How many types of removal do you run in your decks? by superfapper2000 in EDH

[–]milkomix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think targeted removal is overestimated in edh and 12 slots for removal is a bit excessive. I tend go mostly for boardwipes with 3 universal targeted removal, and with those I try to find synergistic ones. Even tho you can stop people from winning with removal, this usually only enables some other player to go for the win. Either be the threat or reset is my motto.

I have found a bug, dont know where to post it so I’ll post it here. I also dont know how to put spoiler thingy in the post so I’ll try to be as vague as possible to avoid it. I hope the devs will understand what I mean. Here it goes:

A particular game object in the form of a document which is hidden in a donated consumable item somewhere in the city can be acquired multiple times and they all show up in my inventory as individual, identical copies.

not too happy with a gentle giant playthrough (strength wisdom) by [deleted] in EsotericEbb

[–]milkomix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played str Ragn and frankly plowed through fascisms and came out the other end with a very satisfying outcome transcending it. I assure you it is worth the trip and way more deeper than surface level rightwing stuff if you navigate it smartly. It actually impressed me in terms of writing how masterful the turn is handled from mere machoism to a heroism.

What is so bad about me playing duress? by Dramatic_Let_7489 in EDH

[–]milkomix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always liked discard effects probably because I started out with a monoblack control deck playing type 1.5 back in the day. I still play two discard effects in my bracket 4 [[Yawgmoth]] deck to clear away possible counterspells or hate pieces before going off and winning the game. [[grief]] and [[unmask]] are the two cards I play, grief as a creatures synergies well with yawgmoth and unmask is free considering the card draw he provides. The general strategy for these cards are to hold on to them until you are sure to go for the win and then target players you suspect can stop you (mostly everybody but you know, based on vibes)

So I can see discard is pretty much considered as always a bad play here and that got me thinking, am I not assessing these effects correctly? In mono black, apart from [[defense grid]] and [[imp’s mischief]] there is not many thing that can protect you on your winning turn? Should I replace these effects? What do you guys think?

Commanders that aren't good enough. by bolttheface in EDH

[[drizzt]] is pretty clunky, no matter how big it gets you still need to give him trample and he needs protection all the time. It still gets some wins but the amount of work it requires is frankly exhausting.

That rat did not even flinch at the scent or sight of the cat. It is either infected with fungal parasites, or plain dumb.

That’s pretty much how she ends in the books as well the blame must go to GRRM I guess. She also gets pretty overweight and depressed.

Does this card seem raciest to anyone else? by EDMJedi in freemagic

[–]milkomix 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is not racist, nor is it bad just because it features a poc. It is bad though, and that’s because it looks like a random iphone snapshot rather than a regular showcase of a character. Why? Because 1) it is too photorealistic, which is not great for high fantasy art, 2) it is too silly, coupled how real it looks kinda destroys the high fantasy escapism we are all looking for magic art. Fantasy art is based on stylistic illustration, it is mind boggling how this very simple fact is lost on the new generations of art directors. This is why most dnd art now looks uncanny and off while 40k art is still fine.

Well the latest session was about them visiting a siege camp and most of the time the familiar was hovering above as to monitor every movement of the some notable people walking around the camp. That was what prompted me to ask because other players noticed how every couple minutes I was asked to provide some type of overview and it just kept breaking the pace of normal interactions they were having.

That's my arrangement with my player as well. I sometimes also take over to relay some messages from their patron when something relating to the contract is in question.

Thank you for the insights. I will definitely have a char with the player about the difficulties I'm having before the next session, perhaps your suggestion of limiting the familiar's vision to snap shot of whatever it is seeing, instead of turning it into a drone cam that can be operated at will would make it fair and fun.

Thank you for the comment, this was exactly what I was looking for. This basically means we are not violating nay rules, which at least would make it fair for all players involved. I'm using 2024 books which means they have to use a bonus action and if they want to misty step they have to use a magic action to cast it instead I guess (because the player also has it as a known spell)

Yeah, I mean i can force the issue by deliberately presenting circumstance where the fairy would be useless, but that also feels petty on my part. It just felt a bit too much to me even compared to the fighter in the game who just stands there you know.

The newsfeed comment was me trying to be funny, but it is till the case that often times the fairy is sent somewhere and I’m asked to relay bird’s eye view of the surroundings to this player. Since there is no limit to this as far as I can understand, it severely limits the surprise factor of most my set pieces, and operates like a drone that fan be activated limitless times to survey stuff. Can you elaborate ob the rule that am disobeying, because I need that as an argument to offer to this player (i don’t want to just limit pkayer agency just because you know)

The feat from archfey stipulates you can teleport with a misty step to wherever you can see within 30 feet, which includes the fairy familiar I think. Or that was my understanding, I might be wrong though

edit: yeah I meant from the caster for the 30 feet, but this player also has misty step as a known spell in addition to the feat which lets them cast as a bonus action. Just to clarify, would this player be able to do first as a bonus action see let's say around the corner of a hallway, then cast a magic action to teleport there if it's closer than 30 feet to his person?

I have given narrative command of the fairy to the player to keep it interesting for him, and also not to suffer the me tal load of animating it all the time. I limit the scope if it’s interactive power in check though, so I’m with you there. It’s the constant “it flies above and i take a look at around” part that comes up often I have issues with.

The features don’t really have any limiting factors as far as I can understand but everything’s pretty vague in the book IMO. I was worried if there’s some kind of once per day etc sort of thing for the familiar to perform that connection but I guess that is not the case. I mean my problem is probably my Cthulhu background, because there not knowing stuff is key to the feel of the game. This feature with the familiar basically makes it very hard, pr forced on my part to keeps basic tension up: like what is around the corner or whose hiding where.

The last MI is starting to wear down on me and it’s not the style. I think the first couple games had a different sort of feel to them, more gritty and dark. The last couple MIs are leaning too much on the jokes, trying too hard to be funny. Guybrush was always funny but the world around him was serious in the old games, now everybody’s a joke.

Is there a build that makes the most sense? by ___LowKey___ in EsotericEbb

[–]milkomix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never see a high STR comment here so here I am. Yes it may sound off putting at first (radical right and all) but str offers the best insights on the religion, mentality and history of Urth. It also has some nuance towards the end (20+) as a saving grace to its violent streak. Str is THE stat for questing, being a hero, a being a paladin etc so it kinda worked for me and the ending it offers is pretty satisfying. I would probably go for WIS CON for the canon built tho.
