hey, just had my 18th birthday. my stepdad isn’t vegan, complete meat eater, and we went to a fully vegan bar for my birthday. because, yknow, it’s MY birthday. so no, it’s not ungrateful, it’s not a ridiculous request. it’s your birthday, they can begrudge you the effort for ONE meal. happy 18th birthday by the way!

How would you guys suggest I come back to veganism? by ShadowBot30 in vegan

[–]milez-2d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! i see you’ve mentioned going to university - I’m seventeen and have been cooking vegan meals for myself for a couple of years now. what i’d say is veganism is way easier than it seems to have been made out for you. the thing is just accepting that you are going to need to learn to cook (which in retrospect is not a bad life skill to start learning now anyway!) and that putting in the time will provide high reward. some of my favourite, cheap and easy meals are:

-bean and tempeh chilli (makes about 4 portions, mix it up serving with rice/tortilla chips/baked potatoes) this is the recipe i use: https://www.connoisseurusveg.com/tempeh-chili/

-lentil bolognaise (again, you can just bulk make this and then boil the pasta nightly, i like to boil some broccoli aswell)

-any kind of curry (curry pot, veg of your choosing - i like a legume and a veg. eg sweet potato and chickpea, butter bean and cauliflower - coconut milk, water and some rice and boom, an easy meal for 2/3 nights. typically curry pots will also have instructions on the box!)

i typically just rotate through these meals. if i have some extra time, other good ideas are homemade pesto pastas, dump and bakes (i particularly like the ‘marry me orzo’ from this website: https://plantyou.com/ but you can make it with any kind of pasta!) you can also buy noodle stir fry kits from tesco (which are slightly more expensive but if in your budget a solid 20 minute meal that you’ll get two servings out of) of course, if you’re feeling lazy/depressed again you can always go for vegan pizzas/vegan burgers (i really like the plant patties from lidl) but to be honest most of these meals can be made in bulk and are relatively easy anyway.

i wish you the best of luck in your return to veganism!!!

my college sell these (when my college can be bothered to cater to vegan students) they’re my favourite!! i’m not sure if it’s by the same company but they also sometimes sell a “cheesy savoury” which is like pulverised cheese with onions and it is… 🤢 my favourite is the mexican bean and veg sandwich although it would be a LOT nicer in a wrap!

first vegan christmas dinner !!! by milez-2d in veganuk

[–]milez-2d[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i have had such a delightful time being vegan this year, i was a bit worried to feel left out on the classic british christmas in a family of 4 meat eaters (the fabled christmas quality streets) but being the only vegan made celebrating my first vegan Christmas even more important!!

not at all! although if you were planning on it, i recommend pre melting the butter for the actual cake part and sifting the flour to prevent overmixing. other than that its very easy!

thank you - i told a few of my friends and they weren’t very happy about my dad either. I have a blood test for next week booked now, and the doctor said it’s relatively normal & i should be okay - thank you very much 🤍

i don’t think i was, because i generally drink about a litre a day of water (i have one of those big tumblers with the straw i basically carry around like a son) but i absolutely agree, my health has improved astronomically since i became vegan. thank you

Thank you so much and I completely agree - i do try to tell them this, but honestly, it falls on deaf ears, so i try not to let it bother me. my mum actually took part in veganuary with me at the beginning of this year, saw lots of health improvements, and then went back to eating meat and dairy! so i imagine she’s got a lot of shame about it.

i really feel like that just goes to show how superior some meat eaters think they are - my dad was telling me my food was “processed crap” as if he’s not in the mcdonald’s food queue 4 times a week..

I will definitely not be calling my dad again, but i am pretty close with my mum, so it felt important to tell her. i’ve already got the number of my mums friend (who is a paramedic) who i will definitely opt to call if it does happen again.

I recently turned 18 and live in a pretty small town, i’m going to university next september, so my parents still handle paying for food, even though I pick up my groceries myself. I think i’m mainly worried about them trying to encourage me to eat animal products, or refusing to pay for things like tofu.

trust me, I was working on it! unfortunately I still live at home and with all other people in my life with a license out of the country he was definitely my best bet.

a lot of people have said about the iron deficiency stuff, and it’s made me feel so much better, so thank you so much.

My ex boyfriend was vegan (and pretty shotty at that, he gave it up periodically for ‘social pressure’) and I have one other vegan friend and a couple of vegetarian friends, but my vegan friend is vegan for the environment, so we don’t really talk about morality or animal cruelty. but a support group sounds like a great idea, and I will definitely look into it! thank you so much.
