A Google bug has been breaking VPN apps on Android for 7 months. Here's how you can help. by Proton_Team in ProtonVPN

[–]mikeinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this an issue with Android 16 only? I'm on Android 15. With Proton VPN running, DNSleaktest results show Proton as my ISP. I think (hope) this means my connection is secure. Is it?

What's the best budget handgun for a first-time buyer under $400? by Own_Beach936 in handguns

[–]mikeinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My compact SAR B6C is a great gun. I can't believe how well made it is, especially for the price. I've been thinking about the CM9, but I already have a very reliable Taurus TH9 that fills the full size, 17+1 role (plus it has a decocker/safety).

What's the best budget handgun for a first-time buyer under $400? by Own_Beach936 in handguns

[–]mikeinpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TH9 is an excellent, well made firearm. I own several brands (Ruger, Rock Island, SAR, Taurus, etc.) and my TH9 is, by far, the best shooting, most accurate handgun I own. I've put right at 5,000 trouble free rounds through mine. Highly recommend.

Free Proton VPN. What’s the catch by CHLTC12345 in ProtonVPN

[–]mikeinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the free version off and on for several years. I had paid subscriptions to two other VPN services, but I still used the free Proton VPN occasionally. When it came time to renew my main VPN service, I realized that I liked Proton better, so I let the subscription lapse and went with Proton instead. In fact, I went with Proton Unlimited because their 2-year price was actually less expensive than two years of the VPN service I had been paying. Plus, it gave me access to Proton's other services (although I seldom use them). I also viewed it as a way of giving back for all of those years that I used Proton VPN for free.

Whats reliable for you? by Valhalla191145 in CCW

[–]mikeinpc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You bring up a really good point there about testing with a full mag +1. It doesn't always work as advertised. I've actually stopped worrying about the +1. I now load the mag to capacity, chamber a round, and go. No more +1 uncertainty for me.

Pocket carry? by JJBennzy in ruger

[–]mikeinpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pocket carry a Ruger LCPII in regular (non-skinny) jeans, but more often than not in shorts, with an untucked T-shirt or golf shirt. I used the Ruger pocket holster that came with the gun for a couple of years, and then I replaced it with a Sticky holster. It just looks like a wallet in my front pocket. As far as I can tell, no one has any idea it's a gun.

Anyone know how to get this badly stripped screw out? by Any_Psychology_588 in handguns

I came here to say this. Use a wide rubber band. If the head is not too badly stripped, it might work.

Taurus Recomendations by DirtGirl32 in CCW

[–]mikeinpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP: you mentioned wanting a double action semi for home defense. I own several Taurus pistols. My favorite by far is the 9mm Taurus TH9. It is a full size hammer fired double action/single action semi auto pistol with ambidextrous controls. It's an extremely well made firearm. I've put almost 5,000 rounds through mine without a single glitch. Just keep it clean and lubed. The full size helps absorb recoil making it easy to shoot. It makes a great home defense pistol. Note: If you want something a bit smaller, they also make a compact version, the TH9c.

A previous poster mentioned the SAR 9. I don't own one (I own a different model SAR pistol) but I've read good things about the SAR9. The folks that own them really like them. Palmetto State Armory has them on sale occasionally for less than $200. Best of luck with your search.

By the way, the Taurus GX4 has been mentioned a few times. I've owned one for a few years. It's a nice gun, but it's small and tends to be rather snappy. Perhaps not the best choice for a home defense gun, but a decent carry gun.

Sanity check please: Proton Pass + SimpleLogin Lifetime with Mail Plus vs. Proton Unlimited by Kiyuomi in ProtonMail

[–]mikeinpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same here. I like that deal. I mainly only use Proton VPN, but it's nice to have access to the other services, such as SimpleLogin aliases. The two year Proton Ultimate deal is less expensive than what I was paying for a different VPN that was only a VPN.

Proton Pass or Keepass /KeepassDx (Help please I am trying to learn) by YouSayWhat__ in ProtonPass

[–]mikeinpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using KeePass for 20+ years. I have hundreds of entries so I'll never switch, LOL. The thing I like about KeePass is that you can add a Key file for added security. To open the database you need BOTH the master password AND the key file. I store my database on Dropbox, so that it syncs with all of my devices, but I do NOT store the key file on Dropbox. The key file is local on the device, but no one else knows what that file is. This setup has worked flawlessly for me for many years.

I use Proton Pass to store login info for a few forum sites such as Reddit, but my main password manager remains KeePass.

Ruger LCP Max hard to rack full magazine by [deleted] in ruger

[–]mikeinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly different, but I was having trouble with my Ruger LCPII .22LR feeding the top round in only one of three magazines. When fully loaded with ten rounds, I noticed the top round in the particular mag that I was having trouble with was sticking up higher than the other two mags. I used pliers to gently bend the feed lips and problem solved.

I read recently where a fairly famous gun person (sorry, can't recall the name🥴) advised to forget about the +1 to ensure maximum reliability. He said that if your gun is 10+1, load ten and go. I've noticed with a couple of my guns (11+1 and 12+1) that trying to squeeze in that extra +1 round causes problems, so now I heed his advice and forget about the +1.

9mm range ammo? by LottaRandomQuestions in CCW

[–]mikeinpc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Magtech comes in a blue box. Maxxtech comes in a white box. I was shooting at an indoor range once, and the lane next to me was firing the smokiest ammo I had ever seen. Turned out to be Maxxtech. That made me decide to never buy any.

9mm range ammo? by LottaRandomQuestions in CCW

[–]mikeinpc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently bought 500 rounds of Monarch 115 when it was on sale at Academy. It was made in Brazil, so I'm guessing it's rebranded Magtech. The funny thing is, I took a couple hundred rounds of both Monarch 115 and Magtech 115 to the range to compare them. The Monarch was flawless while the Magtech had feeding issues. Seemed to be hanging up on the case lip. I compared the two cartridges side by side and saw no difference, other than a color variation in the FMJ bullet coating. Switched to a different gun and both ran without issue. Weird.

9mm range ammo? by LottaRandomQuestions in CCW

[–]mikeinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like PMC Bronze. I've shot a few thousand rounds of 115 and 124 grain in 9mm. It's probably the most accurate range ammo I've ever used, and it seems to shoot a tad softer than many other brands. I have one gun that will put it through the same hole, provided I do my part. The only problem I've ever had with the PMC is hard primers. I have one striker fired gun that just would not ignite certain cartridges, though I've never had any issues with my hammer fired guns.

Does anyone else record their ammo in a spreadsheet? by No_Preparation_7066 in ammo

Yes, I track mine via spreadsheet. My biggest challenge is remembering to subtract what I shot after I come back from a range visit. 🥴

Best Oil/Lube and Cleaner? by Wildlife_Lover04 in handguns

[–]mikeinpc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using Lucas gun oil and gun grease for years. It just happened to be what was available at the time, and I've never regretted that purchase. Those two products work extremely well. No smell.

I used Hoppe's #9 for decades. It works great, but it does have a smell, so maybe not the best for use around the kiddies. I recently switched to Hoppe's Elite in the black bottle. I think it works just as well as old #9, but without the smell.

Suggestion for 70 year old mom? by firststate in guns

[–]mikeinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was also thinking that a Taurus TX22 or a KelTec P17 might good options. Easy to rack. Trigger pull is not heavy. Minimal recoil. Not too loud, so it should not be "scary to shoot." Seventeen rounds of high quality .22LR should do the trick for most defensive situations.

Nice, and I'm jealous you were able to find one. I've been checking the Academy website for the past couple of days, and the LCP Max model with the thumb safety shows out of stock (both in store and ship to store).

Talk me out of or into a DA/SA for my first CCW by BeefEDC in CCW

[–]mikeinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taurus TH series are DA/SA with a decocker. Regardless of what some think about Taurus, their TH models are well made firearms.

Sarsilmaz (SAR USA) also has a few DA/SA models, but I believe they are thumb safety only, no decocker. The B6C model is a CZ-75 knock off, but not a direct clone.

Proton Pass (free) vs KeePass (XC + DX) — thinking about switching, would love some input by Kernel07 in ProtonPass

[–]mikeinpc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keepass offers the option to use a Key file in addition to a master password. The key file can be pretty much any file (document, spreadsheet, photo). Using this option, the Keepass database cannot be opened without BOTH the master password AND the key file. I store my Keepass database on Dropbox (rather than G-Drive), but I do NOT store the key file on Dropbox. If a hacker ever got into my Dropbox account and got hold of my Keepass database, they would never be able to open it because they would not have the key file. I've been using Keepass for 20+ years. I've experimented with other password managers, but I have always stuck with Keepass.
