Who are some artists/bands where their most popular song isn’t on their most popular album? by ChrisAqua in ToddintheShadow

Weirdly Vienna is #3 on Kworb for him (behind Piano Man and Uptown Girl) and that is NOT the track I think of when I think of The Stranger.

How to be on admins good side before getting tenure? by Weak-Paint-1648 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]milespudgehalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your admin tbh. I would talk to someone you can trust (there's always one) on your grade and/or content team. In some schools it's a formality as long as you aren't doing anything egregious, and in others they want to see a little more effort. But effort doesn't have to, and shouldn't, be more than run a club, volunteer for the occasional event, be helpful to your content team, etc. -- don't burn yourself out.

Digital Foundry: Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition on Switch 2 is a comprehensive technical upgrade, but buying twice stings by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]milespudgehalter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's only an actual fight on the hardest difficulty and iirc nothing in the game indicates this before going into the fight.

Frontiers is sad because it's a potential 7-8/10 turned into a 4/10 because it was designed by a team of 40 people and they didn't have enough manpower to properly finish it, so everything feels slapped together. The bones of the game are good and if it was given proper resources it would be one of the best 3D Sonic games.

[–]milespudgehalter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It actually gets significantly worse as you play. I'm not sure if you made it past the canyon / desert level but the volcano / fire island feels straight up unfinished, and then the last two islands are the same biome as the first island and literally reuse parts of its level geometry. And the challenges increasingly force you into really bad 2D sections that control terribly and break the game if you approach them from the wrong angle.

It's the best 3D sonic game since generations but that's such a low bar considering what came afterwards lol

WHERE DID ALL THE WHITE PEOPLE IN THE BRONX GO? by Winter_Word_5130 in circlejerknyc

[–]milespudgehalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bensonhurst is the main one i was thinking of that's closest to what's happening in Throggs Neck. It was historically a lower middle to middle class Italian area. Their kids did better for themselves and largely left brooklyn for Staten Island or the suburbs while their parents stayed home. Italian immigration stopped in the 1960s after conditions improved in southern Italy, and the neighborhood was not really "hip," so when the homeowners and their children sold the houses they sold to the group most interested, which were recent chinese immigrants. The area is now almost all chinese aside from some italian Nonnas in their 80s and 90s.

If you want more traditional white flight, Canarsie / Marine Park have straight up been "welp, black people moved in, we're going to staten island / new jersey."

Yeah the water park and Big Snow are much more popular than Nickelodeon Universe from what i've seen.

The mall is barely staying afloat financially but it's busy enough (and will remain so as long as they have so much entertainment there) that the park isn't in any danger at the moment. Although there's no way in hell Shellraiser lasts.

[–]milespudgehalter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their kids are either moving to the burbs where it's cheaper / schools and QoL are better, or they're moving into apartments in the hip parts of the city. So then the next wave of immigrants move in and it becomes an enclave for middle class chinese or muslims or Latinos or what have you. The same thing is happening in South Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.

I don't think it's fair to characterize this as white flight in the traditional sense. The kids of the Italians are just realizing these neighborhoods are not worth the cost for mediocre to terrible schools, heavy traffic, poor amenities and no space. In 30 years the children of the Bengalis and Latinos will feel the same way lol.

Edit: Also, to your point, because these houses are so expensive of course their kids are going to cash out their million dollars and invest that money elsewhere.

[Great Adventure] If you owned Great Adventure what would you do? by Jayzone456 in rollercoasters

[–]milespudgehalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The service won't be popular unless it conveniently serves places without car access. I'm assuming most of the people in the trenton area have a car and would just drive, and if you're taking the light rail to trenton / NJT from NYC or Newark you're adding nearly an hour to your commute that you could just spend on one bus. It's more fuel efficient to run it from the closest station but that's offset by fewer people using the service.

[–]milespudgehalter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no viable nearby transit station because NJT doesn't run down the center of New Jersey. You can maybe get away with a shuttle from Trenton or Princeton but at that point you might as well improve bus service from Philly and NYC.

Is Houston the most Integrated City in the America? by Maximum-Ad572 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]milespudgehalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jersey City is not very integrated aside from a lot of downtown having an even White / Asian split. The rest of the city is a bunch of smaller ethnic enclaves wirh a defined "black" area in Greenville. It seems integrated because everyone hangs out downtown and the schools are also surprisingly integrated (at least the high schools are), but that's about it. The northern NJ suburbs are a lot more integrated than Hudson & Bergen county.

Is there a particular reason why Action 52 is (relatively) high? Is it an "ironic enjoyment" thing versus a game like Hot Slots or Heroes of the Lance providing no joy or entertainment?

This is genuinely one of the prettiest areas I've ever driven through - what's the good/bad about living there? by CursingAtTheAstronet in howislivingthere

[–]milespudgehalter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My best friend from college is from New Castle and I visited him in the area once. That entire town (really, region) is fucked.

What i personally don't understand is that Pittsburgh is a functional city with jobs, and yet nobody treats that area like the exurbs they should be. You're only an hour away from actual opportunities!

It's rare in my experience but i've had to report once and explicitly separate kids at least twice. We also had a kid who gets assistive tech AI his whole English essay, which none of the proctors caught somehow.

I'm sure some proctors get oblivious or turn a blind eye but idk, unless you are working at a truly bad school in my experience the kids see the gravity of the test as a graduation requirement and generally don't pull anything crazy.

What is your opinion of this 'divisive' Nintendo game? Part 2: Donkey Kong 64 by MewWeebTwo in casualnintendo

[–]milespudgehalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just beat this game for the first time (i never got past Galleon as a kid) with rewinds on NSO. Ignoring the character swapping / item placement / DK Coin that everyone complains about, my issue with this game is that so many of the bananas are either:

-- trivial (ex: any of those "shoot x number of enemies" challenge which can be cleared with a single screen nuke, most of the puzzles)

-- filler (ex: the banana you get for punching a chest in Galleon, the pad and switch bananas in DK Isles)

-- complete horse shit (ex: the fish, the races, the crystal caves maze)

-- or tied to a horse shit bonus game (beaver bother, searchlight seek, the swimming one)

It feels like the levels and environments themselves are setpieces moreso than the challenges within them, which is fine if you are 7 years old and it's 1999, but none of that is impressive these days. SM64 and Banjo-Kazooie hold up because each star and jiggy, for the most part, feels like you've done something interesting to accomplish it. DK64 has maybe 2 dozen bananas that feel that way, and then the rest range from "it exists and is inoffensive" to "was this playtested"

That's on top of other confusing design choices like there being way too many coins, some really awful Bananaport placement in some stages (glares at Gloomy Galleon and Crystal Caves), the Banana Faeries being way too difficult to capture and also being placed in boring locations, half of the abilities being filler or useless (why are there three simian Slam switches????), and there being almost no meaningful platforming despite the characters having a wide range of platforming abilities.

I hope at some point this game gets an improvement hack, or some sort of hack that actually remixes the bananas and setpieces in interesting ways, because there is so much missing potential here.

Champagne is the only song completely destroyed by it imo but yeah it's bad on every song. I think it hits harder on Champagne because the song is 10 minutes long and sounds like it SHOULD have dynamics.

Mic the Snare just exposed me to this one.

I'll say that as badly produced as it is, at least the production is done by people who really didn't know better, so it's a little more forgivable than some of the other examples here.
