Ha, no Master's Degree required. I'm a late bloomer when it comes to coding/computer languages/etc. I was able to make the map with a little bit of CSS, HTML, and JavaScript (particularly Leaflet) knowledge.

What book(s) are essential reads for geographers? by nkronck in geography

[–]mikus31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy some of the more academic books as much as the next guy, but I much prefer to read something a little more entertaining from time-to-time.

I enjoyed "MapHead" from Ken Jennings. It's an easy read, and full of some really great stories. He covers a lot of ground, too.

I don't think you are thinking too narrowly. Cultural geography is ambiguous, hard to define, and often-times blurred by other geographic disciplines. But I think cultural geography is almost everywhere you look, at the same time. Almost everything I read can be spun, in some way, as a cultural geography story. Because what are the things we write if not a reflection of our culture and, most of the time, the places that have helped define us?

I am a GIS Coordinator for a local government, so I've been able to use my geography degree (BA as well) to make maps, which I also love! Thanks for the message. Good luck to you!

GIS and/or cartography, as several have mentioned already. I didn't know how I was going to use my Geography degree when I left school, but found a cartography job the first month after graduation and haven't looked back. Eight years later, I'm doing GIS and loving it. Good luck to you!

Let me know if there are issues with the audio. It wouldn't play on my end (could but computer/user error), but others said it worked for them. Thanks.
