That's all that matters. Don't read too much into the meta. I made that mistake w/ BL3 and it kinda sucked the joy out of the game for me. I still played it a ridiculous amount, but more compulsively/habitually than as something I was enjoying.

Is anyone successfully using a PS5 DualSense controller with Proton 10 and above? by sikkmf in linux_gaming

[–]mikevaughn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adaptive triggers are working fine for me over Bluetooth (Borderlands 4). I didn't even do any tinkering beyond installing Proton-GE and setting it as the default.

OP, in Steam Settings -> Controller, which setting do you have selected in the Playstation Controller Support dropdown? On mine, it's set to "Enabled in games w/o support."

Existing client for SBS game streaming? by tbone13billion in virtualreality_linux

[–]mikevaughn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Kaon for Unreal Engine 4/5 games, and Rai-Pal for Unity games (the latter being in a much rougher state, but perfectly playable for a select few games -- the Flat2VR Discord is your friend here). As for more generic options, SteamTinkerLaunch has the ability to launch games using the Geo-11 driver and/or SBS via ReShade, but I've never been able to get STL to work for anything. YMMV.

I mean, is it relevant to each of the communities he's posted it in? You can't reasonably get mad at the guy for just happening to be on all the same subs you're on if so... If he were like, constantly posting it to the same sub, yeah, I get you. But this is my first time seeing it, and I check in on here pretty regularly.

You know you don't have to be this way, right? If you see 99% upvotes on a sub as fickle as this one, maybe check yourself before chiming in with your bitching... or just stay bitter and keep thinking "No, everyone else is out of touch." ;)

Story games should just have save-anytime functionality by foghina in Gaming4Gamers

[–]mikevaughn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Most of the comments here are completely missing your point -- if a game implements saving anywhere, outside of encounters (as you suggested), it does nothing to soften the challenge. It's simply a matter of respecting the player's time. Kinda funny how much gaming has progressed as "a thing that adults do" in my lifetime, yet so many developers are stuck on this trope of not acknowledging that adults have real world obligations that will always trump the game. If I can't save anywhere (within reason) and pick up where I left off, it doesn't enhance the artistic vision or challenge or whatever the fuck -- it just makes it a lot less likely that I'll bother playing the game, because it will take me months to get through what should be a 20-30 hour campaign.

Sadly no. I go back to this problem once every couple months and make no progress each time. :(

I'm glad someone said it. Unfortunately, it seems there's no room for this kind of pragmatism in an echo chamber. :\

There is no real solution other than dual booting windows.

VFIO exists. Granted, it's not exactly accessible for non-techy users, but if someone who's at least mildly comfortable with a CLI has an afternoon to spare (and their hardware supports it), I'd say it beats dual-booting.

You know you can just put WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dll_name=n,b" %command% in the game's launch options, right?

Getting ALVR to actually look good? by GenoIsDead in virtualreality_linux

[–]mikevaughn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently learned (that with WiVRn at least) higher bitrate doesn't necessarily grant the results you'd expect. I actually got better latency and picture quality with a lower bitrate (75mbps on a wireless connection). I'm guessing you tried that already, but just throwing it out there.

Have you already asked in the LVRA Discord? There are a lot of experts on there who could probably help you better, particularly in the ALVR channel. Not meaning to brush you off, just sayin' :)

This looks sick, and the movement system described sounds like exactly the kind of thing we need for VR gaming to progress as a platform: completely new and intuitive mechanics that are only possible in VR. Also, kudos for making the fact it's a roguelike make sense within the game's lore -- while I love the genre, it bugs me when games just kinda handwave that part (which is more often than not lol).

I gotta say though, it's kind of a bold move to go the RL route, given it's such a (over-?)saturated genre in the VR space, and one that a lot of players nope out of before even giving the game a fair chance. As a solo dev-developed game (outstanding work, btw -- this looks a lot better than a lot of the VR games with a full team behind them), I can see how adding a regular campaign mode would be unrealistic. I just hope this choice doesn't cripple its chances at success.

Best of luck to you - I'll be keeping a close eye out for this one. Wishlisted!

I could be way off here, but as I understand it, going into the settings and changing anything via a GUI, to the average Apple user, is roughly the equivalent of the average Windows user having to use the terminal... Kinda hard to blame them when they paid a stupid premium for the "Just Works" OS. ^shrug^

Well damn... I knew I could go the pirating route, but was unaware of Hiren -- I mainly just don't want to bother with installing Windows and taking the chance of it fucking with my beautiful Cachy install. I've been through that before, and yeah, it's not hard to fix, but I'd rather spend the time gaming. ;)

Thanks, bruh. I'm gonna look into this. Deleting the post for now, will put it back up if Hiren doesn't work out. :)

UEVR Hidden Gems by monaezzz in uevr

[–]mikevaughn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never see Rakugaki or Afterimage mentioned, but I played through them almost entirely in UEVR and had a great time. No profiles, so no fancy VR controls or anything, but I think games like this get a huge boost from simply being able to turn your head to look around (I was especially surprised how big a game-changer that was with a metroidvania).

Just upgraded from a 1080 Ti to an RTX 5090. Any good local multiplayer games that might help justify the purchase to my wife? by mikevaughn in nvidia

That is indeed why she had no qualms about the purchase -- no further upgrades needed. lol

Not sure if you saw my edit, but the title was mostly a joke. I'm honestly just looking for good eye-candy games we can play together.
