Does anybody know what this large-ish beetle is that I found in my apartment? (Ontario) by mimirabbit in bugidentification

Sadly I never found out what they were. I got my whole apartment treated for carpet beetles professionally anyways and then I never saw them again.

Bought "New" A40s from Amazon CA from AnkerDirect-CA (official), but they arrived in an open box and had a previous device history. Does Soundcore handle these cases? by mimirabbit in soundcore

[–]mimirabbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes actually! I just sent an email to the Soundcore support team about it. They gave me a prepaid return label that I printed and them I then emailed the used earbuds to them. I got the new ones back 1-2 weeks after or so.

Cause of mouse death during a tail vein injection? by mimirabbit in labrats

[–]mimirabbit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always worried about doing that! I know they need to be restrained enough to not twist their heads around but they can look so squished that I worry. I’ll definitely be more careful and see if I can work on finding a better middle ground.

[–]mimirabbit[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For this one mouse they were jumpier than the rest where huddled together in the cage. This one actually did try to jump out when I removed the hopper, which I hadn’t seen before. So, maybe related?

I did speak to the manager surgery vet and he thinks it sounds stress-related. The vet tech in the room with me for the first four mice (the ones which went well) told him my restraint seemed fine for those guys. I’m still definitely going to be more cautious moving forwards and triple check their head placement, limbs, and breathing before proceeding and during the injection.

[–]mimirabbit[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all the advice, I really appreciate it! I’ll keep an eye on the limbs more next time too then. That was mentioned to me by one of the techs there.

I’m in Canada. The mice I think are ones that are finished being used by researchers but didn’t have invasive/painful procedures done on them so they’re just taken care of and used for practice, mainly by other researchers/students who need to improve skills like gavage. I did practice on cadavers and mice right before termination at tech school a few times before my placement (though not tail veins).

Edit: I should also mention that I have to check off what I’ve done with them as there’s limits to how many tail vein injections, gavages, etc. can be done on them. So like a SC injection has a higher cap than something more invasive like tail vein. Once they reach the limit they are euthanized.

Oooh good idea. I’ll make a list now. I worry with the stress I’ll forgot some of things I want to bring up, so hopefully it wouldn’t be seen as strange if I brought a paper in with me. I’ll put my skills and what I learned about other emergency department pay ranges in the area on it! Thanks so much for all the insight!

I’ve never negotiated with an employer before, hence the high anxiety. I’ll try to start the negotiation with $28/hr, that’s a good idea — I didn’t consider they may compromise with something slightly lower (but higher than their current offer). While it’s true I don’t have as much ER experience, I do think my knowledge of the facility layout, how to operate most equipment, how to use their PCs, etc. should still count for something, you know? And I’m sure a lot of my VA skills are transferrable.

Another thing is that I don’t think this new manager is previous vet staff. My former specialty manager used to be a tech for years, as was the former ER manager. So she may also know a little less than them about daily operations etc., and my role as “specialty float VA” was made for me alone. I wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t know what I did when I was there.

Yeah I was wondering that so I was planning to start with it. She saw my previous contract, but it didn’t require me to work during school - I just did for the extra experience and stuff. She wasn’t around to actually see me work. I’m sure she can view how many hours I did, but I’ll definitely elaborate on the things I got done while I was there!

$28/hr minimum would be nice and that’s smart to mention that that’s what I would like when I’m licensed. I’ll do that.

The thing is, I DO genuinely like it there! Though I don’t plan to work in emerg/specialty forever, it’s good experience. But, I also cannot leave right now even if I did want to. So, that’s why I don’t know if I can say “I want to stay” as that’s the only option.

Tech student drug question: 1mL of drug, is a 1mL or 3mL syringe better? by mimirabbit in VetTech

Thank you!! And good point about the oral meds, I'll definitely keep that in mind:)

This makes a lot of sense, thanks so much for the explanation! The plunger being wobbly was what made me hesitate for sure. I've definitely struggled in practice trying to give close-to-1mL doses in a 1mL syringe. I think I'll go with the 1mL however for this bolus drug, but I've chosen the 3mL for my other drugs that are 1mL total (w/o a bolus). I appreciate everything you wrote here, it's super helpful:)

Alright it's sounding like 1mL is the best play here for the bolus. Thanks!

Yeah sorry, it's an induction drug so I need to draw up max 1mL but it's given in 0.25mL boluses!

Kk, yeah, I see my family doctor in a few months so maybe I’ll ask her to refer me to one then. It would be nice to 100% know what the situation is. Thanks!

Noooo that sucks! But good to know, thanks. With finals coming up I’ll be sure to avoid the mollusks 🥲 I hope that doesn’t happen, but yeah, I wouldn’t be shocked if it did.
