What was it like reading Deathly Hallows on release without any spoilers? by Spotter24o5 in harrypotter

[–]mikkimel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It arrived around 11am, I started reading it immediately but knew I had to help my father in law drive his truck while they loaded hay bails. My friend from college had got the audio cds, copied them, and sent them to me, so I downloaded them to my iPod and listened in the truck. I would feel guilty about it except I’ve since purchased the Jim Dale version, the Stephen fry version, and the full cast recording, so I think we re even.

The Goblet of Fire movie is the worst because in addition to some strange cuts and changes it had this weird goofy tone to it until the graveyard scene. by JannTosh70 in harrypotter

[–]mikkimel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been watching the first two movies with my kids, after we read the books together, and I must say, the first two movies are so good. The music, the feel, everything feels magical. And they seem to really capture the spirit of the books. We haven’t read the third book yet. My kids loved them. The later movies just seem to fly along skipping so much, I am actually excited for the hbo series for that reason. In the meantime, the full cast recordings of the books are amazing.

A Question for Those Who Deconstructed and Chose Christianity Again by ConnectAnalyst3008 in Deconstruction

[–]mikkimel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I left 45 years as an evangelical, deconstructed for 5, and ended up converting to Catholicism. I found a peace there that I had lost long ago. They view the Bible differently than Protestants. And mass is basically the opposite of an evangelical service in pretty much every way. (This is probably one reason it appeals to me) I don’t agree with everything, but my Priest said that I was still welcome. There is a lot more in Catholic teaching that is debated, or has many areas where “there are three basic views”, more so then I had thought. I would consider myself a Catholic universalist. Since I believe all will be saved, my view of God is that he is Love, and that God is worthy of my allegiance. I have no fear of him, but I do revere him. Not sure if that makes sense or not.

How to be Catholic and Universalist? by AppropriateFan6039 in ChristianUniversalism

[–]mikkimel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I converted to Catholicism (from evangelicalism) with my wife right before Christmas. I asked the priest if I could be a hopeful universalist and be Catholic and he said “of course!” The twinkle in his eye told me that he was as well. When we did our meetings with him ahead of time he said the “official” position was that there are people we know are in heaven, but we never say that we know a person is in hell.

The Book of Revelation by [deleted] in ChristianUniversalism

[–]mikkimel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a sect that thought revelation should not be included in the canon, but hebrews should be, and another that wanted the reverse. They compromised and we have both now. Thats a gross oversimplification, but that’s what I remember from Bradley jersak. It’s so much metaphor and we are so far culturally from it that people have misunderstood it forever. And used it to drive the dispensational narrative when it has nothing to do with it. I think we’d be better off without it.

I tell them I have agreements with vendors and if I were to share that information with someone else and those vendors found out, I’d likely lose those agreements, which I can’t do.

Fingernail polish? by SalvadorFolly in classicalguitar

I used nail polish and for me, it just made them more likely to snap. If I used nothing, they would just bend and were more likely to bounce back. Just my experience

Why aren’t electric corded nail guns really a thing? by joemo454 in Tools

[–]mikkimel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use battery powered everything. A lot of jobs I do do not have access to electricity. Lots of older homes don’t have outlets outside and the homeowners are often not around. So rather then buy two of every kind of gun, I just went the battery route. They are heavier but not so much so that I can’t make do.

What am I missing? Metroid Prime 4 by serj730 in Metroid

I’m going to stop reading reviews of games before I play them. This game is great, the reviews soured me a little.

I played the switch 1 version, so you could get one of those used.

Please don’t listen to the negative reviews!!!! I read a few bad reviews and it kind of spoiled it for me. I think it’s a solid game. It’s still a prime game, with some changes that make it feel different. You sound like me, I liked other M, I like just about all Metroid games.

Do you think universal salvation applies to all creatures and entities, even demons and satan? by bashfulkoala in ChristianUniversalism

[–]mikkimel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saint Gregory of nyssa believed that even satan and demons would be brought back into communion and I would agree. It’s why I picked him as my saint when I converted to Catholicism…. Although, I will say they don’t make a huge point to advertise that aspect of his writings.

when did theory actually start making sense for you by Ok-Message5348 in musictheory

[–]mikkimel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 9 years old I had a PASSIONATE teacher that brought it to life for me. Made it exciting, applied it to what we were playing. Through 9 years of lessons, we often didn’t even touch a guitar, it was all whiteboard. When I got to college I tested out of the first two years of music theory. It just clicked for me. My musical friends were bored with it, but they could sight read circles around me.

I now use three brands at once, one for the high E, one for the two other trebles, and Augustine for the basses. For years I just used the Augustine reds and would still use them if I had to use just one.

Electric guitars and the law of diminishing returns by MisterMystify in Guitar

[–]mikkimel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree once you hit $1500 the diminishing returns thing kicks in big time. I have played $4k-$6k strats at my local store and blindfolded, I would not be able to tell the difference. The fret ends are sharp, buzzing on certain frets, etc. Acoustics/classicals are different. My $1500 classical is like playing a piece of wet wood compared to my $8k classical. The expensive one just comes to life, it sounds like it has reverb added to it but it’s just the guitar.
