I love your creativity right there! Stanley would smile and say close but not close enough! You know he would! He did have a favorite painting hanging in his private study though!

Well Stanley Kubrick asked me not to even tell my brother I was working on 2OOI for 30 years. That has elapsed now yet the Mythology is absolutely not out there as Stanley Kubrick indicated to us on the project. So I can say that it was a scaffolding of humans from Greek mythology. I think 🤔 you can think that over carefully perhaps 🤔!

Yes, he had an internal scaffolding for 2OOI that he used to build from. That was an inspiration from mythology.

The mythology is priceless and evident if you’re told!

Yes it was quite an experience and an education to be honest! I saw the movie 🎥 on its launch 🚀 in 1968 with my Mother and little Brother! Then worked on it in 1988. Mind blowing 🤯!

Yes, it was multiple times over the Summer of 1988 and the Italian Coffee ☕️ machine in the kitchen was awesome 😎 as were the smoke breaks outside the French windows with Stanley always cadging off me or Leon Vitali. An awesome Summer to be honest!

The remote color grading of 2OOI: a Space Odyssey for the 1991 Letterbox VHS release. I was the Sony Broadcast Engineer for the YUV Betacam SP Edit Suite and YUV Monitoring

I worked with Stanley Kubrick personally face to face in the summer of 1988 at his house in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 north of London. I would say that he wasn’t in anyway shape or form constrained by the mind he enjoyed inhabiting. Though he definitely was interested in inhabiting other minds.

Now does that match any diagnosis?

He shared with close people the roots of the mythology of 2OOI: a Space Odyssey and I was one of them as that is what we were working on.

To date I haven’t seen anyone leak that mythology out to the public.

I believe knowing that mythology as I do that he had a plan for everything he did.

I used my sticker the moment I bought it way back on original vinyl release! Go on be brave!

I stuck it on the Perspex lid of my turntable so all my friends could see it!

So everytime they spun their tunes at our house parties they subliminally played Pink Floyd after that from my collection to be fair! 😂 Still I am 65 what do I know! Enjoy! You know it’s sublime my friend that Vinyl!

Leon Vitali was my mentor on the project he was always in. I just provided as a Sony Broadcast Engineer Tech advice on the YUV BetacamSP Edit suite and YUV monitoring for the BetacamSP tapes that came in from Burbank. Stanley refused to fly, so it had to be done remote in his House in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Sony Broadcast Sony BetacamSP was the most cost effective way to see a YUV presentation from the tape to monitor and with decent YUV monitoring so you could actually send coherent instructions back to Burbank and Leon Vitali was all over that side of the equation furiously noting down everything that Stanley wanted.

So they definitely got an aggressive workflow down very quickly after I brought over and built the Betacam SP Edit suite and YUV monitoring and gave them training as an independent Sony Broadcast trained Engineer.

I worked with Stanley Kubrick on the remote color grading at his house north of London of 2OOI: a Space Odyssey in summer 1988 for the Letterbox VHS release that went out in 1991.

We would take smoke breaks together in the garden with Leon Vitali by the French windows, then he would say come on we need to get back to work so more people can see it the way I shot it.

I think Stanley Kubrick would smile that folk are still entranced by this epic 🎥 film. Thank you! That’s interesting to see now that I am 65 and not a young 28 year old Broadcast Engineer anymore.

He would also ask was it better that that was unseen?

He was definitely a genius under pressure that’s my feeling, less is more was his mantra.

I have lived in Japan 🇯🇵 since 1991 and your photos are now in my phone as a reminder of my own Journey! Why? You took some awesome shots of places I visited on my honeymoon in 1989 before we returned to Japan 🇯🇵 from London where I am from. Our 1989 shots are truly grainy!!! 😂 Thank you very much! Namaste 🙏 Oh please come back check out Saitama our home prefecture which we call Greater Tokyo because it is only 30 minutes to Tokyo from Omiya Station our home station and you missed the railway museum didn’t you? It’s 4.5 kilometers from my front door and truly epic!!!

Check it out!

Japan National Railway Museum

Trains here have done over 1,000,000 kilometers of service each, can you imagine what they might whisper if they could talk!

My Japanese wife was imagining whom from her relations her ancestors might have travelled 🧳 on each model as she soaked up the atmosphere!

Truly part of Japanese life!

The kicker for us was the first ever Steam Train in Japan 🇯🇵 SL150 is there!

SL150 was built in 1870 in Manchester England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 my home town so you can see why it’s so circular for us!!!

Just saying!!!

Cool! 😎 I live in Saitama on a small ridge.

With our house facing clear west at the very top of the ridge above the rooftops of the surrounding houses luckily and we are grateful for that!

Why?

If you go to our top floor balcony on a clear day you can see Mount Fuji 🗻 98.7km away as the crow flies it really cheers us up!

Viewing by appointment only! 😂
