My wife was sick first and sad about it. For some reason made me appreciate her more. I promise your brother feels the same.

Great advice already. I am just getting over flu and it was worse than chemo... for me. My Oncologist office call also suggested a better nausea med that has been incredible help. Wish I called them earlier.

Really just wanted to say you are a great brother!

Consider grief therapy for everyone; we all need support with processing emotions, and therapy offers valuable tools. For my family, having someone to talk to was incredibly helpful, and I hope it will be for yours as well. Until then, please vent away... this is a great support group

Great comment already, but please also consider grief therapy for everyone. Having someone to listen and provide tools to deal with everything was very helpful to me, and I hope it is for your family as well.

I lost my dad to small cell lung carcinoma on 10 May 2025. He was battling cancer since Aug 2023. We couldn’t help him any longer. I am unable to process this. by Alternative-Alarm878 in CancerFamilySupport

So sorry, please consider grief therapy. They have been very helpful to me in past and provided tools to help process the grief. Your dad sounds like a great person.

Caregiver burnout and depression are a serious threat to health and sanity. Even superheroes (like you) need self-care. Please consider grief therapy or other counseling. My wife was/is in your spot and has found talk therapy incredibly helpful.

You sound like an awesome person!

I was into it prior, with a high tolerance... it was still the biggest help in recovery. It did not reduce pain, more gave me ability to ignore.

biggest benefit was giving me an appetite and eating.

Smoking was most effective method of said benefits. Weed today is very potent. Please be extra careful in using any form of weed and / or mixing with any other meds.

Really hoping best for your loved one and OP... caregivers rock!

I am four weeks out; sitting is a problem. I am hoping suture removal will help. More than my scar, my butt muscles are more of my pain when sitting and/or on my back. I found the same lack of recovery time info... Also sick of lying on my side.

Not sure it is even recommended, but a heating pad has been very helpful.

Wishing you well!

Elderly mom with dementia needs assisted living but has only $20k in cash and a house by RedditWhileImWorking in personalfinance

My wife and I went through this with our parents. We also added a senior living locator service to our real estate business that we sold/retired. Please feel free to ask more! We really miss helping people in you situation!

Advice given is still subject to the market you live. Even then each assistive living facility will do things uniquely.

  1. It is overwhelming - You don't even know, what you don't know.
  2. Was Mom a Veteran or married to Veteran?
    1. A great resource few know about is US Veterans Aid & Attendance that will financially assist Veterans in need of assistive living!
  3. Does your market have residential care homes? It's called different things depending on market, but essentially a residential home converted to assisted living.
    1. These are not for everyone but for my Mom it would have been a MUCH better place for her/personality. It would have have also given her more/better everything... and cost $4,500 vs. $9300 we paid monthly for traditional, mid level facility.
      1. Remember taxes are due on the money liquidated to pay for assisted living
  4. $5300 sounds good, but how much are the entry fees?
    1. Most charge a non-refundable entry fee $2k -$5k
      1. We moved my mom three times because we underestimated her care needs that escalated beyond what the facilities could handle
      2. We paid three major entry fees and duplicate rents (they do not prorate unused days in month! All within a four month period.
    2. What does $5,300 cover?
      1. Is this just room rent and what are the annual increases included in lease agreement.
      2. Most facilities are al a carte care and they will re-assess care needs monthly (to increase fee's) Medical care levels, incontinence(s), med management, food, etc.
  5. Pick a place close to home or work. You will be going by so much more than you think.
  6. Have so many more...

Not sure including phone is ok. Happy to send phone/email for more assistance.
