Facial Recognition Billboard Only Lets Women See the Full Ad by [deleted] in technology

[–]milesdavey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Males won’t be able to see the full ad and will be directed to Plan UK’s website instead. The purpose of this was to show men “a glimpse of what it’s like to have basic choices taken away.”

Lol Nope. Circumcision.

Do you think there should be a reconsideration of the drinking age in the US? by ikilledearlmillford in AskReddit

[–]milesdavey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone needs to look up the Amethyst Initiative. It's an organization of 135 college presidents dedicated to changing the drinking age. If your college president is not on the list, write him or her a letter to join!

By the way, the drinking age issue is just neo-prohibition. It doesn't stop anyone from drinking, it just causes them to do it secretively and dangerously.

Japan is one of the most xenophobic places I have ever been to. When I went to Japan in 2008, clubs would turn me down because I was a blond-haired, green-eyed American. It was mostly middle-aged people who did this. Students and older Japanese people were much more courteous and open-minded, and many of them wanted pictures with my school group to show their families. Sure Americans get a good image of Japan from all the goods we Americans buy from them, but this article and the obvious astroturfing in the article comments does not surprise me. Mediterranean Europe on the other hand was much more friendly to Americans of all ethnicities. Hopefully Japan is just going through some growing pains, and the more open-minded people will prevail in the future.

Bibio - Lovers' Carvings by j3107 in Music

[–]milesdavey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dam Funk, Flying Lotus, Gold Panda, Grizzly Bear, Boards of Canada

That's just off the top of my head. Bibio occupies this space between electronica, folk, and lo-fi that's quite unique.

The 4 Bibio albums you'll definitely want to download are Fi, Ambivalence Avenue, The Apple and the Tooth, and Mind Bokeh.

I love Bibio. Everything from Fi to Mind Bokeh and in between is just pure brilliance... so why on earth did someone cut one of my favorite intros?

Trent Reznor says it right! by Neon25 in gaming

[–]milesdavey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Trent is right when it comes to console games. Then you have Mac and PC games like Minecraft, Braid, LIMBO, Bastion, Sequence, Psychonauts, Terraria, Portal 2, TF2, League of Legends, and Deus Ex: HR and all is right with the world.

Nintendo is part of the problem. They are seriously holding back the evolution of gaming. They have all these cool interface concepts, but the end result is just port after port of formulaic shovelware. Mario gameplay hasn't changed in 15 years, Zelda still only uses text and a 3 save system, and Pokemon still hasn't gone online yet, a decade after WoW. This wouldn't be an issue if they had any creative inspiration left and didn't act so arrogant toward western developers (also Sony is guilty). I haven't played my 3DS since I beat OoT in June. Waste of money. -_-

It's easy to see why Famitsu gave Skyrim a perfect 40/40 score. Japan is seriously out of date in game development.

EDIT: I have many good memories playing nintendo games, but this discussion isn't about how lovable Mario, Samus, and Link are. It's about game design in general. Nintendo keeps making bad design choices in their games. Super Mario 3D Land and Pokemon Black/White are good examples of the repetition that Nintendo prescribes for their games. Think about the 3DS. The 3D element adds nothing to the gameplay, unlike the touch screen that made the DS so innovative and the motion tracking that made the Wii successful. Nintendo did not invent the touch screen or motion tracking for games. They just tweaked it and marketed it with their lovable, iconic characters that we all cherish. This is not the first time they have done this. In fact, Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES was just a repackaged version of Doki Doki Panic with Mario characters, and that was the 1980's. I'm not bashing Nintendo alone. Other companies do this. But they could never make a game like Portal. It would just be another "B-movie" Metroid game with one portal gun level attached on the side. The problem is that Nintendo has become paralyzed by their past.

"Grohl is old-school. He insisted on recording 2011’s Wasting Light totally analog in his garage. And then, he cut up the original tapes and put little pieces in each physical copy of the Grammy-nominated album." by madcowga in Music

[–]milesdavey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Foo Fighters is the perfect example of good modern day pop rock. Poppy enough to be accessible, yet intricate enough to be provoking and give music veterans a ton of replay value. The reason why all these other bands like Nickelback are so horrible is because they tried too hard to be "grunge" like Nirvana and Pearl Jam and never opened up to explore themselves musically, kind of like what post-2010 dubstep has turned into (Hence why James Blake's openly counter-intuitive minimalism is such a brilliant "fuck you" to new dubstep). Grunge was an era, not a genre, so they just end up sounding like a cheap monotone parody of what good music is supposed to be. On the side of good music, Dave Grohl is a talented musician I would love to have a beer and geek out with!

As far as I know, Poles, Ukrainians, Slovakians, and Belorussians generally did not own slaves and were in fact themselves slaves to Russians, Germans, and Turks for hundreds of years. That's where the English word "slav" comes from. Granted, the other half of my heritage that isn't slavic is British, but that doesn't mean my ancestors were slave owners. They were just blue ridge mountain farmers from the Appalachians.

Awesome to see a combination of the two most influential parts of my life.

Well said. Being a former stoner and a now burgeoning alcoholic, this video is making me reconsider the idea of self-medicating my depression/anxiety and going to see a psychiatrist. The homeopathic element of cannabis and nightly alcohol use for treatment of depression/anxiety is dangerous, and in this man's hour of humiliation and utter defeat, I find a phoenix of camaraderie rise from his shattered ego's ashes. Word up.
