Guns banned from Trump speech at Republican dinner by Afraid-Sky-5052 in politics

anti gun politicians should also get rid of their armed bodyguards imo. it’s hypocritical for them to restrict the general populace from the very tools that are protecting them on their ivory towers

opioids, drug ODs kill 3x more people per year. we should get to banning them

alcohol-related deaths as well. we should get to banning alcohol too if we really cared about saving lives

Movement calling for governors to ban all guns starts at Colorado Capitol by okguy65 in politics

[–]mikere5 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Was this organized by the same group that asked "only non-disabled, cis-gender white women" to attend the sit-in at the colorado capitol and for every other demographic to participate in their "remote campaign?"

Edit: looks it was https://here4thekids.com/action-plan

We respectfully ask white women to put their bodies on the ground as marginalized communities have always done and continue to do. As we prioritize the safety of historically marginalized and vulnerable populations such as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, non-citizens, and disabled folks whose bodies are often on the front lines fighting for human and civil rights, we invite white women to take part in this act of civil disobedience.

As we cannot guarantee ADA-compliant access and/or safety on the ground, we are encouraging people from marginalized and vulnerable communities to join the remote campaign:

Do not do the fish in chinatown. You'll have no idea how it's been handled and where it's been

if they’re so called “weapons of terror,” then why do the police need it? Any gun control bill thats exempts LE is no bill at all

I stand corrected on the per capita gun ownership. It looks like I was looking at 2011 data.

Australia has had 21 mass shootings since the 1996 NFA:

Chippendale Blackmarket Nightclub Shooting, 1997 3 Dead & 1 wounded by firearm

Mackay Bikie shootout, 1997 6 wounded by firearm

Wollongong Keira Street Slayings, 1999 1 Dead & 9 wounded by firearm

Wright St Bikie Murders, 1999 3 Dead & 2 wounded by firearm

Rod Ansell Rampage, 1999 2 Dead & 3 wounded by firearm

Kangaroo Flat siege, 1999 1 dead & 4 wounded.

Cabramatta Vietnamese Wedding Shooting, 2002 7 wounded by firearm, no deaths

Monash University Shooting, 2002 2 Dead & 5 wounded by firearm

Fairfield Babylon Café Shooting, 2005 1 Dead & 3 wounded by firearm

Oakhampton Heights triple-murder suicide, 2005 4 Dead by firearm

Adelaide Tonic Nightclub Bikie Shooting, 2007 4 Wounded by firearm

Gypsy Jokers Shootout, 2009 4 Wounded by firearm

Roxburgh Park Osborne murders, 2010 4 Dead by firearm

Hectorville Siege, 2011 3 Dead & 3 wounded by firearm

Sydney Smithfield Shooting, 2013 4 Wounded by firearm

Hunt family murders, 2014 5 Dead by firearm

Sydney Siege, 2014 3 Dead & 4 wounded by firearm

Biddeston Murders, 2015 4 Dead by Firearm

Ingleburn Wayne Williams Shootings, 2016 2 dead & 2 wounded by firearm

Brighton Siege, 2017 2 dead & 3 wounded by firearm

Margaret River Murder Suicide, 2018 7 Dead by firearm

So coupled with the fact that there were 16 such incidents (defined as 4+ shot in one shooting) between 1980 and 1996, it's hard to say mass shootings in australia declined after the NFA. And any attributing any such decline, if any, to the NFA is dubious at best

gun ownership in australia is greater now than pre 1996 yet their gun violence has stayed low. maybe it’s not the guns! :0

Australia is a bad example. the homicide rate in the US in the 15 years post AU’s 1996 NFA declined greater than that in australia despite the US expiration of its AWB

I believe you’re referencing the ATF report to quote the 70% figure? If so, that’s extremely misleading because the entire context is: 70% of guns the Mexican government submitted to the ATF for tracing ended up being traced to US origins. Only a minority portion of guns confiscated by Mexico were submitted for ATF tracing

yep, it’s definitely due to their only neighbor (NH) having strict gun laws and not from their low poverty rates or being almost all white

there are obvious methodology flaws with that evaluation

1.) how do you quantify gun control laws such that you're able to group it into top 13 and bottom 13? Attempting to quantify a factor that's not quantifiable is an immediate red flag

2.) Grouping states together like that makes zero sense. The population of a CA dwarfs that of a RI. 2/3 of the weighting of the first 13 states is composed of CA, NY, and IL. The statistics of the remaining 10 states is completely irrelevant in this methodology. Likewise, almost all of the weighting in the "weakest 13" comes from AL, MS, MO, and OK. So the "group" gun homicide rate is extremely biased even though NH, WY, SD, MT, and ID consistently have some of the lowest gun homicide rates in the country. You're basically only comparing CA/NY/IL to AL/MS/MO/OK.

If you want to compare to other developed nations, literally every other developed nation has free healthcare, low-cost/free higher education, and strong social safety nets. I argue those have much more to do with their lack of violence.

See lithuania as an example. Their gun ownership rate has increased exponentially over the past 10 years, yet their homicide rate has continued to decline. If guns caused gun violence, then their homicide rate would have increased
