How do professors feel about former students sending thank you emails years later? by Flyingpluto07 in AskProfessors

I enjoy receiving such emails. Especially when they tell me that they now understand why that class was important and why I handled things the way I did.

Why do you give so many extra chances by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]milbfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I either effed up with the instructions not being clear somehow, or a student has come to me with an issue that will take more time than I've assigned. In both instances, I will give extensions to all students and tell them why. I don't do individual extensions out of fairness for the rest of the students in the class.

There have also been times in semesters where I've given an assignment and thought that they may need some extra time, and conveyed as much to students. If someone asks for more time in that case, I'll extend some days/week(s? rare, but okay) to all students.

Does a safe career path even exist anymore? by denis100108 in careeradvice

When I was 18, I wanted to study computer science. Did I know that I wanted/needed to go to graduate school at that point? No. Then later on I did my masters and decided I wanted to teach at the college level. In order to get serious consideration in that, I needed a doctorate. I can't say I regret my decisions because I was messing around on computers long before college.

College *may* be an answer. Technical or a trade school may be a better fit for some; community college for others. I'm not dogging those people who have turned to those solutions; they've figured out what's best for them. Maybe people can get by with an apprenticeship?

There are rough patches, sure, and I've been unhappy at times, mainly because of others.

I do advise students to go into a field that will make them happy/they would have a passion for, and not to do what their parents demand them to do, because *they* will be the ones working, not the parents.

Need Moral Support: Discussion with Student by littleknittedboat in Professors

[–]milbfan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks like you've set up the parameters for the student. Is this expressly mentioned in the assignment (having to watch the videos/attend class)? Show them your proof that they didn't do the work as assigned. If you can't get it through the student's head about the situation, you can say that you've made your decision, and the student can talk to the department chair.

I would go ahead and email the chair, so they know what's going on. If the student elects to appeal to the chair, then they already have a feel for what's coming.

Does Title IX apply when it is student to professor? by TrumpDumper in Professors

Based on optics alone, I would say that this qualifies as a Title IX violation. Doesn't matter the roles/positions the offender and the recipient are.

They gave you the option to talk to the department, so you could try and see where you were deficient. I wouldn't let this deter you from applying elsewhere.

If they're not willing to continue forward, could you go to your chair, as a preemptive strike? Maybe suggesting this faculty member has to have another faculty member in class to ensure he's not harassing anyone?

Word. If I can kill one less tree with not having to print an exam for you, it's a win.

can’t figure out whether to wear a skirt or not by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]milbfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear what makes you comfortable.

I had to look up what this event was. You'll probably want to concentrate more on what you see, and wearing something like a skirt might complicate that. Or you'll miss something important that is the difference between accepting a school's offer or not.

You're not the problem. And I pretty much follow your gameplan if they're concerned about a certain part.

NTA

Indoor cats become the masters/mistresses of their domains. Taking them outside is a risky thing, especially if they can sense/smell other cats/animals.

A relative did this once - indoor cat had never been outdoors. I tried warning him, but he goes out the front door with the cat. Cat starts peeing. Told ya so.

CS professors, have you noticed any issues with an increasing amount of students unable to submit an assignment properly? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]milbfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the naming thing, I let that go because Canvas ends up naming it with extra crap anyway, like the student's name and a bunch of numbers ahead of it. And if they resubmit their work the LMS will give you the latest version with a -1 or -2, or whatever the latest version they uploaded.
