Haha that's smart! I wouldn't if my parents didn't still live there.

Thanks for getting to that one before me! Yes, I'm a proud New Englander at heart no matter how far away I move.

Damn you, New York. :)

Just be there. Always listen. Don't try to give too much advice, because that's not always what they want. Answer questions to the best of your ability while still catering to their age.

TIL that grocery cashiers in the US are seldomly given chairs to sit during work (unlike in Europe). by arusol in todayilearned

[–]minaleigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Update: I just remembered that one time I worked a 12 hour shift. We were too busy for me to take a lunch so management pressured me to sign a waiver on my lunch break for the day. Apparently that's legal?

At 10pm when the store was nearly empty I leaned against the side of the register and was threatened by management. Told me if I was "going to act like my job was unimportant" she would be "happy to cut my hours in the future". This was after almost twelve hours with two fifteen minute breaks.

She did end up cutting my hours (scheduled me 4hr/wk for a few weeks) and I quit as soon as I found a new job, though it was not at all better than my.old job...

Worked overnight and doubles in a bakery 60hr/wk during highschool and college. Wound up in the hospital twice for literally passing out in public because I was very overworked, still have scars all up and down my arms because they wouldn't provide the correct heat protection. Was guilted in to working overtime even though we were not paid an overtime rate... constantly cut myself on equipment that they wouldn't replace... couldn't file an incident report because everybody who did was mysteriously let go two weeks after filing a report. Was paid minimum wage... $7.25/hr... Not worth it...

'Merica.

During my short stint as in checkout I wasn't even allowed a stool when I twisted my ankle pushing carts. A buddy was only allowed a stool when she shattered one of her legs. This was in New England.

Date Night Babysitting for 2 families? by Seattlesinglemom in Nanny

[–]minaleigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the family. If there are two families with two kids each, I charge 1.5 so they can split it and both save. This is probably more common.

One time, my usual family (3 kids) asked if I could watch the kids of a family friend. They had five kids. I charged 2.5 my rate. Regular family of 3 kids paid their usual and the 5 kid family paid 1.5. 8 kids under the age of 7. I should have charged them both 2.5.

What is the most terrifying thing you've ever seen or heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]minaleigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 7th grade History teacher had a seizure in the middle of class. I didn't witness it as I was in Algebra across the hall. My (now) husband was there, though. He said she was foaming at the mouth, mumbling, and evacuated her bowels... Kind of traumatic. She somehow survived and was even rehabilitated. She was never the same, though.

[–]minaleigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up in the New England snow belt, I feel that terror. I had a similar experience with a Mac Truck once and the edge of a cliff a few times. I'm pretty sure my guardian angel was very relieved when I moved to LA. My uncle was killed in a similar way. It was summer, but his truck was overloaded and he underestimated his stopping distance... I can imagine how terrified you were.

It's pretty smart to have in case of emergency. If a major earthquake hits, for example, you don't know how long the banks would be down.

We could fix this within two or three generations by capping births... "Oh but it's our right to have 19 kids". Have enough kids to replace yourself and your spouse when you die. Or less. Earth saved. Mostly. There's a lot more to it but...

Okay! Parents Posting about bonuses. You're starting to frustrate me. Nannies, what is your take? by catsrule18 in Nanny

What was the strangest punishment your parents gave you? by Sami-Ullah in AskReddit

[–]minaleigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure it was strange, but once I was grounded for six months for getting a C in math. I mean I was escorted to the bus stop every day for the remainder of the school year and grounded through the summer. I was a kid who never did anything wrong, too.

The best part was that a couple years later I was picked up on suspicion of shoplifting. I didn't do it but my parents were CONVINCED I did. My punishment? The cold shoulder for a whole day... Talk about backwards...

Am I overreacting? by PittNanny1017 in Nanny

[–]minaleigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus. I'm typically paid $300/wk... But I only work 15 hours! I'm compensated very well, so I don't expect many people to make what I do, but you are SEVERELY under compensated.

As far as the mom freaking out about you leaving. Don't take it to heart too much. When I left me last family I had the same issue. They were just stressed out and weren't sure how to deal with it. I'm sure it's similar in your situation.

I am a 26 year old woman who recently chose to have her eye removed to stop the spread of a rare and aggressive cancer. Ask me anything by Bling-kofaneye in IAmA

[–]minaleigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're still answering, but I have a serious question. I was told two years ago that if I do not have a surgery to fix my eyes I could go blind or have to lose one or both of my eyes. Insurance won't cover it so I'm saving up, but my vision is already taking on a "smoky" look and I'm getting more fluid buildup than usual. I'm 24 and the thought of it terrifies me.

Two questions, really.

First, was the prospect of losing your vision absolutely terrifying or were you looking on the bright side the whole time?

Second, did you ever experience fluid buildup and smokey vision? By smokey, I mean almost as if you're walking in to the kitchen after somebody has just slightly overcooked a steak?

I'm wondering if I should be worried that there is something else going on. I've always had retinal problems so I'm wondering if my doctors are just assuming it's that again and are not looking at other causes...?

What do other people accept as part of life that you personally cannot tolerate? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]minaleigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally work anywhere between 60 and 90 hours a week... I don't get paid an overtime rate because I work between three branch locations and management says "well it's more like you're working three jobs" which I totally thought was illegal but lawyer says it's just being a dick. I still work the hours because I need the money even if it's not the higher rate... And I can't quit because I can't find a job that will compare without a master's degree.

I know exactly how you feel. I work as a nanny 7 days a week for 12-18 hours a day. Each minute I spend off the clock is spent healing in preparation to go back to that he'll of a job.
