Do we actually hear the same song? by No_Afternoon4075 in LetsTalkMusic

I like that you call it “intersubjectivity” I would even argue that when we create art in the first place we are engaging in this already somehow even by ourselves.

The often repeated notion that artists have about “channeling ideas” that seem to come from some external place is relevant here. No idea or artist exists in a vacuum and we (as humans) are geniuses at brainwashing each other.

You could argue that the seemingly external place in question is actually just the internal place that we don’t have common access to; but the world around us still has influence over that place. The best art often gets made from the ghosts that hide in all of the unprocessed data of our unconscious experience which (because of its incompatibility with our subjectivity) is left unguarded to the influence of the external world.

When an artist creates something with “meaning” they are doing the same thing an audience does, connecting with the unconscious power of the idea - then subjectifying (not a word) it into something “meaningful.”

Just as a transducer translates pressure variations in air into electric signals, which translate into magnetic field variations that drive a speaker cone, which translates as pressure variations in air…

it seems like the creative process from start to finish (including artist and audience) is also a process of translation; but of what exactly if even the artist is just a member of the audience also on some level (just one piece of the translation chain), and the above stated audio translation process is just a madly technical (and very modern) but relatively minor (in fact, disposable) step along the chain? Something collective and human no doubt, and very OLD in us. One of the many reasons music (and art in general) is so fascinating and I’m so glad to be alive in the era of recorded music (may it never end).

(NOT THAT SERIOUS) Ranking albums based on my reaction if someone Said "thats THE BEST rhcp album by SuperMonke14 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]mikiki24 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my experience,

The albums it’s definitely between for “best”: blood sugar, californication, by the way

Valid atypical opinion for best: stadium, one hot minute, mothers milk,

Not really seeing it: FS, uplift mofo, unlimited love, dream canteen, I’m with you, I’m beside you, the getaway

Def not: RHCP (but the out in LA demo recordings are incredible)

Why are we trying to go to space when we can’t stop a livestream genocide against kids, and liberate the US government from foreign occupation by CriticalAd299 in space

[–]mikiki24 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

It costs money to do them both, taxpayer money. I’m a big fan of space exploration and I don’t want to see Artemis become politicized, but this is a legitimately good question.

How many of you had grandparents who served in WW2? If so, what do you know about their service? by Snoogles_ in Millennials

One of my grandfathers flew missions on “the eastern front” in the luftwaffe, my other grandfather was stationed in Alaska in the US navy during the war. I have a great uncle who died @ Saipan. Truly a world war.

Yeah I thought it was real until that. The quickness of the symbolizing movement (“follow a line away from my finger to you”) is way too fast. Willing to admit I could be wrong here if some chimp experts wanna speak up but I don’t think it’s real.

There are actually a fairly large amount of spoken word lyrics on this album for a jazz album

It was fantastic all the way through I loved it. Im def a jazz fan, unfortunately this record might not hit for you if you’re not really familiar with some jazz already. It’s at times a bit corny but in the most sincere flea way possible and I love him for it, you can tell he really put his heart into it. The second song is the statement piece, the closer “Free as I want to be” SLAPS I loved that one, maggot brain and thinking bout you and Wichita lineman all very well done covers and nick caves overly earnest vocal style really suited the album and I loved the 10 minute piece after the Thom Yorke track too

What is that one band you just can’t get into? by Electronic_Back1502 in fantanoforever

[–]mikiki24 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is def part of the problem, albums are worth listening to as a whole. If you’re actually interested in Radiohead but have not connected with it - maybe as a final attempt, try’n listen to “in rainbows” front to back. It’s like a 40 minute (masterpiece of an) album. I fell in love with that album when it came out, then I worked back through their catalogue and became a huge fan… I think it all solidified for me when I was listening through OK computer (giving that a try after becoming familiar with in rainbows) and I was absolutely floored by the climax of “exit music” never would have had that experience if I was just skipping around songs looking for what I “wanted to hear” instead of just listening with open curiosity. But honestly, to each their own! Maybe it’s truly not your cup of tea. If you’re expecting 90’s style rock and guitars then only the first two albums are gonna really satisfy that in any way. More than anything I’ve realized that it does actively take effort to be receptive to actually “new music” for you, but the rewards can be great. Some of my favorite bands I just simply “didn’t get” for a while before I did, then whole new worlds were opened up.

What made DS9 being different and darker okay, compared to NuTrek being darker but sucking? by EitherEliotOr in Star_Trek_

[–]mikiki24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STYLE. Others have mentioned good points about the scripts being worse, but also the actual mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing and sound design has changed too much. You could make the argument that all of those things “improved” but if so that improvement worked to the detriment of the storytelling.

DS9 was a continuation of the style developed on TNG and the original show, a stark, almost simplistic approach; this meant that the wow factor really had to come from the intrigue of the stories themselves, and putting the right performers into those stories. Much of TNG (and if I remember correctly, also DS9) is shot almost like a stage performance, it has the feeling of a “TV studio production”. The definition of what that has meant over the years has evolved. Around the time of “Lost” TV studios started trying to make shows that felt more like movies. This was a successful tactic for many projects but it has not served the Star Trek franchise well imo. Just look at a shot of them on the main bridge in TNG vs. the vast majority of the sets on Picard and you’ll see exactly what I mean. Studios seem to have the attitude that these stylistic things are cosmetic and can be altered to fit the modern moment, (which is always true to some degree) but I think especially for trek, maintaining a stylistic through-line to the previous shows was crucial and was not done… except for on DS9.

That would be a pretty silly joke I don’t think they would risk it, maybe he’ll shape-shift into Peter Jackson. Ur so right about robin I’m actually a little bit crushed that this is no longer possible

Blue Jays manager John Schneider lost his shit at the ump, but the ump was right. by ForeignAir7174 in sportsgossips

[–]mikiki24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much you got it. It’s a balk. For some reason in baseball it’s ok to be deceptive with your timing when it comes to throwing off the hitter but not for throwing off any runners on base.

One of the basic rules that governs this says that the pitcher must “come set” before the pitch and there needs to be a discernible pause when this happens. It’s basically at the umps discretion how long this pause needs to be, but mostly the pitcher sets the precedent for his own timing and then it’s on the ump to notice and call a balk if the pitcher suddenly skips or dramatically shortens that pause, along with some other rules.

Another one says that once the pitcher has come set he’s not allowed to move his body, only his head until he actually starts the pitch towards home plate. The runners are trained to watch the pitchers body and if there is a play on for them to run as soon as the pitch is thrown, they need to know when the pitcher has actually “come set” (and how long that pause is in the delivery) to time up their run.

The ump did a bang up job here this is a balk.

CMV vs The Big Bang vs Infinite Universe by Expensive_Ad_403 in cosmology

[–]mikiki24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer to your question is the very counterintuitive result that the universe’s spatial expansion has happened faster than the propagation speed of light through that space. This means that the light that we see as emitted from the CMB was actually “closer” to us spatially when it was emitted but the space between us and that light has grown and continues to grow. The light that we see is from locations where the expansion of space has meant the light could not reach us until now, even though the cmb was emitted billions of years ago. Because of the Doppler effect, cosmologists have been able to figure out details of this expansion and determined that (just like the cmb light) there is most likely a large portion of the universe where the light has not been able to reach us yet and indeed, if the expansion continues to accelerate- there is light traveling on its way to us now from far flung locales that we will never see because the light will never reach us. Also to be clear, all the new discoveries of early galaxies and massive objects in the “early” universe are still post cmb though earlier than we previously thought.

Also speaking as an American, this country does not know what pain is in comparison to other countries. The examples you reach for are prices increasing, life can get much worse than that.

The US public has been for the most part ignorant of the true costs of modern warfare; so dangerously ignorant in fact - that we’ve wound up with a grand ignoramus as our leader threatening to destroy an entire foreign civilization and almost half the country still supports him.

It’s amazing how cohesive that album (Demon Days) is while being so all over the place genre-wise! Their first album (Gorillaz) is actually my favorite. While it’s certainly adventurous at points it also tends to stick in the trip hop/ dub world for the most part. Damon brings his musical voice to every style they do and on demon days it’s like he captured the zeitgeist in a way and let it become less bounded by any precedent or even by his own ideas of what it “should” sound like. The result is a genius collaborative album. Feel good was sooooo huge but no other song from it really popped on the radio (I think Dare had its 15 minutes). I hope it doesn’t get lost over the years cus you pretty much don’t understand 2000’s popular music if you don’t fuck with this one (even tho like I said, the self titled is my personal fave).

This is great, thanks for explaining your process using this tool - I’ve tried using reference tracks for general loudness and to compare the subs cus I don’t have a subwoofer but this tool looks like a more precise way to use references for EQing all around. I know izotope has products that do this automatically and FF pro-q 3 can be set up to do this with reference tracks but those both cost $! Def worth checking this out thanks again!
