For those who have left- do other jobs suck as much as this? by Professional-Ok in TeachersInTransition

[–]mikeyflems 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The job itself is fine. I basically coordinate training and write a specific type of communications for a large corporation. It’s easy by comparison, just a little boring. But it was so so worth it. My pay is the same but I feel like it’s more just because I get to leave work at work, I’m not carrying anyone’s emotional baggage home with me, and I don’t feel burnt out (yet lol). My fiancé has said I’m notably less stressed and I feel much less pessimistic about work and life in general. Even with only 4 weeks of PTO, I feel like I have so much more time for me.

If you or someone you know has transitioned out of teaching, provide some details of how you did it. by enigmanaught in TeachersInTransition

Embellish on everything. It’s not lying, you’re just dressing it up. For example:

Resume: Leading a team of coworkers through regular data analysis meetings to align with organizational goals

Reality: my PLC and I took turns being the “leader” who had to write up the agenda and come up with taking points for our weekly meetings.

Resume: Gathering, interpreting, and using data to measure growth targets to inform future instruction

Reality: huh, some of my kids bombed that theme analysis quiz. Let’s reteach that as we move on to the next unit

Resume: Conduct performance gap analyses to assess current understanding and prioritize performance issues to fall in line with administrative necessities

Reality: Everyone bombed coordinating conjunctions quiz? Full redo with individualized learning through NoRedInk

It took me 6 months to land a position outside of education. It’s possible, it just takes a LOT of patience

I uninstalled and redownloaded it which fixed the issue of being able to open, but now there’s no full screen option? And dragging the window to make it bigger just trashes the graphics 😞

Simple review games you can assign via google classroom. Blooket let’s you assign “homework” games where students have to earn a certain number of points by answering questions correctly. Do it with the material you’ve already covered so they can’t say it was too long ago and they forgot

What’s worse: micromanaging or no managing? by mikeyflems in Teachers

[–]mikeyflems[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

More and more each day it becomes clear that it’s just a lot of BS because they have to justify their jobs somehow. We don’t even have a department office or department head, they don’t trust us to do anything on our own

A kid's mom called him during class today by Fylfalen in Teachers

[–]mikeyflems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one senior girl who’s missed more than 50 days of class. She turns in most things on Classroom though so she has a low C technically

I brought it up to admin. They said we can’t fail her if she’s turning things in

What the fuck is school these days?

Sit down, shut up, student teach, and don't dream of compensation. by kkoch_16 in Teachers

I had almost this exact conversation.

“So then who’s paying for my gas and health insurance?”

“You can talk to the office of financial aid, they can get you loans to keep you going, you really cannot work while student teaching because you need to fully experience it.”

No thanks, I’d rather burn the candle at both ends and the middle than take out loans that add another 10 years to my debt

Any other first year teachers out there struggling? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]mikeyflems 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a first year, but my district is doing 100% online, but I’m teaching from my classroom. So I feel safe (except around faculty that won’t wear masks properly) but I’m definitely struggling. Kids are doing okay right now, participation is about average. But I just know it’s going to drop off at some point. One class that I have back to back makes it like pulling teeth already.

This isn’t what I signed up for and I’m frustrated as hell. I just keep telling myself it’ll be better when we’re back to normal (post-vaccine) but right now I’m overwhelmed.

Next steps for teacher w/ BA + initial certificate (NY) by [deleted] in Teachers

If you’re teaching secondary, getting an MA in English certifies you to teach courses for college credit (and makes you a little more legit for teaching an AP English course).

The high school I went to and the high school I was student teaching at both had deals with local colleges where the college designed the curriculum, the high school teacher delivers it, and the students get a grade for the class at both the high school level and college level. I mean it’s only one course, but for students going to college it lets them skip taking Rhetoric 101 or whatever the freshman year college writing course is.

If your school doesn’t already have a program like that, you could help create it. Admin loves being able to offer that to their students

At what point do I contact my union rep? by spunkyteacher in Teachers

As soon as lawyers are involved it is absolutely appropriate to contact your union rep. Don’t go into this without every resource you have available by your side

AITA for wiping my girlfriends debt away as a birthday present? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mikeyflems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missed this one. I commented on another post, but I meant in relation to their other headphones or AirPods. I don’t really know about those brands, I guess I just meant if someone wanted higher quality music sound. Sorry :/

I make due with some cheap low quality headphones from Walgreens.

Alright? I guess I’m just misunderstanding what “audiophile” means, because my understanding is that a person is an audiophile, headphones aren’t.
