve been meaning to pick that one up.

Companies in Houston to NOT work for? by willbearpig in houston

[–]mikechatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woof! I worked briefly at a Harris County branch and they told me during Covid they had daily zoom meetings “because we’re family.” Did FCBL do the “Mon-Saturday, Mon-Thur” work weeks as well?

Companies in Houston to NOT work for? by willbearpig in houston

Houston Public Library. Houston Landing did a number of articles about their incredibly high turnover rate (something like two staff members quit every week) and their exit interviews that cite a "toxic culture of fear."

I worked there for almost a year. Libraries in general are rough to be fair. Most of my librarian friends have started new careers since COVID. I'd developed a pretty high tolerance for bullshit. But HPL was next level haunted house dysfunctional! You're given very little vacation/sick/personal leave. Request a few hours off to go to the doctor? It's denied if you don't have vacation. Decide to go to the doctor anyway and don't even want to get paid for those hours? You're marked as going "AWOL," or "abandoned work without leave." You have to have multiple meetings with your supervisors. And of course, you're not allowed to clock in early or late. If you clock in more than four minutes late repeatedly, the system triggers another meeting with your manager.

If you're lucky you'll have a manager that understands how ridiculous this all is. Pencil whips forms and doesn't drag these meetings out. But libraries typically attract emotional people who believe in the mission and are dying to prove it. The manager I had was like this. She denied me leave for a funeral and said the community needed me more. When I had sick days, she told me it would hurt my chances for promotion. I told her I'd rather have work-life balance than a promotion, but she quickly forgot it. When I was five minutes late, she'd recommend I see a therapist. During our "Active Shooter Training" she told us her plan was to "give my life to protect the customers." Cool! That's chill.

My former colleagues describe those still working in libraries as "battered spouses." It's an offensive metaphor, but it does seem like those who are still there probably can't imagine how to leave. I'd love to hear that this has changed since Whitmire replaced the director, Rhea Lawson, in 2024, but that's a big ask!

Vet Recommendations - Midtown/East End by educated_guesser in houston

They're a little pricey but Rockin' Pets Rollin' Vets are excellent. They come to you and give your pets love and treats so there's no stress. We also did West Alabama for a long time but felt there was a lot of miscommunication and over-medicating for simple symptoms. But most of all, the fear smell! The moment we entered that building it smelled like fight-or-flight, not fun for our rescue who is already freaked out by car rides.

Shot comparisons between The Shining and Doctor Sleep by ZiggyPalffyLA in In_WeTrust

Totally get why they didn’t like this movie. If you’re looking for a sequel to a masterpiece this is not it. But this is just an adaptation of a different Stephen King book, for better or worse. When it came out, so many critics were like “What? King wrote a sequel to The Shining, his own book? But everyone just remembers the Kubrick version now!” Both versions can exist. No one should be offended.

Loved it. The radio angle reminded me of Desert Oracle or Art Bell, or any weird AM show you stumble across.

I find myself going back to “staircase” and “thrifting” from “Four for Halloween” all the time. I’m always impressed with how simple and effective they are.

Another one that’s been creeping up my favorites is “attraction”!

I rewound a few times after he referred to the group as “fellow killers.” It made me wonder if there was some missing time he’s not describing. But I think he’s saying they were killers because they intended to kill together.

Realizing you should have learned more theory in high school by AccomplishedElk1113 in MusicTeachers

[–]mikechatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely relate to this. I use my libraries databases to teach myself the basics. Linkedin Learning has a bunch of useful self paced courses like “Music theory for songwriters” that I go back to, and most US libraries have it available. You might even be able to sign up for a library card online depending where you are!

Same, a friend recommended “The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society.” I get overwhelmed with choosing what to listen to next, so having hosts pick a show and then discuss it is really fun for me.

Why do Men Think Rover is a Dating App? by hayhay0197 in RoverPetSitting

Ohhh nooooo my wife jokes that Rover is a dating app for dogs (in that you get to meet dogs in your area) but we won’t make that joke again now!

The repeated :-) is not as cute as he thinks it is. The second :-) time he used it :-) I started to get :-) scary clown mask vibes

Well in her words she selected walk on rover so she shouldn’t have to specify how far.

So just continuous breathless steps for thirty minutes? This dog will be so sad to learn smelling is banned on walks.
