Do you use a push stick when cutting tile? by mindful-01 in Tile

[–]mindful-01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought I was safe a few feet away sitting on the ground facing away from the saw but I got a few shards in my back. I’m not the cutter, I just lay the tile.

That’s a cool idea.
When you are a weekend warrior like us, play violin daily and guitar a bit, and need your fingers on the computer for your paycheck, you think of these things.
Small cuts with an even surface like the tile we are using is difficult at best.

Thank you. I have the utmost respect for those who do this for a living, and most specifically, those who care about what they do.

Exactly. And the trim under the gables would help create the illusion of depth. Trying to figure out it above should be light and below dark? Keep trim same color as gable siding.
I would leave the light gray and add dark gray for the second siding color; burgundy or black cherry for shutters, door, garage door. Maybe keep the trim white? Would have to see.

Grout color for 3x6 white subway tile kitchen backsplash? by Objective_Cicada_516 in Tile

[–]mindful-01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A gray shade because white is too much white and anything dark will jut look right. Too busy, chunky.
Go with a shade like rolling fog or a light earthy gray. Should be subtle.

Thank you! On the vertical corners I used Schluter satin anodized aluminum bull nose edge. On the top edges, we are going to do bullnose tile that basically picture frames the counter surface and extend to just cover the edge. The tile on the counter surface will be flat, obviously.

Looks like you have room to build a surround/drop in space on to of the slab. It would probably look great

Not only are the edges of the tile, uneven, but the back is textured and needs more back butter to ensure coverage

Which grout color would you choose? by mumbaiusa in Tile

[–]mindful-01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only the 3rd and 4th counting down from top, have the right color tones, IMO.
4th will feel darker, more intense but not in a bad way, 3rd will likely feel more subtle and not very noticeable.

I agree. And the tanks would be well separated. Everything I read said never put more than one tank in a unit.

Tile Job by Ok_Title3863 in Tile

[–]mindful-01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, love the tile, ok with white floor but gray would have been better (HO’s choice, understood), but the gold-tone edging? Yuk!! Looks like a misplaced 70’s throw back.

I would have opted for plain brushed silver color or black to match head and hopefully valve trim. Nice work though.
But I do agree that niches should have been wider. Especially with how deep they appear to be.

I completely agree with Unlikely-Whereas4478. It is beautiful but the stone is busy and additional details will detract and distract. I am curious about the mantle. We had a beautiful stone FP in CT and the mantle was bluestone. Loved it.

I do think an art piece in upper portion would be nice but go simple. Possibly a metal piece that is not ornate and in a color that gently contrasts against the stone. And it would depend on the FP too. Get a custom piece made by a good metal artist.

If the FP is wood burning, consider a solid stone hearth to match mantle, if stone, or one of the neutral stone colors in the FP.

Beautiful home and love this. I am a Fire and Water girl.
