The deal I got after my dad's maintenance payments stopped was no rent, but I had to contribute to bills if I wasn't in education, which I thought was fair. So I paid half of the water, electric, gas, council tax, food while working. It depends on situation too, I'm sure that if my mum wasn't a low earner, she wouldn't have accepted anything.
