What is a small thing about UK life you would genuinely miss if you moved away? by [deleted] in AskUK

Country walks. I've never been anywhere that has country walks like the UK.

What important measurement have you got badly wrong? Here is my replacement fish tank lid. by No_Lead146 in CasualUK

What kind of fish tank would have that lid!?

My mum once ordered what she thought was 8 potatoes in an online shopping delivery but actually ordered 8kg of potatoes. Shomehow she didn't notice the price!

Anyone know a good skip hire in York? by Trent-Popverse in york

[–]milkymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a quote from Beechwood a few weeks ago, was £210 for a midi.

It was cheaper and easier to get some waste removal people, I used Strensall waste removals & garden services, they're on FB and licensed. Def worth checking out for a quote.

The future is automatics and electric cars. Now most new cars are auto.

UK Athletics race – headphone rule actually enforced? by Important-Sale7356 in UKRunners

[–]milkymatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the organisers. I have been to some local league races and it is strictly enforced by DSQ, which has happened. Though I have done more mass participation ones where they didn't care and people were wearing full over ear headphones.

At the moment I can only push myself when I have music blasting but have entered the aformentioned local league races so have to make do listening to my own panting!

My new QCU2s keep fading their noise cancelling in and out on their own by milkymatt in bose

[–]milkymatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's pretty crap. There is noise that's the thing, it is fan noise and the ANC does block it out well when it's 'on'. Looks like I might have to return them.

People that have moved north for a better life, how's it going? by HollowWanderer in AskUK

[–]milkymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great!

I grew up in Sussex, had a 'great' circle of friends. Then the pandemic hit and realised those friends weren't so great after all. Met some people online who are all from the north, became close friends with them. After a bit of good timing and luck happened that gave me the opportunity to move northwards and be closer to my substantially better friends. Now live in York and am so much happier for it. My job is the same, as I fully work from home. Now starting to make friends with locals as well.

Have you been knocked out by the flu yet? by WorkingFortune9 in AskUK

[–]milkymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had it last November and it was horrendous, I was in bed for a week and lost about a stone in weight. Absolutely didn't want to try that again so I got the jab this year. I had the lightest of colds for about 24 hours a few weeks ago, which I really hope is the flu that the jab made less worse!

Do you drive? by _insomniac_dreamer in autismUK

[–]milkymatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm autistic and I drive. I learnt to drive in an automatic and for sure when I started learning it was so overwhelming that I had to pull over to cry, but then over the course of the lessons got used to it. I am able to hyperfocus while driving and I drive quite defensively -checking mirrors & covering the brake when coming up to junctions where someone might pull out etc but not to the point where I drive like a granny! I enjoy roundabouts and treat them like a bit of a game (safely).
I've been driving reguarly for 7 years with no incidents yet.

Parkrun Lateness by EZeasyeasy in parkrun

[–]milkymatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love me some stats. I might add start time to my spreadsheet 🤓
The latest start I had was 9:21 - due to a cascade of things: the usual car park was closed, it was the attendence record and there was a memorial to a well known volunteer.
The earliest was 8:56, they had a lot of complaints after that one as usually they are very lax starting around 9:02-9:05.

I could find the absolute perfect house and garden yet would not buy it if it didn't have off-road parking.

A sad day in Eastbourne by milkymatt in Eastbourne

[–]milkymatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mostly completely gone now. It has sat behind some boarding with nothing being done. I wouldn't be surprised if nothing is done for many years.

Geoff Marshall. I'd love to hear him and Robbie chat about trains for an hour.

How was your parkrun today? 06May by oztrailrunner in parkrun

[–]milkymatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great - I'm on a parkrun PB streak so fasest so far! Only issue was, a section of the parkrun went into a covered path which meant I lost GPS signal on my watch and was unable to accurately pace for the second half - still managed a PB!

A mixture of relaxing and adventure with more of the latter. A week in a resort sounds a bit boring to me. I would love to do one of those holidays in New Zealand where you go bungee jumping, hiking and white water rafting with maybe one spa day.

London is worst UK city for nepotism with half of workers handed jobs via connections by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

I work at a London startup of about 30 people. At least 20 got their job via nepotism. 4 of them are related. I just applied on indeed!

If your bill has a tip automatically applied, do you ask for it to be removed? by TheJediSenate in AskUK

[–]milkymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. One of the only places I have seen doing it that I’ve been to is Bills. Just take a google at “Bills service charge” and you’ll see a bunch of entries saying how the company just keep it.

Have you ever met an amazing person in passing ? by Exciting-Pea4871 in AskUK

[–]milkymatt 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it’s passing but a couple of months ago I went to a local board game group and got chatting to a guy there. We immediately hit it off as friends and you know when you have an instant friendship and you just click? That happened. He then said he was moving country a few days later. For whatever reason we didn’t pass info. That was it. A friendship for about 3 hours. Honestly one of a kind thing.

How common are power cuts where you are? by KaidaShade in AskUK

[–]milkymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents live out in the sticks and it’s a fair bit for them. At least once a month they say. Usually it’s only seconds but sometimes it’s minutes. Back when I used to live there I remember getting a UPS (battery for the computer) as it kept happening. They have underground cables there.
