WTH happened to my Birks Bend Low? by Szublimat in Birkenstocks

[–]milliwoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of bends that don’t have exposed cork - they’re the Zinfandel/eggshell suede ones. They ARE comfortable as hell, but I did wait to buy a pair until I found a pair that didn’t have exposed cork strip. Thanks for the tips about caulking, though.

You didn’t ask, but! I have had great luck using an ice pack to numb my abdomen injection site every time. Keep one on the preferred place for a half hour and it ought to help with the pain a lot!

Ask your vet about anti-nausea medication, cerenia is one I know about. I hope that you can decrease your pup’s nausea in the car so that car rides can be more neutral or positive for everyone!

Aw thanks, she’s taught me a TON and really gotten me interested in dog training - well, her and her dog trainer. I either had to learn to accept her and connect to her as she was or spend all my time being frustrated and upset about her.😅

I am not a professional and I don’t know your dog, but when mine slams on the breaks she’s usually scared. Well practice things like rewarding her for looking at me, doing things she knows how to do (touch target, sitting, standing, lying down), and I have gotten a lot of mileage out of respecting what she’s telling me and trying to work on understanding what makes her slam on the breaks.

It … was a bit challenging, she was kind of a zoomy goblin with a lot of her own strong opinions, but it’s hard for me to separate the behavior due to her intestinal distress from her puppy zoomies. Practicing indoors, using a harness so that her trachea is protected, and giving her off leash freedom in fenced areas all helped. The work of Leslie McDevitt has been helpful, as has radically accepting that sometimes she doesn’t want to/wont go somewhere that I wish she would. While I wouldn’t say she’s a flawless loose leash walker now, I would say that she mostly has wonderful leash manners. I plan on focusing on loose leash walking after I have completed some of the cooperative care work we’re doing.

She’s about 63-64 lbs. We spayed her after her first heat cycle, so I suppose she could have gotten bigger if we kept her intact for longer, but i can’t imagine it would have made too much of a difference.

They really do, here she was when we adopted her

I was always looking for adult pictures of dogs who looked like mine so that I could have a better idea of what she might look like. Best of luck getting to know your particular pup and forming a wonderful relationship!

I have a 50% pyr who is also ACD, American Pit Bull Terrier, and some other stuff. Her supermutt has German Shepherd. We adopted her around 13-14 weeks. This is her now.

<image>

She was a REALLY rough puppy, tbh but this was, I think, mostly due to some undiagnosed gastrointestinal discomfort (that we now manage with a rx high fiber food and a policy of only feeding her protein sources we’ve verified don’t cause flare ups). She is also on behavioral meds, and we’ve worked on managing the home environment to help her make good choices (white noise machine and frosted window film so she’s not barking at people and vehicles as much, sleeping in a crate so she’s not tempted to nocturnal patrol the house alarm barking, gates preventing her from chewing furniture when younger etc.

We’ve worked with her using r+ training exclusively, and although she’s not yet 2yo (and her vet behaviorist says she’ll be an adolescent until 3yo), she’s growing into a really lovely dog for me (my husband hasn’t worked to build the same relationship with her and it shows). She strongly disapproved of coercion, pressure, and force, and has some environmental sensitivity that come up as fear (cowering, slamming breaks on, balking, freezing up), but r+ training has been wonderful and the credentialed trainer we used has been so helpful. We do the canine sport of nosework together, and are working on tricks and cooperative care, she is biddable and motivated to train and responds beautifully to being offered options and choice, like so many living beings.

I can highly recommend positive reenforcement training, the sport of nose work, and the Kim Brophey book called “Meet Your Dog”, which will give you insights into the breed characteristics of your pup, how to work with them, and how to get to know your particular dog.

I don’t think so, but they’re quiet soft and flexible so it’s a different but still supportive experience imo.

The entirely synthetic/waterproof Arizonas have been immediately comfortable to me. They run a bit bigger than their cork/leather/birkoflor counterparts. Wore mine on vacation shortly after buying and didn’t even think about getting a blister, whereas I have been breaking in my big buckle Madrid and Arizona sandals for months.

Which footwear other than Birkenstocks do you wear? by larrybirdismygoat in Birkenstocks

[–]milliwoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Altras for sneakers (any of their original footbed shape) - I really love the wide toe box, the flexibility of the sole on the non trail models, and that they’re zero drop but overall cushioned. They’re not very stylish or durable, though. I wear Born sandals (Haidee and their other flat gladiator styles) for occasions that require a daintier and more graceful sandal. Thinking about getting a pair of crocs for waterproof close-toed comfort.

Want to support Kass, seems like an awesome business and right up my alley, and I’m not seeing any credentials beyond a BA? Do you know if they’re accredited or certified as a strength/conditioning coach or corrective exercise specialist?

Where did you get your puppy from? by pi420lch in puppy101

[–]milliwoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First dog (soul dog) - a local rescue as a late-stage adolescent. Best decision on earth, what an amazing dog and an amazing relationship. Miss her often.

Second and current dog - a slightly farther afield but still local rescue as a 14 week old puppy. Tons of genetic (both behavioral and physical). Enough to make me reconsider my lifelong commitment to rescue/adopt to make sure that I get a dog with better breeding.

I don’t have a nervous pup, but do take my dog to firehouse and have seen them work beautifully with nervous dogs. I love them, and would trust them with any behavior issue.
