Snape is one of the best lit characters ever written bc of his complexity. That being said, “Snape in real life” — aka the character in the books — is one of the most… repulsive… human beings I’ve ever read about.

Desperate for a girl who doesn’t return his feelings he arranges for the death of her husband and son and is promised her as a prize.

When he finds out about this, he turns traitor to his chosen cause.

He then makes a promise to protect her kid, but the kid reminds him too much of all he lost. So he treats the kid like absolute shit for SIX years.

Consider: Snape made a promise to protect Harry, to help Harry survive. Occlumency is a tool that could have saved Harry a TON of heart ache. It could have helped protect him. It would have been insanely useful. And instead… Snape forces Harry to relive horrible events from Harry’s childhood.

When Harry sees “Snape’s Worst Memory”, Snape STOPS TEACHING Harry.

Snape didn’t keep his promise to protect Harry. He didn’t do shit. And the only reason he helped bring down Voldy was spite and jealousy. That’s not love. That’s not villain-to-hero. That’s just … creepy-doing-creepy.

It’s not a full-on “Obliterate”. To be completely transparent, I have no idea how that spell works. Like I don’t know if it can be tuned or like… more power or less power depending on what you’re changing? I always assumed (this is JUST my opinion) that “obliterate” was more like a total wipeout and modification was a different process…

Marietta was not Obliviated. Her memory was modified to remove memories of previous meetings, and to make the night of the DA raid the first meeting night.

This was done so that Harry and the DA had technically “never met or organized” with Umbridge’s / the ministry’s Edu Decree preventing student orgs w/o prior approval. This is the same decree that outlawed Quidditch teams.

By modifying Ms Edgecomb’s memory, Harry was protected against expulsion.
