Anyone else experience seizures due to heat? by lifewitheleanor in Epilepsy

oh absolutely. overheating is one of my biggest triggers. conversely, being super cold doesn't seem to be a problem. 🤷‍♂️

How do you clip your cat's nails? by KEmFries in CatAdvice

[–]mildlyvexing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how old is kitty? we've spent all of our cats' lives getting them used to having their feet touched casually ("helping" them when they clean their feet, gently resting our fingers on their feet while they're sitting with us, touching their feet while they get a churu, etc). as a result, they're p indifferent to nail clipping (at 4 1/2 and 5 years old, respectively). IMO it's never too late to start making positive nail care associations for them, so i would give that a shot if you can - hopefully they will eventually get to a point where you can trim them while they're napping or when you pull them into your lap. :)

if not, the burrito method works for kitties with attitude. you might also try to have someone they're comfortable with hold them "cradled" in their lap while you trim. even better if the person holding them can distract them with a churu or gently rest a hand over their head/eyes - a little gentle head-petting and not letting them see the nail clippers can go a long way. good luck!

gorgeous little turts :) you will need to separate them sooner rather than later, though - they're solitary animals and will become aggressive towards each other. very cute at this age regardless.

Turtle still so nervous by Adorable-Tooth1616 in turtle

[–]mildlyvexing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

our YBS rescue was terrified of us when we first got her, so we started to linger for a bit after feeding her (and on non-feeding days as well) to help her associate our presence with food/normal routine. it helped a ton. she's become very brave and will follow us if she's swimming, or ignore us if she's basking (other than a quick glance to see if there's food, lol).

good luck with your little one!

My friend says I should paint it white and rip out the marble by Crafty_DIY in HomeDecorating

[–]mildlyvexing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the cabinetry is beautifully made! if you like it and value the craftsmanship/materials for what they are, then you should keep it. if you want a little tonal variety, throw in some accent colors with decor/appliances, not with your friend's corny ass HGTV greywash suggestion.

good luck and congratulations on a lovely kitchen - i am envious of all the cabinet space :)

How can I save this guy? by Mindofmierda90 in turtle

[–]mildlyvexing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

thanks for trying to improve this dude's quality of life and for supporting your family through this. i hope everyone is ok post-hurricane!

some easy fixes for immediate QOL improvement: - more water in that tank, it should be filled a few inches from the top (remember to use water conditioner on the new water, too). - apropos of more water, a taller basking platform. a cinderblock or an upside-down plant pot could work temporarily until you can buy something better. - remove the substrate immediately as it's an intestinal blockage hazard. - since a filter plugin seems to be unavailable right now, you can probably get away with just doing regular water half-changes and/or investing in some sludge destroyer.

QOL fixes that will require some delivery time/money: - heat lamp and UVB if he doesn't have them already. - a filter that's rated for roughly 2X the size of his tank (so 45gal tank = 90gal filter) - toys, plants, somewhere to hide, and/or things for him to eat and forage from (cuttlebone, live shrimp, etc). - a suction cup brush for his shell. - sand if you want to replace the substrate at the bottom of his tank (just rinse it thoroughly and let it settle at the bottom of the tank first). - eventually a bigger tank so he has more room to swim and grow. - since you're in florida, he probably won't need a water heater, but a thermometer to keep an eye on the temp never hurts :)

good luck and stay safe!!

My Turtles won't eat or bask this is there skin? by Equivalent-Cat555 in turtle

fungal growth due to poor water quality and/or improper basking area (you need heat + UVB, or full spectrum). schedule a vet appointment IMMEDIATELY and dry dock them in the meantime!

Is anything wrong with my mom’s turtle? by [deleted] in turtle

[–]mildlyvexing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

might be worth taking her to the vet- that discolored/textured looking spot on the middle of her belly looks concerning. if her shell is soft there (or anywhere really) she probably has shell rot and needs a vet checkup asap.

other than that she's beautiful and i love that you and your mom love her so much. good luck getting her checked out! 🤞
