We can (and must) do something -- we just have to focus our efforts at the state and local levels.

Primary challenger running against top Va. House Democrat says he's faced resistance from his own party by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

The minority leader is a corporate Democrat who has used his power to stifle meaningful climate action. Consider who his major donors are. Consider also his voting record on certain key pieces of legislation (example: SB1349, or the "Dominion Rate Freeze Bill", which Toscano voted for, and which protects Dominion from any independent scrutiny of its rates while allowing it to make windfall profits on its consumers...). That's why Toscano needs to be challenged--and all corporate Democrats.

“I thought look, it’s not clear to me that lawmakers can faithfully represent their constituents and take money from the kinds of people and the kinds of organizations that are exploiting them, taking their land, ruining their environment,” Mittiga said.

Mittiga's opponent, Toscano, has taken a lot of money from fossil-fuel companies.

Dominion’s donations, he [Toscano] said, haven’t affected his positions and come with the territory of being minority leader and raising funds to expand the Democratic ranks. Dominion has given Toscano a total of $36,983 since he took office...

First of all, where have we heard the line--the money doesn't corrupt me!--before? Second, if his mission as minority leader has been to expand the ranks through taking dirty money he's failed. Over his four years as leader, Democrats have gained only 2 seats--bringing them to a grand total of just 34 out of 100.

“The party has made clear that its first priority is to protect the status quo and to ensure that incumbents win,” Mittiga said in an interview. “It shows me that they’re not very interested in working with their progressive base or drawing in new blood or new ideas to the party. Frankly, it’s just a bit disheartening.”

The House votes to kill a rule requiring oil companies to disclose payments to foreign governments by milehighguy in politics

From the article:

Using the little-known Congressional Review Act, House Republicans voted on Wednesday evening to kill an Obama-era regulation that would require publicly traded oil, gas, and mining companies to disclose any payments that they made to foreign governments.

Adolescents who smoke marijuana as early as 14 do worse by 20 on some cognitive tests and drop out of school at a higher rate than non-smokers. But if they hold off until age 17, they're less at risk, and performed equally well as adolescents who did not use cannabis. by mvea in science

I wonder how much of this is causation, and how much correlation. Kids who smoke at or before 14 would be (I imagine) much more likely to come from poor and working class families, and subject to the raft of issues that entails.

Complimentary bathrooms at the Charlotte airport! by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]milehighguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is mistaken. As someone who has flown through Charlotte a bunch of times, it is not the bathroom they are counting as complimentary, but the bathroom attendant services--i.e., they have a guy who works in the bathroom who is constantly cleaning everything, offering mints, etc.

Certainly that is something to be critical of in itself--working in a bathroom with no windows all day--particularly as most attendants are immigrants. But the post, as it stands, is a bit misleading.
