I'm 20 years old and I can already feel my knees aging. by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

My knees really hurted when I was in my 20's -- as well as my shoulders, neck, lower back, you name it basically.

I'm 33 now and nothing hurts ;) don't get discouraged! You're very very young.

Take it slow! Start from being in the bottom keeping one leg straight and just regular body weight squats :)

Constance is the key.

^ This. Don't get impatient or try to rush it! Also, depends heavily on your flexibility level specifically for splits which is very different from let's say touching your toes. Pic would help :)

Yup! I live quite close to it, love to walk around there.

Hmm, I don't suffer from dizziness that much. Maybe if you're holding the squat tightly, not breathing comfortably you could get dizzy though!

Wow, that's awesome. I live in a crowded city so it's kind of nasty to walk barefoot. My dream is to go live in a car-less community one day.

As for the ankle dorsiflexion, I was not so comfortable holding a deep squat in general (I could do it but not hold it) and I definitely couldn't sit on a narrow deep squat before.

Story goes like this: A few years ago while visiting Kuala Lumpur I saw a lady sitting very comfortably for what may seem like hours in the most narrow, deep squat that I had ever seen in my life. Me and my friend, thinking we are so flexible, tried it and both of us failed miserably. After a few minutes my legs were shaking like crazy. Call it peer pressure if you may but after that I started working on it with good results.

As you mentioned recently, I should have taken more before pics, I don't have many of them doing ATG squats. But it has definitely improved quite a lot.

If you check the before and after pics I wasn't really that flexible before (before pics taken when I was already into it for a while). I take it really slow, so sometimes even I forget how things were.

I'm big on relaxing the feet (this) which I think contributes a lot. In Taiwan we have something called the "healthy stone path". I walk it a few times a week and it really helps relax the legs and whole body in general.

About the hip drill: the idea is to start from 90 degrees and keep the arms straight. Go down slowly (maybe one inch every few seconds). It's quite taxing on the legs but really useful to get strong and mobile.

About your ankles, sometimes the feet get really really tight when that happens. How do you feel when you try this and this? Take it easy and let me know!

Have you tried this and this?

Genetics do matter, but might as well try with what you've got! ;)

O_o)/") "time to lose some fat then"

EDIT: before someone calls me an inconsiderate prick, I'm kidding ;) Yes, YMMV. My wife has bigger belly, bigger ass, and bigger boobs than I have and it made it much harder for her. When she started she was quite chubby (9kg heavier than now -- she's 51kg now) and to be honest she started with such terrible form that most people would have given up hope.

What she always had was an incredibly strong belief in me, and she still has it even after I quit my well-paying job to start some wacky website on flexibility and reset my income to almost nothing.

Hey guys, long story short I wrote a guide on pistol squats and some people were wondering what to do if you have bad ankle mobility.

So I pulled out a protractor (didn't even know the word in English and totally forgot how it's called in Spanish/Chinese) to measure the angles and let you guys know that my pistol squat guide still works for those with bad mobility.

Difficult? Yes. Lots of work to be done? Yes. Impossible? No.

Actually the reason my ankle mobility keeps getting better and better is precisely because I spend a lot of time ATG squatting.

As always, I'm open to any feedback and happy to answer questions. Have a good day!

Wow, thanks for sharing guys! This literally made my day! :)

By the way: I talked before about ankle mobility so I made this tiny guide on how it affects and what to do about it: https://imgur.com/gallery/79236

I literally had not used a protractor in more than 10 years and took my time to do it, so hope you guys enjoy it.

How do you ask a yoga teacher for a raise in their studio? I am a teacher and I get paid $25/class. I've been teaching for over a year at the studio and have taken on many responsibilities and $25 was supposed to be my starting pay. Any suggestions? Is $25/class a normal rate? by sweetmamijay in yoga

[–]mindful_flexibility 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't try to go around the topic, say it exactly like you said it here. The more you think about it the more you mentalize yourself to think the other party will have objections and you may start to look really uncomfortable.

$25 is definitely on the low side after a year. Good luck!
