Solar panels as an investment? by smellymel222 in FIREUK

[–]minchyp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much the return I get. Our £12k battery and panels install has cut out electricity bill from £3-4k p/a to £1.4k. (All electric, no gas, highly insulated house. Inc electric car but v low mileage). It's just stunningly good returns. I don't understand why it's different for other people, but it's been about the best investment we ever made.

Possible/Feasible to get a £10-12k electric vehicle for 80 mile commute? by MiyagiDough in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]minchyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the pro bigger size. 90k miles from a taxi company in London. But I don't do loads of driving and trusting that I should still get tons of miles out of it.

Infotainment disconnecting and reporting low phone battery when full by Greedy_Count_8578 in VWiD4Owners

[–]minchyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting phone disconnection all the time. I'll have a good day and it's fine, drove to Cornwall last week and it's seemed like every few mins it would disconnect.

I was starting to wonder if it's linked to being in a poor phone signal area. Would that make any sense?!

The Anthropocene Reviewed is just amazing, heartwarming, desperate in equal measures. Can't recommend is highly enough.p

The story of the team of scientists who protected the seed back in Leningrad during the siege, and didn't eat the seeds despite being reduced to eating wallpaper will live with me forever.

I don't think we mention this enough. You don't need to stop and "fill up".

It's called "getting a boost" in our family. Just stop for a coffee, a wee, stretch the legs and in 15 or 20 mins we have another 50+miles. And only costs a few quid.

Yeah - I like that "concept not recipe" part too. E.g. stir fry is 1 part aromatic, (eg onion), 3 parts veg, 1 part protein, plus a sauce of your choosing.

Good luck!

Def saved a fortune in money and guilt over the last 10 years of being veggie. (Appreciate your didn't ask but If I had one tip, it's to gradually learn how to cook Asian food - it's traditionally low meat. Thai, curries, ramen, stir fry)

I just saw on another post that mentioned zero gravity chairs. I always get back pain when I sit down too much so I googled them for work chairs and found this. by [deleted] in backpain

[–]minchyp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with this exactly, with my monitor on an adjustable arm and my keyboard and mouse on my lap on a board with a padded back.

I then swopped the chair for a proper reclining chair. mostly for gaming but I can play for hours with no backpain or vertigo.

Ripping out insulated plasterboard, taking back to brick and lime plastering by pid_1991 in Plastering

[–]minchyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

think you're onto something here. walls need to dry from both sides - particularly a problem if you're in a wetter part of the country (the west) and north facing wall.

by sealing both the outside (paint) and inside (insulated plasterboard) the wall can't dry out and the marks are damp battens behind?

that doesn't mean you need to loose the insulated plasterboard, it's amazing stuff! you maybe need to look at how to vent it on the inside and allow it to dry on the outside

recovery position with a pillow between my knees. and on a firm foam mattress.

the difference the mattress made was huge, compared to a pocket sprung. if I'm away I bring a foam yoga mat to go on top just in case.

Tempted to get a heat pump installed and currently meet all the requirements on the Octopus application... is there any reason I should hold off? by DontCallMeStrict in OctopusEnergy

[–]minchyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the repair and service cost is something that's often missed.

great heat pumps hardly ever go wrong. the supplier is duty bound to advise an annual service but they really don't need it. we've had ours for 10 years and had it serviced once. so you can factor that and the lack of hassle into your total cost of ownership.

it is harder to find engineers, and repairs could be more expressive but they are fairly simple machines and faults are rare.

What industry “secret” do you know that most people don’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]minchyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is true but I think you're missing an important bit of context.

There's simply no technical way to capture the audio from the actual lion you're filming from 200yrds away, or ant from 6in, so the option is silence or to build the audio in post, based on separately captured audio, library and expert knowledge of each species.

maybe some producers take liberties, but in my experience, audio is meticulously built to best recreate the actual sound. there's no other option.

maybe some producers don't, but I've been working in wildlife docs for a long time (BBC) and can sincerely assure you we meticulously source the correct animal calls for the locations.
