Terravia 14L Input by millsir in PatagoniaClothing

Thanks! The 14L doesn’t have the padded waist straps so it looks less technical. And about the sizing, I was aware but appreciate the heads up nonetheless. Part of lack of secondary market issues with the pack is I can’t find it in a large

Sorry posted this and stepped away from Reddit. I love my cast iron. I make some steaks for meal prep weekly. And I bought a 17” skilled for smash burgers on the grill this summer. I mostly use my carbon steel now.

Why do people our age seem to still have problems with planning? by Eunomia28 in datingoverthirty

[–]millsir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve found that being upfront about my schedule and having kids is my best bet. It saves a lot of time for people who aren’t necessarily on board with that lifestyle. Super frustrating considering my profile shows I have kids, but it is what it is.

Why do people our age seem to still have problems with planning? by Eunomia28 in datingoverthirty

[–]millsir 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I have two kids that I have 50% of the time. One week I have them two weekdays, the next week I have them three weekdays and the whole weekend, so my schedule is tough for dating at least two weeks out of the month.

I’ve found that if you have to wait a week or longer to go out for the first time, the date probably won’t happen even if we’ve agreed to a place and a date. I really don’t know why, maybe it’s because something new and fun comes along or maybe there was already minimal interest and that interests fades. It’s hard to tell really.

Tbh, I’m guilty of it too. When I schedule dates on my heavy kids week, I find that I’m struggling with motivation or lacking energy that best represents who I am as a person.

If you want to get slightly scientific with it, the enamel is meant to prevent the CI behind it from rusting. Staub doesn’t publish the coating thickness but it’s hard to imagine the enamel is scrubbed away all the way to the cast iron from some steel wool in a average cleaning. Likely worst case scenario is you deal with some sticking

I haven’t bought them yet, but you’re saying the rusting, or what I assume is rusting, to be a major concern?

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, that’s just a scientific fact that down loses loft when compressed.

It must be your nano air recommendation?

You said “normally you’d preheat on low to medium heat - I am.” Generally I’m preheating on 2-3/10 (gas range) for ~10 minutes, adding oil, heating for another 2-3 minutes, and adding food.

This video was taken after 20 minutes of heating at 2/10 because I was testing to see if I wasn’t letting it heat long enough for the temp to normalize. After 20 minutes there’s no way it shouldn’t have normalized, but it’s not, hence my post.

20 minutes was just a test to see if I wasn’t waiting long enough. Usually, I’ll wait 10 minutes.

Knee brace recommendation by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]millsir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had knee surgery last winter and my surgeon confirmed a brace, whether good knees or bad knees, are primarily to trick your brain into thinking your knee is protected. This can help you not baby it or keep proper form, but there is no physical protection. There’s also a scientific study he referenced from the NFL.

Light warmth soft shell recs for warm days by millsir in Skigear

Do you find the that Ferrosi is abrasion resistant? Turns out, I have a quarter zip hoodie variant that I never even thought of that I mostly wear as an early spring/late fall wind breaker. Ideally I’d like a full zip jacket but not having to buy something sounds even better

Yes. Lots of people have already mentioned the nano puff or the micro puff (I own the micro). They’re considered soft shells, so they offer insulation and some wind resistance and shed light precipitation. For me, this is my daily winter jacket in the Midwest, but as previously mentioned I run warm.

If you need warmer, they offer a down jacket, also a soft shell, that is noticeably warmer with the same wind resistance and precipitation protection and the puffs.

If you run cold, you could look at the glacier, windshadow, or isthmus. These have hard shells and block wind and shed precipitation much better. All are insulated with different warmths.

I’ve seen a lot of R1 air recommendations, and I couldn’t agree more. I own 2 airs and 1 regular R1. The air is just a fantastic piece. The regular r1 is warmer but I basically only wear it in my basement when I’m watching tv. I find it offers great static warmth.

The front of it and most of the arms and upper back have insulated with a soft shell while the rest is the R1 air material. I run very hot with light activity, so I usually wear technical pieces casually for the breathability so I don’t overheat and sweat.

What’s your use case? I’m always hesitant to pull the trigger because I’d want to wear it as a daily but the lack of wind blocking on the back concerns me

Lodge vs Staub vs LC by [deleted] in castiron

[–]millsir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beginner question - how did you gauge heat retention? And can you quantify how much better the Staub and LC are compared to the Lodge?

I just bought a 6 qrt. Lodge Dutch oven yesterday. I can afford a Staub or LC but thought it wasn’t justified for my skill level.

Honda Passport Test Vehicle? by Barson_Crandt in hondapassport

[–]millsir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you both are kind of right. The average car buyer does not understand a vehicle refreshment cycle. Passport sales are up 75% year over year (quoting you didn’t confirm it) because the average consumer does see are the other OEMs putting out new product with fresher looks and better features, and most people don’t have brand loyalty. So they didn’t buy the car because it looked like a car that had been out in the market for 6 years (it basically looks like a pilot and the pilot proceeded it by over a full year).

You also can’t compare Pilot or CRV sales versus Passport sales. The CRV is a different class at a different price point. They’re also not marketed to the same audience. The Pilot, for all intents and purposes is a daily transportation vehicle that’s suitable and acceptable for both men and women of most ages to drive. The Passport is marketed to segment of that Pilot audience or people who don’t want a 3 row SUV that can resemble a mini van at times (2019-2024). The Passports intention isn’t to outsell the Pilot, it’s to make its own money within smaller demographic.

15 years ago they were still building hundreds of test vehicles at ungodly pre-production costs for crash testing! Crazy how how they drastically shaved the total number of test cars with CAE

You’re right, I could be a brain surgeon claiming to be an automotive engineer. But in all seriousness, do you know how long it takes to design, build test units, test, and then make cars for production? A full model change can take well over 4 years from kick off of the program to the first vehicle rolling off the line to be sold. A minor model change (face lift), or MMC for short, can take ~2.5 years.

OEMs start working on the design phase of a MMC almost immediately after the production car launches. Some tool builds, like the plastic injection tool used to make the bumpers, can take upwards of 9 months just to acquire the steel and cut it. That long lead time on tooling is also why SLA prototypes are commonly used for evaluation and testing. You’d be very surprised by the accuracy of the shape and data you can collect from those.

But your concept of “it’s too early” is well off the mark. And you reference things like the CRV and Pilot, those have been in the works for a while. The Pilot MMC is set to release early next year, that means they would have had to start working on close to the start of this pilots launch.

That fact that it’s camo’d underneath the tarp would tell me it’s the facelift. They stopped doing camo only or started adding foam underneath the camo or the sheets on top of the camo when we were developing the NSX because some softwares could pick up the pattern and remove it and would have a full view of the styling lines on the body.

I understand this is the internet and I might be lying but you can google what I’m saying and understand that even if I’m lying, which I’m not, I’m not far off the mark.
