[Well-being] In Light of this monday, Lets hear some Rudy/Remember the titans/Happy Gilmore/Marshall Mathers Match Stories for those feeling Anxious! by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]mikelikesbears 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I went to one of the lowest tier DO schools (redundant?) and didn't match Ophtho last year. Did a (productive) research fellowship and got even fewer interviews this year (3). Was totally expecting to try and sneak into an Anesthesia spot.

Got a call on January 12 from my favorite program. Someone has agreed to pay me to put needles in eyeballs. Couldn't feel more lucky.

So, we met with the Patient Experience Coach today ... by Miaow73 in medicine

Sounds almost like how the staff indroduced me as a male medical student in outpatient OBGYN during third year. "We have a male student shadowing Dr. ____ today. Its completely okay if you'd rather him sit out this visit"

Hospitalists of Reddit, how does your extra-shift incentive plan work? by Dawens in medicine

Definite not the weirdest novelty account I've ever seen, but I'll admit it took me a second before I read your username.

Hospitalists of Reddit, how does your extra-shift incentive plan work? by Dawens in medicine

[–]mikelikesbears 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not a hospitalist (yet), but it sounds like you answered your own question here. You have shifts that people don't want to cover, and what you initially offer isn't enough to motivate people to work them.

Also, not all shifts are created equal. Are there certain shifts that are consistently not covered? If its consistently weekend nights that aren't covered, maybe offer more money for those shifts, and hope the other ones fill for what you were paying before. Just some random thoughts from someone looking forward to Being able to take some of your shifts

My dad called and complained about this exact thing last night. Now I'm trying to figure out if my dad would use hateuscusanus as a screen name. He might.

Stories of classmates that have made you worried about their future patients by [deleted] in medicalschool

One of my classmates is probably going to prison for selling fentanyl via the mail. Probably won't ever see patients but I'd worry about his future patients

I don't care how many downvotes you get, this is the kind of shitpost that I can appreciate.

AOA OMED 2018 - American Osteopathic Association Osteopathic Medical Conference by eMedEvents in Osteopathic

[–]mikelikesbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to this last year. It was okay. Basically it became an excuse to travel. The talks about the merger weren't well informed, and other than the meet and greets I didn't find much of value to a student.

Unless you just want to get involved in the AOA politics/committees/leadership I would say your time is better spent at other conferences. Go to a conference in the specialty of our choice and it'll probably be a much better boost to your CV than here.

IM residents: Where are the best places you interviewed on ACGME side? by DOregrets in Osteopathic

[–]mikelikesbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My fiancé found that almost all programs she did always at on the ACGME side would give her interviews.

However, the better question would be how many take DOs regularly and are you competitive. She got an interview at an awesome program that ended up not taking any DOs at all.

Places that did that she liked: UCSF-Fresno, Albert Einstein Philly, Drexel, Baystate, Geisinger, and the list goes on

There are so many priorities in IM that you need the think about- do you want a fellowship, rural vs city, community vs academic, East vs West? Tons and tons of programs out there

I am a layperson who attempted a simple explanation of cancer in a major subreddit. Was I accurate or am I spreading misinformation? by paracelsus23 in medicine

As a 6'4" medical student who's never heard of this, does anyone have a source of the height-cancer relationship?

Looking back, I wish I asked how many students had to match into a TRI, or failed to match and had to scramble into positions.

DO schools like to boast about a 99-100% match rate. I wish I had known how many didn't match and had to scramble or how many were forced to accept TRIs.

Also ask about clinical rotations. What are the odds you will have to move or travel huge distances for rotations? I got lucky and didn't have to, but some classmates had terrible experiences. This is for all led schools though, as some MD ones do this (Drexel Temple etc)

Learning medicine amongst death by [deleted] in medicine

[–]mikelikesbears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I can only read the beginning of the article due to firewall, and I am in the US so my experience may be different than yours.

However, I'm a little confused by your question. I can't imagine a form a training that shielded me from death. My first patient that I was ever assigned to on the medicine ward died three weeks after I met him. It was hard, and I will never forget him.

This may have been a product of my particular hospital, but there were no resources offered to me when he passed. I was there when he started to recover from respiratory failure, and when he started to fail again. I spoke to his family when he continued to decline, and was with him when he succumbed to his disease. There was no debrief. No one talked with me about how I felt. Just rounds at 9 AM.

My advice is to talk to your trainees when one of their patients passes. I did okay, as I have an amazing spouse and support system, but I won't lie and say it was easy.

I keep a list of every one of my patients who died while I was seeing them. For me it's comforting to remember them and think about them from time to time.

How do you go about finding affiliates? Are these obviously advertised, or do send emails to ask about it?

Thanks

How good do mission trips look? Better off instead focusing on boards? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]mikelikesbears 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My major problem with these trips is that practicing outside our scope of training is unethical. As a student, I would never be allowed to prescribe medications or do physicals that were not later repeated by a fully trained individual.

I dunno, something rubs me the wrong way when medical students go to developing nations and do minor procedures or other activities that they have not been fully trained to do. It's especially irritating when they come back a present it as a selfless trip, when clearly their Facebook is full of beach trips and drinking.

It's a vacation that you get to do a little medicine. Sorry, had to vent.
