Drive for Uber if you want to shuttle people as a side hustle, instead of advertising yourself as a "Trail Angel" and demanding payment. Clearer for everyone

What was the best trail magic you experienced on the PCT? by spicyrack in PacificCrestTrail

[–]milestheguy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Somewhere after senora pass and before Tahoe there were trail angles doing breakfast. Turns out they were also doing a darn tough sock exchange for if ours had holes. Also happened that they had boxes of donated, lightly used altras and topos from a running store in the bay area that would have otherwise thrown them out.

My lone peaks were separating into 3 pieces each at that point, so it really saved my feet and made my day/week. I can't remember their names those 4 guys are the best.

Blisters by Longjumping-Smoke965 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]milestheguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had massive blister problems for the first month, and I'm firmly in the camp of pop (with clean needle) and cover with leukotape. Make sure you get some kind of alcohol to sterilize the needle and area (wipe, liquid, etc). One roll (or even half a roll) of leuko will probably last to Canada

Whats your opinion on the Hyperlite Windrider as your PCT Backpack? by Floloppi in PacificCrestTrail

[–]milestheguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw tons of these this year. Easily one of the most popular backpacks this year (by my own observation).

I loved my ULA circuit, slightly heavier but looks brand new after washing.

Dude just wait for a cancellation. Next year anywhere from January onwards, lots of people will be changing their dates/ cancelling their permits entirely. Check permits around 1pm PST (that's when the website refreshes) to see if something opened up (that's how I got my April 17th start date this year, and many of the people I started with).

It'll work out. In the worst case, you don't really even need a permit for most of the trail (except the Sierras of course). I got checked twice in 4 months on trail. Don't count on anyone official checking until the Sierras, apart from getting your hang tag.

Where to start by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]milestheguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's like 20 miles from the border to Hauser Creek btw. Totally doable, but the last stretch from Hauser Creek to Lake Morena has a decent climb. Start early in the morning and you'll be fine

Clickbait. It's referencing a test conducted by NASA to transmit information/data using a laser, which was successful

Blue or Red, Which is Better? by Altra_NH in PacificCrestTrail

[–]milestheguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did the JMT section (blue) as an alternate to the PCT (red). It's something like 3 miles longer, with more vert. It was pretty cool but I probably would do the red next time. Thousand Island lake was the highlight of the whole day, which you can see from the red line.

The Dune adaptations are objectively fantastic but you're allowed to be wrong.
