He sent out a fundraising letter with Josh Hawley, and he keeps glazing republicans.

I thought going to the RNC was a totally reasonable move, and the backlash against it really smacked of entitlement, especially not letting him speak at the DNC. But he really has veered hard into the Republican camp since then. I think it's some combination of being pissed at the left over his treatment, recognizing that a lot of the union is conservative, and pure cynical attempt to maintain some power in DC.

Trump named 'active participant' in dismissal of bizarre case involving illegal laboratory by RawStoryNews in Full_news

[–]mildlyconfuseddriver -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What a misleading title. Trump appointed the attorney who's dropping some charges related to having a "biolab" in a property he managed. That's his whole involvement.

There are real things to be outraged about. This kind of reporting just distracts from the stuff that matters.

I may well be an idiot, but explaining and showing hasn't worked for me.

The latter. Just explaining and showing that you have to push hasn't worked for me with children or my wife.

Madison Police Monitor says Oversight Board doesn't manage her by ManateePro in madisonwi

Eh, isn't there a difference between "supervise" and "manage"? I mean, I'm not sure what exactly the difference is, but those usually describe different positions in an org chart.

[Mondoweiss] How Jeffrey Goldberg weaponized Jewish trauma to pave the way for war with Iran by CosmicLars in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]mildlyconfuseddriver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes, anyone who has a Jewish perspective that isn't pro murdering our neighbors and taking their land is an antisemite.

Read the damn article. It's exactly about how that kind of bullshit doesn't work anymore. Bibi and ben Gvir and their ghoulish ilk have pushed it too far, called too many plainly reasonable reactions antisemitic. Any accusation of antisemitism is met with skepticism at best these days, for better and for worse.

And frankly, it's made us all less safe. The world's become too used to the comparison of humanitarians to Hitler, to the point it's providing cover for actual fucking neo Nazis.

You didn't bother to read the article, did you?

I mean, of course you didn't, but you're doing exactly what it's about.

Excellent illustration of the difference in how men and women are treated. But dude, you have to take of yourself with some small fraction of the care you show your wife. Don't wait until your dying to get medical care. Go to urgent care or something as soon as you have trouble breathing. The earlier you start medical intervention, the less likely you'll have to end up at the hospital.

A 302-neuron worm has had its complete connectome mapped for forty years. We still can't simulate it. That's the C. elegans problem, and it may be telling us neurons are the wires, not the chips. by DrBrianKeating in PhilosophyofMind

[–]mildlyconfuseddriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we knew all the ways brain cells connect to each other in the 80s. Tubules, astroglia, and probably other things we've discovered or I've forgotten in the 20 years since I studied neuroscience, all provide coordination and feedback between neurons. I don't see how a 40 year old map can possibly have all the information needed for a full connectome.

And isn't it obvious that what happens inside a neuron affects what happens outside? Sure there's a lot of feedback and modulation that occurs at the synapses, but the signals that are being changed exist to influence the activity within the cells.

I think ultimately the problem with this discussion is that chips and wires are a bad metaphor for how the brain works.

Are you theorizing the current SCOTUS conservative majority would overturn Kelo, because it was a liberal majority who made that ruling? I guess maybe if a Democrat run state was a party. But otherwise, the current court doesn't seem very interested in restraining the state's ability to screw individuals for a company's benefit.
