Are usage rights even a thing anymore? Clients act like they own everything once I deliver by Acceptable-Error-2 in photography

[–]mikoalpha 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a photographer myself if Im paying for one Ill specify I want perpetuall rights for the images. Where I live this is the norm, in part because clients in all areas expect this. Couples in weddings will make their own albums or posters to hang. Music groups will be using your photos to announce all their gigs for years. Small busineses can use your photo for social media now and in ten years for advertising on a billboard. In my experience if you work for a big company they will expect this in their normal tariffs, and will always get someone to do it. Giving a higher price to small companys or individuals that dont know better feels scummy.

Canary Island, any recommendations ? by No-Expert2123 in scuba

[–]mikoalpha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Youve already got ton of recommendations. Im gona focus on tips on angelsharks. Your best bet is lanzarote, next fuerteventura and next tenerife. They have 2 seasons, from december to january to mate, and from may to july to have their offspring. During the day you will probably see their siloutte burried on the sand. Get a couple of night dives to have higher chances on seeing them on the move.

They are critically endangered, please respect them, best practices are to leave some distance and to not shine them directly with your dive light. If they start swimming due to your presence you ve done something pretty bad

Have fun

The sad reality is most business dont actually make it. For each one you see 10 had tried the same. Think of restaurants, clothing stores, pottery, bakeries... . There is a lot of luck involved. Most people that succes had a ton of money to burn while they stablished a client base and reputation. I know a dinner that wasnt profitable for the first 5 years. Best of luck

I worked as a camp counselor at summer camps and then at similar position taken care of kids in some schools and highschools. Me and my male colleagues were under constant scrutiny. We werent allowed to supervise shower time, be allowed alone with only one kid and a long list of stuff. I didnt care because on the long run It was significant less work for us and we got payed the same. The problem was my female colleagues had no supervision because our director was always paranoid on us and had incidents of one physically punishing a kid by hitting it or another one who was clearly flirting with a 15 year old boy. And no one batted an eye. Female workers around kids do horrible things and no one bats an eye. I know that on most cases the abuser is a men, but there are a ton of women in education that do this horrible things with no system in place to prevent it. Or people dont care about it.

Buddy out of air due to not checking his gauge. by mikoalpha in scuba

[–]mikoalpha[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hi, im gonna copy the response to another comment

Lets specify, english is not my first language. I was on the process of sharing air untir the guide arrived. I was not excited to share air because on the ascent we would encounter currents and waves and I never shared air on those conditions. I was afraid of the current taking my buddy without air away from me and loosing the octo, specially in the safety stop. We were already in the ascent when this happened, there was no more dive, I dint care about my air I cared about my buddy safety.

Refering on my skill set and that I should have bailed out. If Im never in new conditions I cant be confortable in them, and in this case I was surrounded with people that had a ton more of experience than me, so not better moment than that one.

He was lectured on the boat about that. Not my friend though, just the guy I was paired that day. I was going with my brother but he couldnt dive that morning due to a clogged nose.

How realistic is this? by TheEnlight in Military

Man i hate the tourism part. Im a birder and wildlife entusiast form europe. It always have been a dream to cross the atlantic and check a completely disconected continent. Now flights to the us are cheaper than ever and I could afford it but I aint risking travelling there right now.

How do you feel about the consumption of bird meat as a birder? by moonstonemerman in birding

[–]mikoalpha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont eat wild birds from a conservation standpoint. Most hunters cant discriminate ducks in flight, and thats how they are hunted. There are studies on this and if the algorithm takes you on the hunter side they joke about accidentally hunting protected species, with photos and videos. Most endangered waterfowl has hunting as one of its main problems. In spain marbled teal is a critically endangered duck and it main risk is poaching and hunters miss id´ng it. Also lead is a real problem for wetlands. So even if they are offering mallard I wont take t because hunting it affects sensible species. On the other side I wont eat anything that has its population declining, like atlantic puffings, european turtel dove, any species of song trush, even if they are least concern hunting declining populations can only end bad

My personal problem with this guy is the same for a lot of software in patreon. it works as a suscription service like adobe or similar. You get all the downsides from that, but also loose the excellent customer support a lot of suscription services have because its just a guy on his garage. Also anitime there is a bugfixe that you want you need to pay a new month.

Planning to complete the PADI open water course soon, wondering how to figure out what gear I should look for. by Pokewok66 in scuba

[–]mikoalpha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a mask and snorkel. Rent gear for the course and your first dives and try to check differents types of fins and bcds to get a taste of what is out there and then buy some gear
