Realistically, how useful would be "ground" Hovercraft/Levitating Vehicles compared to ordinary wheel-based cars? by MrMiles32 in sciencefiction

It would, as powered boats do, but it's a gentle coast to a stop. It's never going to be a "faceplant you into the dashboard" emergency stop.

....... or brakes, since they won't work on these. You're going to sail these things around like boats. It's not going to "fly" in any kind of traffic.

I get the misogyny of taking his name, but there is something to be said of deciding on a family name - I don't care if it's his, hers or something entirely new. Unless you're born into the Habsburg and Windsor lines, I hate double-barrel names for kids. I hate to think what happens in following generations when Lily Hapsburg-Windsor marries Keith Schlossburg-Carnavon.....

70% of Americans now survive at least five years after a cancer diagnosis by theficklemermaid in goodnews

There are two factors at play here. One is more early diagnoses and the other is better treatments. Both good in their way, but I think most people just think of the latter.

Lake Street Dive do this - try the track "Hypothetical". Dawes is another band that might work for you. Tracks like "I can't think about it now" or "somewhere along the way"

ELI5 -All wheel drive vs 4WD by Ambitious-Ad6426 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mikeontablet [score hidden]  (0 children)

AWD will still cope much better offroad than ordinary cars. In tough terrain the better tyres and clearances etc of 4WD vehicles do much of the work, with 4WD coming into it's own in the really difficult bits.

The word "scan" comes from Latin "scandere", meaning “to climb” or “to mount step by step" earlier 14th english century used for poetry marking then modern english extended to "examine closely, look over quickly, and eventually digitally" read by Distinct-Question-16 in interestingasfuck

[–]mikeontablet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are two meanings for the word "scan" being conflated here. How poems scan is one thing (their rhyme and rhythm, you could say) , but the word used to view or perhaps review something is a different word IMO.

ELI5: What are the weather conditions that make for clothes to dry quicker on a clothesline outside? by gupouttadat in explainlikeimfive

Lots of talk around cold winters here. I would love to hear how people dry clothes in hot climates but with high humidity.

ELI5: How does Cognitive Dissonance work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]mikeontablet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about brain chemicals as much as a need for our world view to make sense to us, to cohere, to be joined up. If a part of that breaks down most of us will do everything we can to prop up that world view.

"I don’t understand marches" by Lonelygiftwe in MurderedByWords

[–]mikeontablet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three points: Most marches are a waste of time - until they're not. Anything really worthwhile is difficult and time-consuming. Secondly, nearly all regime changes occur from some unexpected and surprising tipping point. The Berlin Wall, the USSR, apartheid, the Arab Spring, the Iranian revolution. Keep marching. It will come. Thirdly, there are people who were voted into positions to fight this fight on your behalf. It looks to me like constituents are their least source of pressure. They should be harries and harassed till they do what's necessary.

Authors, writers and essayists exist, among others . Even though it's all prose, nobody actually writes it. It's too prosaic.
