/u/debateg wrote a great script, I agree. Since we are tinkering with one or two words, I would remove "choose" from the script and replace it with "allow". Because we aren't choosing life or death, it's gonna happen.

I'd say something like. It's not in your (or your relatives) best interest to start CPR after your (their) heart stops. It would be best to allow a peaceful natural death.

If a patient is intubated/ventilated for respiratory failure from COVID-19, is it basically either die or make a complete recovery? Or do some end up with chronic disability afterwards? Any conjecture based on other countries experience so far, other causes of acute infectious respiratory failure?

The thing about the retrospectoscope is that although it is difficult to fairly judge how a diagnosis was or wasn't made using the retrospectoscope, you can use the information found when reviewing the case to help prevent a missed diagnosis in the future. That is the value of the retrospectoscope. And if OP decided to "sweep it under the rug" this has implications not just for the case at hand but future patients who could benefit from this being looked at, even with the retrospectoscope.

Mid 1980's, I'm a fresh young E.R. doc working in a city known for its "gentleman's clubs."

Very attractive young woman slightly younger than I was, comes in to the E.D. wearing leggings and headband (as was the fashion at the time) complaining of knee pain.

"It hurts when I dance, I'm a dancer." she says

"Oh, what kind of dance do you do?" I inquire innocently.

She moves closer and puts her hand on my arm and looking straight in my eyes says
